Sobre los mejores resultados académicos de las alumnas : ¿resiliciencia?

En los últimos años, los informes educativos tanto nacionales como internacionales, advierten del aumento progresivo de las estudiantes universitarias. De hecho la Universidad se encuentra actualmente feminizada a nivel de alumnado, en la gran mayoría de titulaciones, salvo en las Escuelas Técnicas. Desde la perspectiva histórica, esta realidad supone un gran acontecimiento y un enorme logro para las mujeres ya que, desde su acceso formal al sistema educativo, han debido sortear no pocas dificultades provenientes tanto de barreras institucionales, como de las limitaciones que les imponen los roles y los estereotipos de género tradicionales. Realidad la actual que además supera las mejores expectativas puesto que, la mayoría que conforman las chicas, no es sólo cuantitativa sino también cualitativa. Ello parece indicar la presencia de comportamientos resilientes entre las estudiantes, que estarían relacionados con el afrontamiento exitoso de las adversidades de tal manera que, no sólo no resultan negativamente afectadas por éstas, sino que además salen fortalecidas y preparadas para enfrentarse a nuevas dificultades.National and international educational reports in recent years, have been warning a progressive increase of women in college. Universities today are widely feminized in most degree programs, except in technical specialties. A historical approach to women´s education tell us that this situation is a significant achievement, especially because from their official access to education women have had to overcome serious difficulties. These difficulties which come from both institutional barriers and the limitations of gender roles and stereotypes, seem to have been overcome by women not only in a quantitative way but also in a qualitative because they have a higher academic performance than their male peers, those for which the education system was created. These results could be interpreted in terms of resilience, a psychological construct that describes those individuals or groups who successfully faced environmental adversity, leaving them empowered and ready to face new challenges

Amanda Labarca, pionera de la educación y la política de las mujeres en chile

Calificada por sus propios compatriotas como una de las mujeres con más talento que ha producido su país, presentamos un pequeño compendio de la vida y la obra de Amanda Labarca (1886-1975), efectivamente una de las más destacadas pioneras de la educación y la lucha por los derechos de las poblaciones autóctonas y de las mujeres en Chile. Después de unos breves datos biográficos sobre sus orígenes y su formación universitaria, nos centramos en analizar cuál fue su peculiar visión de la pedagogía de su tiempo y cuáles fueron sus principales aportaciones. Finalmente, concluiremos con una idea central: pese a los años transcurridos, los principios de esta lúcida pedagoga están hoy en día tan vigentes como en el momento de su gestación, siendo de aplicabilidad no sólo para su país sino también para toda Latinoamérica

Entre Europa y América Latina: Mercedes Rodrigo, psicopedagoga pionera

Partiendo de la hipótesis de la amplia influencia que los trabajos de Mercedes Rodrigo Bellido han tenido en la Psicología y la Pedagogía, tanto española como colombiana, nos dispusimos a llevar a cabo el presente trabajo de investigación. Nuestro objetivo general fue visibilizar la figura de esta autora a través de la revisión de su obra, así como de los escritos que sobre ella han dejado otras autoras, como Fania Herrero, quien elaboró su tesis doctoral en torno a esta psicopedagoga semi-oculta en el pasado. Tras la revisión de los textos seleccionados encontramos que la figura de Mercedes Rodrigo Bellido fue especialmente importante para la Psicología colombiana, siendo su mayor contribución la creación del primer programa de formación en Psicología, que pudo extender por toda América Latina. Así mismo, fue artífice de otras muchas importantes contribuciones relacionadas especialmente con la creación de puentes entre la psicopedagogía europea y la española, o con la toma de conciencia de que la Psicología tenía que tener su propio campo de trabajo, ya que sus contenidos venían siendo abordados desde diversas especialidades tales como la Medicina o la Teología. En España, tuvo además un importante papel en los inicios de la Psicología Aplicada. Todas sus estas importantes aportaciones de Mercedes Rodrigo Bellido contrastan con la escasa atención que hasta ahora esta eminente psicopedagoga madrileña ha tenido en nuestro campo de conocimiento

An endogenous HIV envelope-derived peptide without the terminal NH3+ group anchor is physiologically presented by major histocompatibility complex class I molecules

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) recognize viral peptidic antigens presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules on the surface of infected cells. The CTL response is critical in clearance and prevention of HIV infection. Yet, there are no descriptions of physiological peptides derived from the viral envelope protein. In the few reports on endogenous MHC class I viral peptidic ligands from HIV internal proteins, definitive positive identification by mass spectrometry is lacking. The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp160 induces a strong specific CTL response restricted by several human and murine MHC class I molecules, including H-2Dd. Previous analyses showed that this response can be optimally mimicked with the synthetic decameric peptide 318RGPGRAFVTI327. We aim to identify the endogenous natural peptides mediating the response to this epitope. Our data indicate the presence of, at least, two peptidic species of different length and sharing the same antigenic core, which are associated with the Dd presenting molecule in infected cells. One species is at least, probably, the optimal decapeptide. The second species, identified by mass spectrometry for the first time in HIV, is, unexpectedly, a nonamer, which lacks the correctly positioned N-terminal group to bind to Dd. And yet, it is present in similar amounts and, notably, is equally antigenic. Thus, the physiological set of HIV-derived MHC class I ligands is richer and different than expected from studies with synthetic peptides. This may help raise the plasticity and thus the effectiveness of the immune response against the viral infection. After some brief biographical data on her origins and education, the article analyzes her main attributes and contributions particular to early 20th century Chilean views of education. The article concludes that, despite the laps of years, the clear principles of this notable teacher are as much in force nowadays in Chile, as well as Latin America, as they were at the time of their gestation

