    Continued Use Of Drugs And Working Conditions Among Truck Drivers

    Few studies have been conducted on truck drivers with regard to their health problems, especially their drug consumption profile. This study aimed to determine the continuous use of drugs and to identify use-related professional characteristics among this category. A cross-sectional study was carried out with truck drivers parked at the sorting yard of the, Port of Paranaguá, Paraná. An interview to obtain socioeconomic data, data on health problems, working conditions and continued use of medication was performed. Of the drivers evaluated (n = 665), 21.1% reported a continuous use of some medication, mainly captopril (10.7%), metformin (10.3%), omeprazole (6.2%) and simvastatin (6.2%). Drivers with 16 or more years of professional experience (Prevalence Ratio [PR] 1.67; Confidence Interval [CI] 95% 1.11-2.51), truck owners (PR 1.38; CI 95% 1.03-1.86) and without formal labor contract (PR 1.49; CI 95% 1.11-2.00) had a higher prevalence of continuous use of medication.     Foi proposto recentemente que a solubilidade protéica in vitro com pepsina na concentração de 0,0002% é melhor que em concentrações maiores, para melhor classificar a qualidade protéica de farinhas de origem animal (FOA). Entretanto, nessa concentração, desconhece-se qual é o intervalo que melhor exprime a qualidade por meio da solubilidade protéica das FOA. Este trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de identificar os valores da solubilidade protéica de farinhas de subprodutos do abate de aves (FSA), utilizadas como modelo experimental. As fontes protéicas foram duas FSA e caseína (considerada padrão com 100% de solubilidade protéica). Todas as farinhas foram autoclavadas a 120ºC, durante 0, 10, 20, 40 e 80 minutos. As concentrações utilizadas da pepsina em solução de HCl 0,0744N foram de 0,0002 e 0,02%. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 3 (fontes) x 5 (temperaturas) x 2 (concentrações), com quatro repetições para a enzima na concentração de 0,0002% e duas repetições para a concentração de 0,02%. Foram determinados os valores de solubilidade protéica in vitro em solução ácido/pepsina e energia metabolizável in vivo das FSA. Os resultados indicaram que, na concentração de pepsina de 0,0002%, os valores de boa qualidade das FSA estão acima de 55%. Da mesma forma, solubilidades próximas a 84% podem ser consideradas boas, mas decaem em solubilidade e são consideradas ruins se tiverem em torno de 67% de solubilidade protéica em pepsina a 0,02%.<br>It was recently proposed that the in vitro protein solubility is better to classify animal by-product meals (ABP) using pepsin concentration of .0002% than with higher concentrations. However on this concentration no reference value exists to express ABP quality based on protein solubility. The objective of this study was to obtain protein solubility values for poultry by-product meals (PBP), as model to ABP. Two PBP and casein (considered 100% soluble protein) were used as protein sources. All meals were autoclaved at 120ºC, during 0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 minutes. Concentrations of pepsin on acid HCl 0,0744N were 0.0002 and 0.02%. The experiment was carried out according to a completely randomized design with factorial scheme 3 (sources) x 5 (temperatures) x 2 (concentrations), with four replications for enzyme concentration of 0.0002% and two replications for enzyme at 0.02%. It were determined the in vitro protein solubility values on acid/pepsin solution and the in vivo metabolizable energy of PBP meals. The results indicated that on pepsin concentration of 0.0002%, the values of good quality PBP are over 55%. In the same way, solubility close to 84% could be considered good quality source, but decreasing solubility are considered bad quality with 67% on pepsin at concentration of 0.02%

    To estimate nutrient and energy digestion with animal from in vitro variables it is necessary to control factors that may interfere on digestion such as: source and concentration of digestor substance, as well as the origin and processing of test ingredients. In this study there were performed five laboratory assays, two with poultry and finally regression equations were established based on variables generated with twelve vegetable ingredients. The results showed that there is greater solubility of proteins with NaOH than with KOH. On average, both alkali produced better discrimination of soluble protein with concentration of 0.02% (range of 68.61%) in relation to a concentration of 0.2% (range of 37.97%). Considering interaction between alkali and concentration, the best discrimination on protein solubility was reached with NaOH at 0.02%. The methods of protein or fiber solubilization together with the chemical analysis showed significant results variation among ingredients and when they were used to estimate in vivo variables they produced good estimates. It was concluded that reliable digestion estimates for energy or amino acids from vegetable feed ingredients could be obtained from in vitro variables, when considering solubilities of protein and fiber with chemical analysis.<br>Para estimar a digestão de nutrientes e de energia dos animais a partir de variáveis in vitro, é necessário controlar os fatores que interferem na digestão - origem e concentração da substância digestora - e ter conhecimento da fonte e do processo que envolve o ingrediente em teste. Neste trabalho, foram conduzidos cinco ensaios laboratoriais, dois com animais e, por fim, estabelecidas equações de regressão a partir das variáveis geradas com a utilização de 12 ingredientes vegetais. Os resultados mostraram que há maior solubilidade das proteínas com o NaOH que com o KOH e que, na média de ambos os álcalis, a concentração de 0,02% permite maior discriminação na solubilidade das proteínas (diferença de 68,61%) em relação a 0,2% (37,97%). Considerando a interação entre álcalis e concentrações, a melhor discriminação foi com NaOH a 0,02%. Os métodos de solubilização da proteína ou fibra, juntos com as análises bromatológicas, mostraram variações significativas e, quando usados para relacionar as variáveis in vivo, produziram bons resultados estimadores. Cncluiu-se que podem ser obtidas estimativas confiáveis da digestão animal de ingredientes vegetais com a determinação de variáveis in vitro, desde que considerados fatores relacionados à solubilidade da proteína e fibra e variáveis químico-bromatológicas

