    Get PDF

In this paper we will try to show, through comparative and descriptive analysis, the evolution of the Canary education system (taking as data from the 1990s to the present) with the aim of offering an overview of education in the Canary Islands and its contribution to social change. This analysis will be make in relation to the national average and the data of Castilla León and the Basque Country. For that, the indicators that have been used (collected by Ministry of Education) are the number of students (by sex and nationality), enrolment rate, eligibility rate, dropout rate, graduation rate, public expenditure on education and the number of teachers. We defend the hypothesis that in general the indicators have improved in the Canaries, although the differences with respect to other more developed territories (Catalonia, Basque Country) and the Spanish average have grown. The results obtained confirm this hypothesis, but obviously with nuances about it

Equidad, Género Y Diversidad En Educación

Education has a significant role to play in the lives of everyone. Schools are still one of the ways of achieving valuable goals in education, both socially and individually. Education has an impact on our health, political participation, equal opportunities, environment, economy, culture, citizenship, human rights, and on the equitable distribution of social benefits (Pérez-Jorge, Márquez-Domínguez, Gómez-Galdona, De la Rosa-Hormiga & Marrero-Morales, 2016). Education offers people the opportunity to make decision regarding their own lives; to use their abilities; to take care of themselves as well as other people; to maintain our high expectations and interests; and to make social and political participation possible. In that sense, education is a way to make us free and in living a fulfilled life. In this essay on “Equity, Gender and Diversity in Education”, it will be exposed (starting from the initial idea on the importance of education) that nowadays, schools (education), despite all the technological advancement and educational reforms, has little to do with an ideal model of diversity and gender directed towards equal opportunities in education (Criado, 2004). In this study, we will try to analyze the treatment that is being carried out by public policies about gender equality and diversity. Also, we will make significant contributions, if possible, to the debate and reflect on the achievement of quality and inclusive education. This contribution is one that is able to respond to the educational need for diversity in education

Emerging Practices in Facebook at National Parks

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to analyze recent data about the behavior of national park administrations on Facebook. As public organizations, they endeavor to proactively communicate information to citizens, promoting transparency and accountability. It is important to study the case of national parks because of their relevant role in preserving natural and cultural heritage and promoting a very rich scenario of policy-making and responsible local and global citizenship. Some insights have arisen for political management of these institutions. According to the analysis of the results, it is shown that there exists a significant presence of these entities in Facebook, even if this type of communication is perhaps in its infancy. The results suggest that a potential factor (country in which each park is located and the corresponding administration style) exists, in order to explain significant differences between parks.JEL Codes - D8; R5; Z1; Z

Purpose – This work aims to explore the behavior of stock market prices according to the autoregressive fractional differencing integrated moving average model. This behavior will be compared with a measure of online presence, search engine results as measured by Google Trends. Design/methodology/approach – The study sample is comprised by the companies listed at the STOXX® Global 3000 Travel and Leisure.Google Finance and Yahoo Finance, along with Google Trends, were used, respectively, to obtain the data of stock prices and search results, for a period offive years (October 2012 to October 2017). To guarantee certain comparability between the two data sets, weekly observations were collected, with a total figure of 118 firms, two time series each (price and search results), around 61,000 observations. Findings – Relationships between the two data sets are explored, with theoretical implications for the field sof economics, finance and management. Tourist corporations were analyzed owing to their growing economic impact. The estimations are initially consistent with long memory; so, they suggest that both stock marketprices and online search trends deserve further exploration for modeling and forecasting. Significant differences owing to country and sector effects are also shown. Originality/value – This research contributes in two different ways: it demonstrate the potential of a new tool for the analysis of relevant time series to monitor the behavior of firms and markets, and it suggests several theoretical pathways for further research in the specific topics of asymmetry of information and corporate transparency, proposing pertinent bridges between the two fields.

This paper shows the different factors that can impact on the youth protest`s organization within a framework of generational change in rural contexts, taking as reference the case of the Gomera Island, based on the Doctoral Thesis of Josué Gutiérrez. In this way, we analyze the demographic, social, political and economic factors that can affect the appearance (or absence) of social protest and collective action in rural settings, taking into account the Gomera youth people´s values universe. In order to achieve this research objective, we used both the documentary analysis and knowledge acquired by the development of the profession of sociologist on Gomera Island

Background: In the light of the growing presence of a fourth generation in families, that of the great-grandparents, this study examines the interaction between individuals of this generation and their great-grandchildren taking into account their prior role as grandparents and certain sociodemographic characteristics. Methods: Descriptive study with 46 participants with great-grandchildren, who completed an interview that involved answering questions about sociodemographic variables and some of the most frequent intergenerational activities. The Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U nonparametric tests were used to analyze the data. Results: The data showed that 80.5% of the great-grandparents engage in interaction with their great-grandchildren in all the activities studied; further, these activities coincide with those previously shared with their grandchildren, albeit at a much lower rate. Age, the presence of health problems, and the number of great-grandchildren are related to a reduction in the frequency of certain shared activities between great-grandparents and great-grandchildren.Conclusions: The results of this initial study of the great-grandparenthood role can help show how this generation’s socializing role can be complementary to the other extended family roles of grandparenthood and parenthood. Our improved understanding of this role can help us better plan for optimizing interventions over the four generations.

Instagram: Balancing Information Asymmetry of the Tourism Industry

    Get PDF
This study focuses on the use of Instagram by tourism companies. Specifically, it aims to analyze how Instagram empowers individuals over corporations in the digital dialogue, thus balancing the information asymmetry between corporations and stakeholders. Four categories of metrics have been collected to analyze the use of Instagram by companies: presence, impact, conversation, and influence. Additionally, OLS regressions have been performed to identify potential explanatory factors to explain the different behavior of each firm and its corresponding communities. While the use of Instagram by the selected firms is still scarce, significant results are as follows: corporations are using Instagram as an additional channel in their current communication; some explanatory factors account for significant differences in countries, size, and industries; and users are somehow reactive to the stream of pictures and texts disclosed by firms. The presence and impact of companies on Instagram are a highly important source for driving stakeholders’ conversation within the digital arena

The panorama of kindergartens Canary, as a whole today, is uncertain due to lack of subsidies and as a result of the global crisis that took place in our country years ago. In addition, large cuts have been made and are still continuously used to make public administrations which affect sensitive way to education. Furthermore, we have analyzed the reality of municipal kindergartens of the Canary Islands. This analysis was done based on what we have considered to be a minimum quality criteria for the effective functioning of these services. Also, we have tried to catch a glimpse of the reality of these schools so as to offer the keys to a model of educational management. This however guarantees both the quality of service and the user’s satisfaction