A long N-terminal-extended nested set of abundant and antigenic major histocompatibility complex class I natural ligands from HIV envelope protein

Viral antigens complexed with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules are recognized by cytotoxic T lymphocytes on infected cells. Assays with synthetic peptides identify optimal MHC class I ligands often used for vaccines. However, when natural peptides are analyzed, more complex mixtures including long peptides bulging in the middle of the binding site or with carboxyl extensions are found, reflecting lack of exposure to carboxypeptidases in the antigen processing pathway. In contrast, precursor peptides are exposed to extensive cytosolic aminopeptidase activity, and fewer than 1% survive, only to be further trimmed in the endoplasmic reticulum. We show here a striking example of a nested set of at least three highly antigenic and similarly abundant natural MHC class I ligands, 15, 10, and 9 amino acids in length, derived from a single human immunodeficiency virus gp160 epitope. Antigen processing, thus, gives rise to a rich pool of possible ligands from which MHC class I molecules can choose. The natural peptide set includes a 15-residue-long peptide with unprecedented 6 N-terminal residues that most likely extend out of the MHC class I binding groove. A comparison of the dental status and treatment needs of older adults with and without chronic mental illness in Sevilla, Spain

Objectives: To study the dental status and treatment needs of institutionalized older adults with chronic mental illness compared to a non-psychiatric control sample. Study Design: The sample size was 100, in which 50 were psychogeriatric patients (study group; SG) classified according to DSM-IV, with a mean age of 69.6 ± 6.7 years, and 50 non-psychiatric patients (control group; CG), with a mean age of 68.3 ± 6.9 years. Clinical oral health examinations were conducted and caries were recorded clinically using the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth Index (DMFT). Results were analyzed statistically using the Student"s t-test or analysis of variance. Results: Caries prevalence was 58% and 62% in SG and CG, respectively. DMFT index was 28.3 ± 6.6 in SG and 21.4 ± 6.07 in CG (p < 0.01). Mean number of decayed teeth was higher in SG (3.1) compared to CG (1.8) (p=0.047). Mean number of missing teeth were 25.2 and 16.4 in SG and CG respectively (p<0.05). DMFT scores were higher in SG in all the age groups (p < 0.01). Mean number of teeth per person needing treatment was 3.4 in SG and 1.9 in CG (p= 0.037). The need for restorative dental care was significantly lower in the SG (0.8 teeth per person) than in the CG (1.7 teeth per person) (p = 0.043). Conclusions: Institutionalized psychiatric patients have significantly worse dental status and more dental treatment needs than non-psychiatric patients

Social employability and gender: reviews of unemployed people on the labour insertion

El objetivo de este trabajo es observar en personas desempleadas de La Rinconada (Sevilla, España) las opiniones en relación a la empleabilidad entre hombres y mujeres. La muestra estuvo formada por 149 personas desempleadas (52 hombres y 97 mujeres) del municipio. Diseñamos y aplicamos un cuestionario compuesto por ítems que se plantean como posicionamientos que adoptan las personas desempleadas en relación a los factores que intervienen en la Empleabilidad Social. En términos generales, la muestra presenta resultados similares en el posicionamiento Redistribucionista (42,96%) e Integracionista (55,70%). Sin embargo, encontramos diferencias en función del sexo; la mayoría de las mujeres mantienen un discurso Redistribucionista y el posicionamiento Integracionista está representado sobre todo por el grupo de hombres. Este dato es especialmente significativo dado que tradicionalmente el desempleo femenino se sitúa por encima del desempleo masculino y se ve más afectado en momentos de crisis económica como la actual.The aim of this work is seeing, in unemployed people in La Rinconada (Sevilla, Spain), their opinion regarding employability (Redistributionist, Under Class and integration) between men and women. The sample consisted of 149 unemployed persons (52 men and 97 women) of the municipality. We designed and applyed a questionnaire composed of items that arise as positions adopted by unemployed persons in relation to the factors involved in the Social Employability questionnaire. Overall, the sample shows similar results in positioning Redistributionist (42.96%) and Integrationist (55.70%). The descriptive analysis of the positioning variable on social employability, shows differences according to sex. Most women maintain a Redistributionist discourse, and an integrationist positioning is represented mainly by the group of men. This finding is especially significant considering that traditionally female unemployment is above the male unemployment, and is most affected by economic crisis like the currently one
