The development of radio in the online environment has changed the relationship the medium has with the audience. Social networks offer listeners-users new ways of participating in the cons¬truction of discourse on off radio (on air broadcasting) as well as online. The paper analyzes how broadcasters manage this new proactive role of the audience in broadcast antenna as well as in their profiles on Facebook and Twitter and how listeners-users become generators of content across networks. The methodology is based on a content analysis of the calls for participation made by the broadcaster and the detected audience participation. The results show that the dominant discourse of the 2.0 radio is still the on air broadcasting and controlled by the broadcaster. The audience continues to maintain its traditional role, interacting when the broadcaster requests it and following the guidelines imposed by the radioprogramme. Even when the interaction takes place in the social networks context, the audience activity is also in line with the hegemonic discourse. The audience shows low level of activity as radio prosumer and very occasionally they present content unrelated to current affairs or the media agenda. Listeners-users are more interested in their ability to amplify radio content among their "friends" and "followers" than to generate and spread their own content under-using the potential that Web 2.0 gives them to be active and to participate

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The technological features of mobile devices can be linked to the innovative design of some gadgets and also, the offer of new services to media consumers. Nowadays, freed from the constraints imposed by the limited radio spectrum, the radio landscape can multiply its content coming through the net, both live and on demand. Similarly the fact that it can identify a device owner, combined with all the data available through other digital platforms, has enhanced the content customisation for each user. In addition, the location data available from all devices, allows the delivery of contextualized information. Furthermore, biometric sensors are able to report on emotional state of the user. Finally, the ability to record and send audio messages to mobile phones has become an excellent tool to engage with the audience. In this paper we approach the presence of Spanish radio stations across mobile devices, and targeted applications. We will also analyse how the industry is working with the specific characteristics of mobile devices (network access, user recognition, geolocation, biometric sensors and voice recording) and how the new trends are affecting the supply as well as the content distribution

Medical students maintain their humanistic and patient‑centred vocation throughout Medicine Degree in Spain: a study based on narratives

Narrative medicine has great educational potential in the degree of medicine. This study explores for the frst time the use of narrative medicine in relation to longitudinal evolution of medical vocation for the same group of students. In the context of the Degree in Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), students wrote narratives about what it meant to them to be a doctor at the beginning and end of their studies. The narratives of 338 students of the academic years 2012/13– 2017/18 and 2013/14–2018/19 were analysed and compared. Students mostly pursued a degree in medicine on account of humanistic motivations, which are reinforced throughout their degree. In contrast, up to 10% of students reference to have experienced vocational crises and sufered frustration, with up to 25% of the references pertaining to having made signifcant sacrifces. Students maintain and evolve their humanistic, patient-centred vision throughout their degree studies, despite the difculties they appear to encounter. We suggest that eforts must be made to include more humanistic perspectives in the medical degree to keep this trend, which may improve both the educational experience created in universities and the health care given to patient

A Journey through the History of Drug Quality Control, from Greece to Costa Rica

    Get PDF
This review describes the evolution and development of drug quality control throughout different times in history. A bibliographic research was conducted from the database JSTOR from the University of Costa Rica. This database contains information from academic journals and books from XIX to date. It covers different fields, such as anthropology, arts, biology, botany, health sciences, politics, pharmacy, history. Information was retrieved when the following words were present: pharmacy, quality, quality control, drugs, medicines, pharmacopoeia. In ancient history India, China, Greece, Egypt, Africa and America used different medicinal plants to cure or alleviate disease. In some of these regions, methods were developed to make medicinal preparations as safe and effective as possible. In ancient Greece, the need to have a complete knowledge of drugs to carry out their proper preparation and detect adulterations was emerging. In Europe there was a constant development in the field, from books containing simple lists of preparations and medicines to more complex pharmacopoeias that included quality of the medicines. In America, the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) first appeared in 1820. In Costa Rica, the Specialized Laboratory for Drug Analysis, actually the Laboratory for Analysis and Pharmaceutical Consulting (LAYAFA), was created in 1965, to ensure the quality and safety of medicines registered and marketed in Costa Rica. Differences between regulations and quality standards across centuries and countries, and their impact on the commercialization of medicines, have promoted regulations to harmonize the requirements related to different activities of the processes of manufacture, registration and quality control of medicines.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias de la Salud::Instituto de Investigaciones Farmacéuticas (INIFAR)UCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Salud::Facultad de Farmaci

Cider Proteins and Foam Characteristics: A Contribution to Their Characterization

    Get PDF
A capillary sieving electrophoretic method for protein analysis and molecular weight determination was used to characterize ciders from Asturias, northern Spain. The total protein content (Bradford method) and the foam parameters (Bikerman method) were also analyzed to complete this characterization. The polypeptide profile, based on the molecular weight, together with exploratory and classification techniques, that is, principal component analysis (PCA) or linear discriminant analysis (LDA), allowed ciders to be differentiated on the basis of their foam assessment and the apple juice extraction technology used in the cidermaking process. In addition, the application of correlation analysis, that is, canonical correlations (CCA) or partial least-squares (PLS), revealed that the proteins with higher molecular weight were more relevant with respect to cider foamability. PLS analysis also provided a mathematical equation that is able to predict the stabilization time of foam from the polypeptide profile of the cider, because this is the foam parameter most influenced by these compounds
