    The Anti-Feminicide Movement in Ciudad Juarez: Women’s Activism and Its New Articulations of Justice

    The issue of feminicide in Ciudad Juarez was first exacerbated by the notable shift engendered by the implementation of a neoliberal economic system in the early 1990s, which motivated by profit ultimately allowed for the exploitation of young women within this region and as a result normalized views of their inferiority and disposability. In response to the frequent occurrence of legal impunity within cases of feminicide, local activist groups and international NGOs have collectively participated in past public demonstrations, transnational initiatives, and ‘artivism’ campaigns in hopes of providing a foundation for actualized social justice. Although significant attention drawn from the global public has persuaded the Mexican government to en- act a few changes in the past, these however, have proved to be rhetorical commitments towards improving gender justice. Therefore, an examination of the anti-feminicide activism generated from the community of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico since the 1990s should provide an in-depth analysis of the various forms and outlets utilized for public activism within this region. This will only provide further knowledge into the public events and prior activism that possibly influenced the State’s decision to enact its criminalization. By analyzing the aftermath of activist campaigns in the post-criminalization era, this will offer considerable insight into their current adaptations for the meaning of justice and will intentionally focus on the environment of contemporary activism as it systematically confronts the pervasive and failed legal system, which becomes visibly apparent within the case of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

    Post Traumatic Stress and Externalizing Behaviors in At Risk Urban Adolescents: A Prospective Study

    Adolescents in in urban areas are at a higher risk for experiencing direct victimization as well as witnessing violence directed towards others, which increases the amount of post-traumatic stress (PTS) they face (Joseph, S., Mynard, H., & Mayall, M. 2000). Experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been associated with a number of negative externalizing behaviors, such as increased delinquency, drug use and aggressive behavior in adolescents (Dierkhising, C. B., Ko, S. J., Woods-Jaeger, B., Briggs, E. C., Lee, R., & Pynoos, R. S. 2013). This association is especially relevant, as adolescence is a stage where youth are beginning to experiment and form life-long habits to manage life stressors. However, previous research has been limited regarding gender differences in PTS as males and females often have different ways of coping with traumatic events (Stevens, Murphy, & McKnight, 2003). This study closes this gap by investigating the connection between PTS and externalizing behaviors in the form of delinquency, drug use, and aggression in a sample of urban, predominantly African American adolescents. Data for this study comes from the first two waves of Project COPE, a four-year longitudinal study on violence exposure, stress responses and adjustment who were recruited from low SES neighborhoods in Richmond, Virginia. The sample included 166 males (46.4%) and 192 females (53.6%), all of whom were in grades five or eight and between the ages of nine and sixteen (M=12.13, SD=1.62) at wave 1 of the study. The participants consisted primarily of African Americans (91%). During annual in home interviews, participants provided assessments of PTS using the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC) scale, and delinquency, aggressive behavior and drug use were assessed using the Problem Behavior Frequency Scales (PBFS). Linear regression analyses were conducted with and without gender as moderator. Results from this sample found no significant relationship between PTS and Delinquency (Beta=.074, p\u3e.05) or Drug use (Beta=.035, p\u3e.05) one year later. However, a significant relationship was found between PTS and aggressive behavior at year two (Beta=.185, p\u3c.05). Interactions with gender revealed that the patterns of association between PTS and aggressive behavior were similar for males and females. Contrary to previous research, our results show no increased risk of drug use or rule-breaking behavior in this sample of adolescents from high violence neighborhoods, for either males or females. It is possible that the effects were short-term in this case rather than lasting. However, the significant relationship of PTS with increased physical aggression for all youth sheds light on possible long-term consequences of PTS and underscores a need to address this specific risk in low SES, urban samples with high prevalence of PTS.     A Flora Dicroidium no Rio Grande do Sul: implicaçÔes bioestratigråficas

