    Get PDF
Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (SP4) is a new device in the line of hybrid computers today. It aims to work as both as table and laptop computer. There are multiple versions of SP4 that include devices equipped with i3, i5 and i7 core processors. This makes SP4 a great addition for hospital, clinics or schools for its portability and features. As these locations can be prone to cyber-attacks, we plan to test this computer’s reliability and performance under cybersecurity attacks. The device tested is built with Intel Core i7-6650U 2.21 GHz processor with automatic overclocking capabilities up to 3.4 GHz, 16 GB Random Access Memory (RAM), 256GB hard drive and Windows 10 Professional operating system 64-bit version, plus one USB 3.0. The USB 3.0 port was used as Ethernet port with Gigabit adaptor from Freegene. In this paper, we measure and present various computing parameters to understand the effects of cybersecurity attacks on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 computer

On the functionality of the N-terminal domain in xylanase 10A from Ruminococcus albus 8

We analyzed the structure to function relationships in Ruminococcus albus 8 xylanase 10A (RalXyn10A) finding that the N-terminus 34-amino acids sequence (N34) in the protein is particularly functional. We performed the recombinant wild type enzyme’s characterization and that of the truncated mutant lacking the N34 extreme (RalΔN34Xyn10A). The truncated enzyme exhibited about half of the activity and reduced affinity for binding to insoluble saccharides. These suggest a (CBM)-like function for the N34 motif. Besides, RalXyn10A activity was diminished by redox agent dithiothreitol, a characteristic absent in RalΔN34Xyn10A. The N34 sequence exhibited a significant similarity with protein components of the ABC transporter of the bacterial membrane, and this motif is present in other proteins of R. albus 8. Data suggest that N34 would confer RalXyn10A the capacity to interact with polysaccharides and components of the cell membrane, enhancing the degradation of the substrate and uptake of the products by the bacterium.Fil: Storani, Alem. FS-DETR: Few-Shot DEtection TRansformer with prompting and without re-training

This paper is on Few-Shot Object Detection (FSOD), where given a few templates (examples) depicting a novel class (not seen during training), the goal is to detect all of its occurrences within a set of images. From a practical perspective, an FSOD system must fulfil the following desiderata: (a) it must be used as is, without requiring any fine-tuning at test time, (b) it must be able to process an arbitrary number of novel objects concurrently while supporting an arbitrary number of examples from each class and (c) it must achieve accuracy comparable to a closed system. While there are (relatively) few systems that support (a), to our knowledge, there is no system supporting (b) and (c). In this work, we make the following contributions: We introduce, for the first time, a simple, yet powerful, few-shot detection transformer (FS-DETR) that can address both desiderata (a) and (b). Our system builds upon the DETR framework, extending it based on two key ideas: (1) feed the provided visual templates of the novel classes as visual prompts during test time, and (2) ``stamp'' these prompts with pseudo-class embeddings, which are then predicted at the output of the decoder. Importantly, we show that our system is not only more flexible than existing methods, but also, making a step towards satisfying desideratum (c), it is more accurate, matching and outperforming the current state-of-the-art on the most well-established benchmarks (PASCAL VOC & MSCOCO) for FSOD. A Differential Redox Regulation or the Pathways Metabolizing Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate Tunes the Production of Reducing Power in the Cytosol of Plant Cells

Adaptation to aerobic life leads organisms to sense reactive oxygen species and use the signal for coordination of the entire metabolism. Glycolysis in plants is a particular network where specific steps, like oxidation of glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate (Ga3P), are critical in order for it to function. The triose-phosphate can be converted into 3-phosphoglycerate through the phosphorylating Ga3P dehydrogenase (Ga3PDHase, EC 1.2.1.12) producing ATP and NADH, or via the non-phosphorylating enzyme (np-Ga3PDHase; EC 1.2.1.9) generating NADPH. In this work we found redox regulation to be a posttranslational mechanism allowing the fine-tuning of the triose-phosphate fate. Both enzymes were inactivated after oxidation by reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Kinetic studies determined that Ga3PDHase is marked (63-fold) more sensitive to oxidants than np-Ga3PDHase. Thioredoxin-h reverted the oxidation of both enzymes (although with differences between them), suggesting a physiological redox regulation. The results support a metabolic scenario where the cytosolic triose-phosphate dehydrogenases are regulated under changeable redox conditions. This would allow coordinate production of NADPH or ATP through glycolysis, with oxidative signals triggering reducing power synthesis in the cytosol. The NADPH increment would favor antioxidant responses to cope with the oxidative situation, while the thioredoxin system would positively feedback NADPH production by maintaining np-Ga3PDHase at its reduced active state.Fil: Piattoni, Claudia Vanesa. MicroLife: from prediction to function

    Get PDF
Bacteria have a wide variety of lifestyles ranging from pathogenic, causing diseases in animals, plants or humans, to beneficial. Some of these beneficial bacteria have evolved together with plants and provide specific traits such as plant growth promotion or help to tolerate (a)biotic stresses. Burkholderia spp. and Pseudomonas spp. are among the most ubiquitous bacterial genera whose species, 60 and 220 respectively, have been isolated worldwide in all kinds of environments. For example, species belonging to B. cepacia and B. pseudomallei complexes, and P. aeruginosa are often human pathogens, while B. plantarii, B. glumae and B. gladioli, and P. syringae strains are strictly plant pathogens. On the other hand, Paraburkholderia and P. fluorescens strains are mainly found in soil and/or in beneficial associations with plants. In this study, we have used MicroLife, a high-throughput computational workflow to explore large-scale genomic datasets and perform a deep comparative genomic analysis between all the Burkholderia and Pseudomonas genomes publicly available. The comparative genomic analysis has identified more than 709 and 385 genes that were associated with plant pathogenic lifestyle in Burkholderia and Pseudomonas, respectively. We observed a larger set of genes that are well-known for their roles in the virulence of these bacteria. However, many of the identified genes were of unknown function or unrelated to known virulence processes. Here, we are using targeted mutagenesis to validate the unknown genes predicted by MicroLife. Currently, we are testing the phenotype in plants of 34 independent mutants. In addition, heterologous expression and biochemical analyses are ongoing to determine the roles of these predicted genomic signatures with the lifestyle associated.Universidad de Málaga. Tuning domain wall velocity with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We have studied a series of Pt/Co/M epitaxial trilayers, in which Co is sandwiched between Pt and a non magnetic layer M (Pt, Ir, Cu, Al). Using polar magneto-optical Kerr microscopy, we show that the field- induced domain wall speeds are strongly dependent on the nature of the top layer, they increase going from M=Pt to lighter top metallic overlayers, and can reach several 100 m/s for Pt/Co/Al. The DW dynamics is consistent with the presence of chiral N\'eel walls stabilized by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) whose strength increases going from Pt to Al top layers. This is explained by the presence of DMI with opposite sign at the Pt/Co and Co/M interfaces, the latter increasing in strength going towards heavier atoms, possibly due to the increasing spin-orbit interaction. This work shows that in non-centrosymmetric trilayers the domain wall dynamics can be finely tuned by engineering the DMI strength, in view of efficient devices for logic and spitronics applications.Comment: 5 pages, 4 Figure
