The resonant frequency of sound, that is to say, the vibratory quality of sound, is felt and registered by our bodies in a way that goes beyond the audible. In an urban environment, the combination of sounds creates a sonic topography that manifests itself in the environmental qualities of a place. Sound is an integral constituent of atmospheric construction. How we think and feel sound is contingent on the architectural and lived conditions of space. In turn, the configuration of space is linked to capitalist-nationalist practices of urban development. This paper takes a materialist approach to urban sound in two areas of Mexico City's central district (Centro Histórico). The first is the corridor made up by San Jerónimo and Regina Streets and the second is the area known as La Merced. Through a combination of sound recordings, soundwalks and interviews with local residents, this paper aims to gain insights the construction of the built environment and its relation to quotidian interactions with situated sound atmospheres in the context of urban regeneration. Additionally, this paper seeks to bring to the forefront aural research methods as a way of approaching the nuances of urban life at the intersection of political economy, geography, and ecology

With the advent of the 21st century, the 25-year-old promise of multi-parametric modeling has re-emerged reincarnated as Building Information Modeling (BIM). Promoted by a trend toward Integrated Practices (IP), BIM can provide instrumentation for the design, representation, documentation of the projects, and the exchange of information among designers and other stakeholders. A growing number of disciplines in the design and construction industry are embracing the use of BIM and consequently the academia is addressing related training needs. This paper presents the accumulative experience of the authors over the last decade at Texas A&M University regarding digital media integration and our current plans for addressing future demands and opportunities. As a matter of introduction, the paper makes reference to early implementations of multi-parametric modeling in electronic design studios, early use of the Internet for the implementation of collaborative virtual design studios, and their evolution towards virtual multidisciplinary studios and fabrication studios that make use of BIM software. At the core, the paper explains how BIM can be a pedagogical tool for multidisciplinary integration and curricular articulation. The paper makes evident that BIM is more than a phenomena happening in the profession and something the academia must simply provide training for. The paper ends by drawing conclusions that outline how we can produce the design briefings of projects especially directed toward offering multidisciplinary learning opportunities in studios instrumented by means of BIM software. ABSTRACT The rapid evolution experimented in the last years by the Internet technologies has stimulated the proliferation of heterogeneous software resources in most scientific disciplines, especially in the bioinformatics area. In most cases, current trends aim to publish those resources as services freely available over the Internet, using technologies and design patterns defined for the implementation of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). Simultaneous combination of various services into the same workflow opens the opportunity of creating more complex and useful applications. Integration of services raises great challenges, both from a theoretical to a practical point of view such as, for instance, the location and access to the available resources or the orchestration among them. This PhD thesis deals with the problem of identification, location, classification and access to informatics resources available over the Internet. On this regard, a general model has been defined for building indexes of software resources, with information extracted automatically from scientific articles from the literature specialized in the area. Such model consists of six phases ranging from the selection of data sources to the access to the indexes created, covering the identification, extraction, classification and curation of the information related to the software resources. To verify the viability, feasibility and efficiency of the proposed model, it has been evaluated in two different scientific domains—Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics—producing two resources indexes named BioInformatics Resources Inventory (BIRI) and electronic-Medical Informatics Repository of Resources (e-MIR2) respectively. The results and evaluation of those systems are presented along this PhD thesis, and they have produced different scientific publications in several JCR journals and international conferences. The potential impact and utility of this PhD thesis could be of great relevance considering that, thanks to the generality of the proposed model, it could be successfully extended to any scientific discipline. Some of the most relevant future research lines derived from this work are outlined at the end of this book

Contribution to the PV-to-inverter sizing ratio determination using a custom flexible experimental setup

This work presents a novel approach to the experimental validation of the optimal PV-to-inverter sizing ratio value for the energy yield maximization of a GCPVS by means the implementation of a custom workbench using a solar array simulator which has allowed to replicate a wide variety of technical configurations and environmental data. The compliance between the experimental setup and the mathematical model developed to simulate the optimal PV-to-inverter sizing ratio value was demonstrated by the specific tests carried out on its two main subsystems (the PV generator and the inverter), thus the subsequent simulations were made on a firm basis. Likewise, the evaluation of the overall system also showed a good agreement between the experimental and the simulated energy yield and optimal PV-to-inverter sizing ratio results, rendering relative errors below 3% for both magnitudes. Prognostic and Predictive Value of PBRM1 in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma

    Get PDF
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most frequent kidney solid tumor, the clear cell RCC (ccRCC) being the major histological subtype. The probability of recurrence and the clinical behavior of ccRCC will greatly depend on the different clinical and histopathological features, already incorporated to different scoring systems, and on the genomic landscape of the tumor. In this sense, ccRCC has for a long time been known to be associated to the biallelic inactivation of Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene which causes aberrant hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) accumulation. Recently, next generation-sequencing technologies have provided the bases for an in-depth molecular characterization of ccRCC, identifying additional recurrently mutated genes, such as PBRM1 (≈40-50%), SETD2 (≈12%), or BAP1 (≈10%). PBRM1, the second most common mutated gene in ccRCC after VHL, is a component of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex. Different studies have investigated the biological consequences and the potential role of PBRM1 alterations in RCC prognosis and as a drug response modulator, although some results are contradictory. In the present article, we review the current evidence on PBRM1 as potential prognostic and predictive marker in both localized and metastatic RCC.S

The ENSO signature in sea-surface temperature in the Gulf of California

We analyzed 21 years of sea-surface temperature satellite images to explore the spatial signature of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation signal in the Gulf of California. We used empirical orthogonal function analysis to extract the principal mode of the nonseasonal sea-surface temperature variability and compared it to the spatial signature of the Southern Oscillation Index. The first mode accounted for 80% of nonseasonal variability and its amplitude time series was significantly correlated to the Southern Oscillation Index (r = −0.58,P \u3c 0.01). The amplitude of this mode and its statistical relation to the El Niño is stronger during winter, which suggests that forcing of sea-surface temperature variability occurs through the disruption of the wind-driven upwelling corridor along the eastern coast due to El Niño-related atmospheric teleconnections. We also examined weekly time series of coastal sea-surface temperature coastal anomalies along the coast of North America, including the interior of the Gulf of California, during the strong 1997–98 El Niño. We found a poleward propagating signal that reached the mouth of the Gulf of California at the end of spring and continued its poleward propagation along the west coast of the peninsula slightly delayed; it also resulted in warming inside the Gulf of California. This observation may provide an explanation for the variable extension of the El Niño signature along the Pacific coast of North America

This paper presents a simulation approach which can help in the preliminary power sizing design of a gridconnected PV system based on a single inverter configuration. Given a nominal peak power of the PV array, this simulation procedure leads to the PV inverter maximum rated power which maximizes the yearly injected energy to the grid.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
