Effects of maceration on the amino acid content of Chardonnay musts and wines

    Get PDF
Chardonnay musts were macerated for 0, 6, 12, and 18 h and wines analyzed immediately after fermentation and at 6 months of bottle ageing. Maceration implies an increase of the amino acid content in the must immediately after fermentation and in the final wine. Wines from macerated musts have significantly higher levels of gamma-amino butiric acid, serine, glycine, histidine and alanine than wines from non-macerated musts. The content of these amino acids could help to examine whether there has been a maceration process or not. Must macerated for 6 h is characterized by higher contents of almost all amino acids. The only exceptions were glycine and glutamine. It is concluded that the optimum maceration time for Chardonnay must is 6 h when a maximum amino acid content is reached. After 6 months the amino acid concentrations in bottled wines were higher than in wines shortly after fermentation. Obviously the final equilibrium of amino acids had not been reached and during bottle ageing amino acids continued to be set free into the medium from yeast cells or their autolysis. During this time wines tend to reach a similar amino acid concentration independent of the maceration time of their respective musts

Marine ecosystem services in Xàbia, north of Alicante (Spain): an economic valuation via multicriteria analysis

    Get PDF
This paper provides an estimation of the economic value of the Ecosystem Services (ESs) in the marine coastal strip of Xàbia, north of Alicante, Spain. The proposed method combines an Analytic Network Process (ANP) and a Discounted Cash Flow model. We confirmed the presence of seven ESs in this natural area (including seafood, climate regulation, waste treatment, biological control, lifecycle maintenance, gene pool protection, recreation, cultural heritage, and knowledge development) based on the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity classification. Our results reveal substantial economic value attached to non-marketed services provided by the underwater environment

Midwifery Learning and Forecasting: Predicting Content Demand with User-Generated Logs

Every day, 800 women and 6,700 newborns die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. A well-trained midwife can prevent most of these maternal and newborn deaths. Data science models together with logs generated by users of online learning applications for midwives can help to improve their learning competencies. The goal is to use these rich behavioral data to push digital learning towards personalized content and to provide an adaptive learning journey. In this work, we evaluate various forecasting methods to determine the interest of future users on the different kind of contents available in the app, broken down by profession and region

Customer Lifetime Value in Video Games Using Deep Learning and Parametric Models

Nowadays, video game developers record every virtual action performed by their players. As each player can remain in the game for years, this results in an exceptionally rich dataset that can be used to understand and predict player behavior. In particular, this information may serve to identify the most valuable players and foresee the amount of money they will spend in in-app purchases during their lifetime. This is crucial in free-to-play games, where up to 50% of the revenue is generated by just around 2% of the players, the so-called whales. To address this challenge, we explore how deep neural networks can be used to predict customer lifetime value in video games, and compare their performance to parametric models such as Pareto/NBD. Our results suggest that convolutional neural network structures are the most efficient in predicting the economic value of individual players. They not only perform better in terms of accuracy, but also scale to big data and significantly reduce computational time, as they can work directly with raw sequential data and thus do not require any feature engineering process. This becomes important when datasets are very large, as is often the case with video game logs. Moreover, convolutional neural networks are particularly well suited to identify potential whales. Such an early identification is of paramount importance for business purposes, as it would allow developers to implement in-game actions aimed at retaining big spenders and maximizing their lifetime, which would ultimately translate into increased revenue

OWA operators in the calculation of the average green-house gases emissions

    Get PDF
This study proposes, through weighted averages and ordered weighted averaging operators, a new aggregation system for the investigation of average gases emissions. We present the ordered weighted averaging operators gases emissions, the induced ordered weighted averaging operators gases emissions, the weighted ordered weighted averaging operators gases emissions and the induced probabilistic weighted ordered weighted averaging operators gases emissions. These operators represent a new way of analyzing the average gases emissions of different variables like countries or regions. The work presents further generalizations by using generalized and quasi-arithmetic means. The article also presents an illustrative example with respect to the calculations of the average gases emissions in the European region

AbstractThe internationalization of R&D activities in countries different from that of the multinational's origin is a difficult decision. The local environment plays an essential role in that sense. Using case study methodology and taking seven subsidiaries with excellent research centers in Spain as a reference, the results show that the aspects related to technology supply have more power of attraction than those related to market demand. However, the Spanish environment is more attractive on the side of demand factors than by the supply ones; therefore, it explains the position of Spain as an intermediate country in attracting direct foreign investment in R&D and innovation
