    Abstract In serious emergencies, as in the case of floods and extreme weather conditions, where a substantial number of people are involved and over vast areas which may also involve different provinces, currently civil protection planning carries on emergency management operations within rigid schemes. A procedure that would be capable of handling events acquiring data continuously and developing real time solutions in a highly flexible manner has not yet been proposed. This research focuses on how the systematization of information systems and communication processes can improve the management of emergencies caused by extreme weather and climate events. The objectives of improved service, levels of safety and sustainability of the intervention in emergencies would be obtained through a centralized decision support system. The system and tools that are presented in this paper aim to respond to emergency issues dynamically responding to the dynamics of the events by taking advantage of an information system capable of sharing data, notifications, service orders, appeals for help, information on the status of the transport network and any other information. The system would provide decision support by acquiring information from smartphones and other nomadic devices; it would so provide exchange of information in real time on one or more virtual platforms among stakeholders and between them and the citizens.     Abstract The future of road transportation is going to be shaped by connectivity and autonomous driving. Connected and autonomous vehicles are expected to increase safety and reduce traffic congestion. Once all the vehicles are connected and geo-localized there might still be a need to integrate a different level of autonomous vehicles on the road: from the human driven vehicle to the fully autonomous vehicle. While surrogate safety measures have been extensively considered to estimate the risk of accidents due to improper driving, there has been no attempt to use them to help drivers achieve a better driving style. This paper presents an experimentation on the idea to warn drivers when they are driving in such a way (owing to their interactions with other vehicles) that could potentially lead to an accident. In the proposed system the driver is warned of the risk of collision by the combined use of localization (GPS) gathered information and the application of road safety indicators such as Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Crash, Time To Collision and others. The experimentation involving car-following vehicles showed the feasibility, with existing technologies, of using surrogate measures of safety to assist the driver in keeping a better driving trajectory. Once connected vehicles are introduced on the market, the presented results can be a base to develop commercial smartphone applications that will allow users of "not connected" old vehicles to also take advantage of real time driving assistance for a safer use of the road

    Co-operative ITS: ESD a smartphone based system for sustainability and transportation safety

    Abstract Co-operative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) are emerging rapidly due to recent development in Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS systems and mobile internet. The main goal of these systems is to improve traffic conditions and safety level on the road networks. With the rapid growth of smartphone technologies and mobile internet, C-ITS based on smartphone may contribute increasingly in vehicle data collection and in traffic safety and sustainability issues. This paper, extending previous research results, explores the possibilities of using smartphone applications coupled with a central server GIS (Geographic Information System) web system to contribute to traffic safety and to reduce fuel consumption. The idea of a co-operative system in which GPS (Global Positioning System) enabled smartphones are capable to acquire individual vehicle's kinematics is extended to take into account both safety and fuel consumption issues. Information in the system is shared on a web server for promoting more sustainable and safe driving styles. The co-operative system allows drivers to examine information about their individual driving style and consumptions allowing a better use of the road. Road operators can use the system to find critical points on the network and to promote traffic safety

    High Resolution Attenuation Images From Active Seismic Data: The Case Study of Solfatara Volcano (Southern Italy)