    A Triassic taphoflora identified in the Central Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, represents an important biostratigraphic stage in the paleofloristic succession of the Paraná Basin. This megafloristic association is composed of compressed leaves, fronds and seeds of a “Dicroidium Flora” and shows a predominance of the Dicroidium genus, with several species, and other important taxa like Neocalamites sp, Cladophlebis sp, Tetraptilon aff, heteromerum, Ginkgoites Antarctica, Sphenobaiera sp, Podozamites sp, Nilssonia sp, Pteruchus sp and Carpolithus sp. Taking into account the stratigraphical distribution of different species of the Dicroidium genus, a biostratigraphic framework was established. The biostratigraphical position of this Triassic flora was established by comparison with Triassic floras from Argentina, South Africa and Australasia. Considering that the recognition of this Dicroidium Flora was based on limited outcrops belonging to one lithostratiphic level (Santa Maria Formation – Passo das Tropas Facies), it was impossible to establish a formal biostratigraphic zonation. Instead, at present time, an informal floristic interval, named “Dicroidium odontopteroides Flora” is proposed (Late Anisian to Late Ladinian, Middle Triassic)

    In vitro and in vivo antifungal profile of a novel and long acting inhaled azole, PC945, on Aspergillus fumigatus infection

    The profile of PC945, a novel triazole antifungal, designed for administration via inhalation, hasbeen assessed in a range of in vitro and in vivo studies. PC945 was characterized as a potent, tight-binding inhibitor of Aspergillus fumigatus sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51A and CYP51B)activity.In addition, when A. fumigatus hyphae or human bronchial cells were treated with PC945, and thenwashed, PC945 was found to be quickly absorbed into both target and non-target cells and toproduce persistent antifungal effects. In temporarily neutropenic immunocompromised miceinfected with A. fumigatus intranasally, 50% of the animals survived until day 7 when treatedintranasally with PC945 at 0.56 Όg/mouse, while posaconazole showed similar effects (44%) at14 Όg/mouse. This profile affirms that topical treatment with PC945 should provide potentantifungal activity in the lung

    Expanding the diversity of mycobacteriophages: insights into genome architecture and evolution.

    Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect mycobacterial hosts such as Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. All mycobacteriophages characterized to date are dsDNA tailed phages, and have either siphoviral or myoviral morphotypes. However, their genetic diversity is considerable, and although sixty-two genomes have been sequenced and comparatively analyzed, these likely represent only a small portion of the diversity of the mycobacteriophage population at large. Here we report the isolation, sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of 18 new mycobacteriophages isolated from geographically distinct locations within the United States. Although no clear correlation between location and genome type can be discerned, these genomes expand our knowledge of mycobacteriophage diversity and enhance our understanding of the roles of mobile elements in viral evolution. Expansion of the number of mycobacteriophages grouped within Cluster A provides insights into the basis of immune specificity in these temperate phages, and we also describe a novel example of apparent immunity theft. The isolation and genomic analysis of bacteriophages by freshman college students provides an example of an authentic research experience for novice scientists

    The TESS-Keck Survey. XI. Mass Measurements for Four Transiting sub-Neptunes orbiting K dwarf TOI-1246

    Multi-planet systems are valuable arenas for investigating exoplanet architectures and comparing planetary siblings. TOI-1246 is one such system, with a moderately bright K dwarf (V=11.6, K=9.9) and four transiting sub-Neptunes identified by TESS with orbital periods of 4.31 d, 5.90 d, 18.66 d, and 37.92 d. We collected 130 radial velocity observations with Keck/HIRES and TNG/HARPS-N to measure planet masses. We refit the 14 sectors of TESS photometry to refine planet radii (2.97±0.06 R⊕,2.47±0.08 R⊕,3.46±0.09 R⊕, 3.72±0.16 R⊕), and confirm the four planets. We find that TOI-1246 e is substantially more massive than the three inner planets (8.1±1.1M⊕, 8.8±1.2M⊕, 5.3±1.7M⊕, 14.8±2.3M⊕). The two outer planets, TOI-1246 d and TOI-1246 e, lie near to the 2:1 resonance (Pe/Pd=2.03) and exhibit transit timing variations. TOI-1246 is one of the brightest four-planet systems, making it amenable for continued observations. It is one of only six systems with measured masses and radii for all four transiting planets. The planet densities range from 0.70±0.24 to 3.21±0.44g/cm3, implying a range of bulk and atmospheric compositions. We also report a fifth planet candidate found in the RV data with a minimum mass of 25.6 ± 3.6 M⊕. This planet candidate is exterior to TOI-1246 e with a candidate period of 93.8 d, and we discuss the implications if it is confirmed to be planetary in nature

