    Convergence of Sectoral Productivity in Turkish Provinces: A Markov Chains Model

    this study examines the role that sectors play in aggregate convergence of provincial labor productivity across the 67 provinces of turkey during the 1975-1990 period. a markov chain model is applied to characterize the long-run tendencies of productivity both at the aggregate and sectoral levels. in order to determine the likely sources of aggregate fluctuations, sectoral time-invariant distributions are compared with the aggregate distribution, and those sectors that exhibit similar distribution patterns as that of the aggregate distribution are characterized as dominant sectors. evidence strongly suggests that the aggregate time-invariant distribution is determined mainly by the agricultural, industrial and transportation sectors. specifically, the pattern of polarization of productivity levels in these three sectors is very similar to the pattern prevailing at the aggregate level. the results suggest that, in the long run, two convergence clubs are likely to emerge - one for the agricultural and another for the highly industrialized provinces. an exception is the service sector, which exhibits global convergence.convergence; aggregate and sectoral labor productivity; markov chains

    Co doping induced structural and optical properties of sol-gel prepared ZnO thin films

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.The preparation conditions for Co doping process into the ZnO structure were studied by the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique. Structural and optical properties of the Co:ZnO thin films as a function of Co concentrations were examined. It was observed that hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO is dominant up to the critical value, and after the value, the cubic structural phase of the cobalt oxide appears in the X-ray diffraction patterns. Every band-edge of Co:ZnO films shifts to the lower energies and all are confirmed with the PL measurements. Co substitution in ZnO lattice has been proved by the optical transmittance measurement which is observed as the loss of transmission appearing in specific region due to Co2+ characteristic transitions. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.     Demosaicing images from colour cameras for digital image correlation

    Digital Image Correlation is not the intended use for consumer colour cameras, but with care they can be successfully employed in such a role. The main obstacle is the sparsely sampled colour data caused by the use of a colour filter array (CFA) to separate the colour channels. It is shown that the method used to convert consumer camera raw files into a monochrome image suitable for digital image correlation (DIC) can have a significant effect on the DIC output. A number of widely available software packages and two in-house methods are evaluated in terms of their performance when used with DIC. Using an in-plane rotating disc to produce a highly constrained displacement field, it was found that the bicubic spline based in-house demosaicing method outperformed the other methods in terms of accuracy and aliasing suppression

    Molecular-dynamics simulations of stacking-fault-induced dislocation annihilation in pre-strained ultrathin single-crystalline copper films

    We report results of large-scale molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of dynamic deformation under biaxial tensile strain of pre-strained single-crystalline nanometer-scale-thick face-centered cubic (fcc) copper films. Our results show that stacking faults, which are abundantly present in fcc metals, may play a significant role in the dissociation, cross-slip, and eventual annihilation of dislocations in small-volume structures of fcc metals. The underlying mechanisms are mediated by interactions within and between extended dislocations that lead to annihilation of Shockley partial dislocations or formation of perfect dislocations. Our findings demonstrate dislocation starvation in small-volume structures with ultra-thin film geometry, governed by a mechanism other than dislocation escape to free surfaces, and underline the significant role of geometry in determining the mechanical response of metallic small-volume structures.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figure

    Using ahp and topsis to evaluate welding processes for manufacturing plain carbon stainless steel storage tank

    Purpose: In the plain carbon stainless steel storage tank manufacturing industry, there are many types of welding processes used. When selecting the most appropriate welding process is usually done intuitively by the manufacturer depending on its own pre-experiences or common applications in similar companies. However, this approach has a shortsighted view since it generally ignores many conflicting criteria effecting the suitable welding process selection. To overcome this problem, this study aims to evaluate important criteria and alternative welding processes by using some of multi-criteria decision-making approaches to come up with better manufacturing decisions. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a combined methodology of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Since both of these techniques require experts’ contributions, a group meeting is held with the experts from academia and industry. Findings: The study identified the important criteria for welding selection process in storage tank manufacturing. With the help of experts in the domain, both weights of decision criteria and ranking of alternative welding processes were determined. Research limitations/implications: Since the techniques used in the study depend on expert’s contribution, the expert knowledge on the welding process is critical. When the expert changes the resulting decision may also change. Therefore, the selection of the expert(s) must be done carefully. Practical implications: The findings of the study are valid for the specific case of the storage tank manufacturing. The study helps manufacturers to understand the framework of welding process selection and make them aware of various techniques (e.g., AHP and TOPSIS). The approach may also be welcomed by other welding applications. Originality/value: The main contribution of the study is mostly on the practical side. To the authors’ best knowledge, this paper is one of few studies investigating the selection of welding process for a plain carbon stainless steel storage tank manufacturing. It may help to increase the attention of researchers on multi-criteria decision-making applications in the welding field. © International OCSCO World Press. All rights reserved. 201

    Electromigration-Induced Propagation of Nonlinear Surface Waves

    Due to the effects of surface electromigration, waves can propagate over the free surface of a current-carrying metallic or semiconducting film of thickness h_0. In this paper, waves of finite amplitude, and slow modulations of these waves, are studied. Periodic wave trains of finite amplitude are found, as well as their dispersion relation. If the film material is isotropic, a wave train with wavelength lambda is unstable if lambda/h_0 < 3.9027..., and is otherwise marginally stable. The equation of motion for slow modulations of a finite amplitude, periodic wave train is shown to be the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. As a result, envelope solitons can travel over the film's surface.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Proinflammatory Cytokines and Leptin Are Increased in Serum of Prepubertal Obese Children

    It has not yet been shown in prepubertal children how cytokines, leptin, and body mass, as well as parameters of obesity are interrelated. The aim of this study was to explore the relation between circulating levels of some cytokines with leptin and body mass index. A case control study was carried out in obese children of both sexes. An obese group was carried out with 63 school prepubertal children and a control group comprised the same number of nonobese children paired by age and by sex. Mean serum leptin concentration was significantly higher in the obese children at 19.9 ± 7.4 ng/mL, than the control group (7.9 ± 5.1 ng/mL). Serum IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were also significantly higher in the obese group than controls (33.0 ± 8.9, 45.2 ± 11.8, and 9.2 ± 2.3 pg/mL, versus 3.6 ± 1.0, 13.1 ± 3.9, and 3.9 ± 1.0 pg/mL, resp). In controversy, serum IL-2 level was diminished in the obese group as 0.4 ± 0.1 versus 0.9 ± 0.1 U/L. Obesity may be a low-grade systemic inflammatory disease. Obese prepubertal children have elevated serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α which are known as markers of inflammation