    <p>The anelastic attenuation of rocks strongly depends on the contained fluid physical state and saturation. Furthermore, it is more sensitive than elastic parameters to changes in the physical state of materials. In a geologically complex  volcanic context, where fluids play a very important role, anelastic imaging of the subsoil is therefore a very powerful tool for a better understanding of its dynamics.</p><p>In this study we present a robust workflow aimed at retrieve accurate 1-D and 3-D anelastic models from the processing of active seismic data, in terms of lateral and depth variations of P-wave quality factors Q<sub>P</sub>. This methodology has been applied to data collected during a high resolution active seismic experiment in a very small-scale volcanic volume, the Solfatara crater, within Campi Flegri caldera, Southern Italy. The presented methodology is developed in three distinct steps: 1) the active seismic data have been properly processed and analyzed for measuring the t* attenuation parameter for all possible source-receivers couples. First, the source contribution has been removed by cross-correlating the recorded signal with the sweep function of the Vibroseis, which was the adopted active seismic source. Then, the spectral decay method has been applied in order to compute the t* values. 2) A reference 1-D attenuation model has been retrieved by means of a grid search procedure aiming at finding the 1-D Qp structure that minimizes the residual between the average observed t* and the theoretical t* distributions. The obtained starting reference model allowed to build a preliminary map of t* residuals through which the retrieved t* dataset has been validated. 3) The 15,296 t* measurements have been inverted by means of a linearized, perturbative approach, in a 160 x 160 x 45 m<sup>3 </sup>tomographic grid.</p><p>The retrieved 3-D attenuation model describes the first 30 m depths of Solfatara volcano as composed of very high attenuating materials, with Qp values ranging between 5 and 40. The very low Qp values, correlated with low Vp values retrieved by a previous tomographic work carried out in the area, indicate the low consolidation degree of very superficial volcanic materials of Solfatara volcano. Finally, in the NE part of the crater, lower attenuating bodies have been imaged: it is a further hint for characterizing this area of the volcano as the shallow release of the CO<sub>2 </sub>plume through the main fumaroles of the crater.</p&gt

    Expression of high- and low-affinity epidermal growth factor receptors in human hepatoma cell lines

    AbstractData are presented from a comparative research on expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors and response to EGF of six independently established cell lines derived from human hepatoma. These lines differ in terms of the degree of differentiation, presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA copies in integrated form and expression of HBV genes. Our results indicate differential expression of membrane EGF receptors and differential response to EGF under serum- and hormone-free culture conditions. Furthermore, a significant difference in affinity could be detected between EGF receptors of the two highly dedifferentiated cell lines (HA22T/VGH and Li7A) whose replication is inhibited by EGF concentrations capable of stimulating more differentiated phenotypes

    Monitoring the Microseismicity through a Dense Seismic Array and a Similarity Search Detection Technique: Application to the Seismic Monitoring of Collalto Gas-Storage, North Italy

    Seismic monitoring in areas where induced earthquakes could occur is a challenging topic for seismologists due to the generally very low signal to noise ratio. Therefore, the seismological community is devoting several efforts to the development of high-quality networks around the areas where fluid injection and storage and geothermal activities take place, also following the national induced seismicity monitoring guidelines. The use of advanced data mining strategies, such as template matching filters, auto-similarity search, and deep-learning approaches, has recently further fostered such monitoring, enhancing the seismic catalogs and lowering the magnitude of completeness of these areas. In this framework, we carried out an experiment where a small-aperture seismic array was installed within the dense seismic network used for monitoring the gas reservoir of Collalto, in North Italy. The continuous velocimetric data, acquired for 25 days, were analysed through the application of the optimized auto-similarity search technique FAST. The array was conceived as a cost-effective network, aimed at integrating, right above the gas storage site, the permanent high-resolution Collalto Seismic Network. The analysis allowed to detect micro-events down to magnitude Ml = −0.4 within a distance of ~15 km from the array. Our results confirmed that the system based on the array installation and the FAST data analysis might contribute to lowering the magnitude of completeness around the site of about 0.7 units

    Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase from the Cold Adapted Microorganism Psychromonas ingrahamii: A Low Temperature Active Enzyme with Broad Substrate Specificity

    Serine hydroxymethyltransferase from the psychrophilic microorganism Psychromonas ingrahamii was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified as a His-tag fusion protein. The enzyme was characterized with respect to its spectroscopic, catalytic, and thermodynamic properties. The properties of the psychrophilic enzyme have been contrasted with the characteristics of the homologous counterpart from E. coli, which has been structurally and functionally characterized in depth and with which it shares 75% sequence identity. Spectroscopic measures confirmed that the psychrophilic enzyme displays structural properties almost identical to those of the mesophilic counterpart. At variance, the P. ingrahamii enzyme showed decreased thermostability and high specific activity at low temperature, both of which are typical features of cold adapted enzymes. Furthermore, it was a more efficient biocatalyst compared to E. coli serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) particularly for side reactions. Many β-hydroxy-α-amino acids are SHMT substrates and represent important compounds in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and food additives. Thanks to these attractive properties, this enzyme could have a significant potential for biotechnological applications

    Results from the European Union MAPEC_LIFE cohort study on air pollution and chromosomal damage in children: are public health policies sufficiently protective?