    Another Shipment of Six Short-Period Giant Planets from TESS

    We present the discovery and characterization of six short-period, transiting giant planets from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) -- TOI-1811 (TIC 376524552), TOI-2025 (TIC 394050135), TOI-2145 (TIC 88992642), TOI-2152 (TIC 395393265), TOI-2154 (TIC 428787891), & TOI-2497 (TIC 97568467). All six planets orbit bright host stars (8.9 <G< 11.8, 7.7 <K< 10.1). Using a combination of time-series photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations from the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP) Working Group, we have determined that the planets are Jovian-sized (RP_{P} = 1.00-1.45 RJ_{J}), have masses ranging from 0.92 to 5.35 MJ_{J}, and orbit F, G, and K stars (4753 << Teff_{eff} << 7360 K). We detect a significant orbital eccentricity for the three longest-period systems in our sample: TOI-2025 b (P = 8.872 days, ee = 0.220±0.0530.220\pm0.053), TOI-2145 b (P = 10.261 days, ee = 0.182−0.049+0.0390.182^{+0.039}_{-0.049}), and TOI-2497 b (P = 10.656 days, ee = 0.196−0.053+0.0590.196^{+0.059}_{-0.053}). TOI-2145 b and TOI-2497 b both orbit subgiant host stars (3.8 << log⁥\log g <<4.0), but these planets show no sign of inflation despite very high levels of irradiation. The lack of inflation may be explained by the high mass of the planets; 5.35−0.35+0.325.35^{+0.32}_{-0.35} MJ_{\rm J} (TOI-2145 b) and 5.21±0.525.21\pm0.52 MJ_{\rm J} (TOI-2497 b). These six new discoveries contribute to the larger community effort to use {\it TESS} to create a magnitude-complete, self-consistent sample of giant planets with well-determined parameters for future detailed studies.Comment: 20 Pages, 6 Figures, 8 Tables, Accepted by MNRA

    Identification of the top TESS objects of interest for atmospheric characterization of transiting exoplanets with JWST

While there are over 5000 confirmed planets, more than 4000 Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) planet candidates are still unconfirmed and many of the best planets for atmospheric characterization may remain to be identified. We present a sample of TESS planets and planet candidates that we identify as “best-in-class” for transmission and emission spectroscopy with JWST. These targets are sorted into bins across equilibrium temperature Teq and planetary radius Rp and are ranked by a transmission and an emission spectroscopy metric (TSM and ESM, respectively) within each bin. We perform cuts for expected signal size and stellar brightness to remove suboptimal targets for JWST. Of the 194 targets in the resulting sample, 103 are unconfirmed TESS planet candidates, also known as TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs). We perform vetting and statistical validation analyses on these 103 targets to determine which are likely planets and which are likely false positives, incorporating ground-based follow-up from the TESS Follow-up Observation Program to aid the vetting and validation process. We statistically validate 18 TOIs, marginally validate 31 TOIs to varying levels of confidence, deem 29 TOIs likely false positives, and leave the dispositions for four TOIs as inconclusive. Twenty-one of the 103 TOIs were confirmed independently over the course of our analysis. We intend for this work to serve as a community resource and motivate formal confirmation and mass measurements of each validated planet.