    Carcass characteristics and meat quality of heavy swine fed different citrus pulp levels

    An assay with 36 swine initially weighting 83.7±5.1kg body weight (BW) was carried out to evaluate the effects of the use of different dietary citrus pulp levels, 0, 10%, 20%, and 30%, upon digestive organs weights, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of animals subjected to qualitative feed restriction program, and slaughtered at 130kg BW. Linear response (P<0.05) on the weight of stomach, colon, and liver were observed. Negative linear responses (P<0.05) on final BW and carcass yield relative to citrus pulp addition to the diet were observed. Although a negative linear effect (P<0.05) of increasing dietary levels of citrus pulp had been observed on ham weight, yield of this by product was not affected (P>0.05). Higher levels of citrus pulp neither decreased backfat thickness nor increased amount of lean meat, indicative that qualitative feed restriction was not efficient. Positive linear effect (P<0.05) on pH measured 24 hours after slaughter and negative linear effect (P<0.05) on color characteristics as function of citrus pulp dietary levels were verified. Citrus pulp addition in qualitative feed restriction program may not be effective. As no deleterious effects upon meat qualities were observed, citrus pulp can be used as an alternative feedstuff for finishing swine

    Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is increasingly being used worldwide, mostly thanks to technical improvements. This study examined the current status of CSII in Italy. Physicians in charge of 272 diabetes centers caring for patients using CSII were sent a questionnaire investigating clinical features, pump technology and management of these patients; a large proportion (217 centers, 79.8%) joined the study. By end-April 2013, data had been collected on 10152 patients treated with CSII; 98.2% had type 1 diabetes, 82.4% were adults, 57% female. Only just over half the centers (59%) managed more than 20 CSII patients each. The distribution of patients varied widely both among and within different regions. The main indication for CSII was the de- sire to improve glycemic control. Dropouts (8.65%) were mainly due to difficulties with pump wearability or non-optimal glycemic control. Among CSII patients 61% used a traditional pump, 39% a sensor augmented pump. Only 68% used the CSII advanced functions and glucose sensors were used twelve days per month on average. Round-the-clock assistance was guaranteed in 81% of centers; a full diabetes team followed patients in only 40% of adult-care centers and 50% of pediatric units. CSII is increasingly used in Italy, by adults and pediatric patients. However, further work is needed to unify treatment strategies throughout the country and to encourage optimal pump use and applications

    Ultrafast optical spectroscopy of strongly correlated materials and high-temperature superconductors: a non-equilibrium approach

    In the last two decades non-equilibrium spectroscopies have evolved from avant-garde studies to crucial tools for expanding our understanding of the physics of strongly correlated materials. The possibility of obtaining simultaneously spectroscopic and temporal information has led to insights that are complementary to (and in several cases beyond) those attainable by studying the matter at equilibrium. From this perspective, multiple phase transitions and new orders arising from competing interactions are benchmark examples where the interplay among electrons, lattice and spin dynamics can be disentangled because of the different timescales that characterize the recovery of the initial ground state. For example, the nature of the broken-symmetry phases and of the bosonic excitations that mediate the electronic interactions, eventually leading to superconductivity or other exotic states, can be revealed by observing the sub-picosecond dynamics of impulsively excited states. Furthermore, recent experimental and theoretical developments have made it possible to monitor the time-evolution of both the single-particle and collective excitations under extreme conditions, such as those arising from strong and selective photo-stimulation. These developments are opening the way for new, non-equilibrium phenomena that can eventually be induced and manipulated by short laser pulses. Here, we review the most recent achievements in the experimental and theoretical studies of the non-equilibrium electronic, optical, structural and magnetic properties of correlated materials. The focus will be mainly on the prototypical case of correlated oxides that exhibit unconventional superconductivity or other exotic phases. The discussion will also extend to other topical systems, such as iron-based and organic superconductors, (Formula presented.) and charge-transfer insulators. With this review, the dramatically growing demand for novel experimental tools and theoretical methods, models and concepts, will clearly emerge. In particular, the necessity of extending the actual experimental capabilities and the numerical and analytic tools to microscopically treat the non-equilibrium phenomena beyond the simple phenomenological approaches represents one of the most challenging new frontiers in physics