    Background: Children are at high risk of suffering health consequences of air pollution and childhood exposure can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood. This study, part of the MAPEC_LIFE project (LIFE12 ENV/IT/000614), aimed to investigate the associations between exposure to urban air pollutants and micronucleus (MN) frequency, as a biomarker of chromosomal damage, in buccal cells of children for supporting implementation and updating of environmental policy and legislation. Methods: This prospective epidemiological cohort study was carried out on 6- to 8-year-old children living in five Italian towns with different levels and features of air pollution. Exfoliated buccal cells of the children were sampled twice, in winter and spring, obtaining 2139 biological samples for genotoxicological investigation. Micronucleus (MN) frequency was investigated in buccal cells of children and its association with air pollution exposure was assessed applying multiple Poisson regression mixed models, including socio-demographic and lifestyle factors as confounders. We also dichotomize air pollutants\u2019 concentration according to the EU Ambient Air Quality Directives and WHO Air Quality Guidelines in all Poisson regression models to assess their risk predictive capacity. Results: Positive and statistically significant associations were found between MN frequency and PM10, PM2.5, benzene, SO2 and ozone. The increment of the risk of having MN in buccal cells for each \u3bcg/m3 increase of pollutant concentration was maximum for benzene (18.9%, 95% CIs 2.2\u201338.4%) and modest for the other pollutants (between 0.2 and 1.4%). An increased risk (between 17.9% and 59.8%) was found also for exposure to PM10, benzene and benzo(a)pyrene levels higher than the threshold limits. Conclusions: Some air pollutants are able to induce chromosomal damage in buccal cells of children even at concentrations below present EU/WHO limits. This type of biological effects may be indicative of the environmental pressure which populations are exposed to in urban areas

    Lifestyles and socio-cultural factors among children aged 6-8 years from five Italian towns: The MAPEC-LIFE study cohort

    Background: Lifestyles profoundly determine the quality of an individual’s health and life since his childhood. Many diseases in adulthood are avoidable if health-risk behaviors are identified and improved at an early stage of life. The aim of the present research was to characterize a cohort of children aged 6–8 years selected in order to perform an epidemiological molecular study (the MAPEC_LIFE study), investigate lifestyles of the children that could have effect on their health status, and assess possible association between lifestyles and socio-cultural factors. Methods: A questionnaire composed of 148 questions was administered in two different seasons to parents of children attending 18 primary schools in five Italian cities (Torino, Brescia, Pisa, Perugia and Lecce) to obtain information regarding the criteria for exclusion from the study, demographic, anthropometric and health information on the children, as well as some aspects on their lifestyles and parental characteristics. The results were analyzed in order to assess the frequency of specific conditions among the different seasons and cities and the association between lifestyles and socio-economic factors. Results: The final cohort was composed of 1,164 children (50.9 boys, 95.4% born in Italy). Frequency of some factors appeared different in terms of the survey season (physical activity in the open air, the ways of cooking certain foods) and among the various cities (parents’ level of education and rate of employment, sport, traffic near the home, type of heating, exposure to passive smoking, ways of cooking certain foods). Exposure to passive smoking and cooking fumes, obesity, residence in areas with heavy traffic, frequency of outdoor play and consumption of barbecued and fried foods were higher among children living in families with low educational and/or occupational level while children doing sports and consuming toasted bread were more frequent in families with high socio-economic level. Conclusions: The socio-economic level seems to affect the lifestyles of children enrolled in the study including those that could cause health effects. Many factors are linked to the geographical area and may depend on environmental, cultural and social aspects of the city of residence
