Spin Density wave instability in a ferromagnet
Ferromagnetic (FM) and incommensurate spin-density wave (ISDW) states are an
unusual set of competing magnetic orders that are seldom observed in the same
material without application of a polarizing magnetic field. We report, for the
first time, the discovery of an ISDW state that is derived from a FM ground
state through a Fermi surface (FS) instability in FeGa. This was
achieved by combining neutron scattering experiments with first principles
simulations. Neutron diffraction demonstrates that FeGa is in an ISDW
state at intermediate temperatures and that there is a conspicuous re-emergence
of ferromagnetism above 360 K. First principles calculations show that the ISDW
ordering wavevector is in excellent agreement with a prominent nesting
condition in the spin-majority FS demonstrating the discovery of a novel
instability for FM metals; ISDW formation due to Fermi surface nesting in a
spin-polarized Fermi surface.Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures. Supplemental Materials Include
Comparisons of heat treatment on the electrochemical performance of different carbons for lithium-oxygen cells
Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) cells are a promising power source, and carbons are an attractive non-metal catalyst for air electrodes. To improve the electrochemical performance, various carbons are heated in an inert atmosphere. It is found that heat treatment at 900 C can differently improve the electrochemical performance of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), acetylene carbon black (AB) and activated carbon (AC), but the improvement of CNTs is the most obvious. After heat treatment, the peak current density of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the 1st discharge capacity of CNTs increase ∼30% and ∼125%, respectively, while the charge transfer reaction resistance and the Warburg diffusion resistance decrease ∼7.0% and ∼11.1%, respectively. AC has the highest charge capacities and capacity retention ratio in spite of little influence by heat treatment. The possible mechanism and reasons are analyzed using different techniques. Microstructure is superior to conductivity for enhancing the rechargeability and the cyclability, and heat treatment is effective for some carbon materials in improving the electrochemical performance of Li-O2 cells. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd
Biochar application significantly affects the N pool and microbial community structure in purple and paddy soils
Background The increasing demand for food production has resulted in the use of large quantities of chemical fertilizers. This has created major environmental problems, such as increased ammonia volatilization, N2O emission, and nitrogen (N) leaching from agricultural soil. In particular, the utilization rate of N fertilizer is low in subtropical southern parts of China due to high rainfall. This causes not only large financial losses in agriculture, but also serious environmental pollution. Methods In this study, 16S rDNA-based analysis and static-chamber gas chromatography were used to elucidate the effects of continuous straw biochar application on the N pool and bacteria environment in two typical soil types, purple and paddy soils, in southern China. Results Straw biochar application (1) improved the soil N pool in both rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils; (2) significantly reduced the emission of N2O, with no difference in emission between 1 and 2 years of application; (3) increased the abundance of N-processing bacteria in the soil and altered the bacterial community structure; and (4) improved the tobacco yield and N use efficiency in paddy soil. These findings suggest that, in southern China, the application of straw biochar can promote N transformation in purple and paddy soils and reduce the emission of the greenhouse gas N2O
Research Progress in High-Efficiency Utilization of Nitrogen in Rapeseed
Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important mineral elements for plant growth and development and a key factor for improving crop yield. Rapeseed, Brassica napus, is the largest oil crop in China, producing more than 50% of the domestic vegetable oil. However, high N fertilizer input with low utilization efficiency not only increases the production cost but also causes serious environmental pollution. Therefore, the breeding of rapeseed with high N efficiency is of great strategic significance to ensure the security of grain and oil and the sustainable development of the rapeseed industry. In order to provide reference for genetic improvement of rapeseed N-efficient utilization, in this article, we mainly reviewed the recent research progress of rapeseed N efficiency, including rapeseed N efficiency evaluation, N-efficient germplasm screening, and N-efficient physiological and molecular genetic mechanisms
Safety Profile of TiO2-Based Photocatalytic Nanofabrics for Indoor Formaldehyde Degradation
Anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (TNPs) are synthesized using the sol-gel method and loaded onto the surface of polyester-cotton (65/35) fabrics. The nanofabrics degrade formaldehyde at an efficiency of 77% in eight hours with visible light irradiation or 97% with UV light. The loaded TNPs display very little release from nanofabrics (~0.0%) during a standard fastness to rubbing test. Assuming TNPs may fall off nanofabrics during their life cycles, we also examine the possible toxicity of TNPs to human cells. We found that up to a concentration of 220 μg/mL, they do not affect viability of human acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 macrophages and human liver and kidney cells
