Doing ethical research together:A communitarian toolkit for ethical research beyond borders

The toolkit for ethical research developed out of a research project that focused on establishing place-based, community-centred best practice in grand challenges-related research ethics, integrity and conduct. We held 5 roundtable events at The University of Edinburgh drawing together more than 200 researchers from 30 countries and more than 60 discipline areas. These conversations highlighted that we needed a clarifying worldview to support place-based, community-centred, ethical action at every stage of the research journey. In response, we created a toolkit - accessible and practical material to guide people involved in complex community-based research. This toolkit explores an ethical worldview for research and provides practical guidance and questions to consider at every stage of the research journey, from developing an ethical research question through to being accountable for the legacy of your research long after the project has concluded

COVID‑19:Physical activity, government restrictions, and mental health in the UK and Italy

COVID-19 restrictions could potentially induce poor mental health. This study considers opposing government restrictions on outdoor physical activity in Italy and the UK to evaluate participants’ ability to conduct physical activity, the relationship between physical activity and mental health, and whether restrictions affect mental health as mediated by physical activity. Participants from the UK and Italy self-reported physical activity before and during restrictions, sociodemographic data, and symptoms of depressions, stress, and anxiety during restrictions. Changes in physical activity were analyzed by tests of differences, and relationships between mental health, physical activity, and the effect of country restrictions were evaluated through path analysis. Two hundred sixty-four participants (UK: 57%; Italy: 43%) responded. The model (χ2(2) = .429, p > .05; RMSEA < .08; CFI > .90) confirmed the country’s effect on physical activity. Participants from Italy significantly decreased physical activity while the least active individuals in the UK increased activity during restrictions. Decreases in physical activity had a significant effect on increased reports of stress and depression. Physical activity did not mediate mental health within the countries. Future policies may consider ways to support individuals in maintaining physical activity habits to minimize the possibility of worsening mental health

Ethics in global research:Creating a toolkit to support integrity and ethical action throughout the research journey

Global challenge-led research seeks to contribute to solution-generation for complex problems. Multicultural, multidisciplinary, and multisectoral teams must be capable of operating in highly demanding contexts. This brings with it a swathe of ethical conflicts that require quick and effective solutions that respect both international conventions and cultural diversity. The objective of this article is to describe the process of creating a toolkit designed to support global researchers in navigating these ethical challenges. The process of creating the toolkit embodied the model of ethical research practice that it advocates. Specifically, at the heart of ethical decision-making is consideration of the following: Place , solutions must be relevant to the context in which they are to be used; People , those impacted by the outcomes must be partners in co-creation; Principles , ethical projects must be guided by clear values; and Precedent , the existing evidence-base should guide the project and, in turn, the project should extend the evidence-base. It is the thesis underlying the toolkit that consideration of these 4Ps provides a strong basis for understanding ethical conflicts and allows for the generation of potential solutions. This toolkit has been designed in two phases of collaborative work. More than 200 researchers participated from more than 30 countries and more than 60 different disciplines. This allowed us to develop a model for contextual, dynamic analysis of ethical conflicts in global research that is complementary to traditional codes of ethics. It emphasizes the need to consider ethical analysis as an iterative, reflective, process relevant at all stages of the research journey, including, ultimately, in evaluating the legacy of a project. The toolkit is presented as an open access website to promote universal access. A downloadable “pocket guide” version is also now available in 11 languages

Por ello, en el año 2019 se desarrolló un modelo de análisis de conflictos éticos en colaboración con más de 200 investigadores de más de 30 países. Este modelo parece pertinente para América Latina. El modelo propone que los desafíos éticos (y sus soluciones) dependen de cuatro factores presentes durante todo el proceso de investigación: el lugar donde se realiza la investigación, las personas involucradas, los principios éticos relevantes y los precedentes de investigaciones pasadas. En este artículo hacemos un análisis de la aplicabilidad de dicho modelo mediante dos análisis de casos referidos a la investigación con pueblos originarios en Chile y al trabajo con latinos migrantes en la frontera México-Estados Unidos.Intercultural research poses critical ethical challenges. In 2019, in collaboration with more than 200 researchers from more than 30 countries, a group of researchers developed an ethical conflict analysis model that seems relevant for Latin America. The model proposes a flexible frame of reference where ethical challenges (and their solutions) depend on four factors present throughout the research process: the place where the research is carried out, the people involved, the relevant ethical principles, and the precedents from previous research. This article discusses the applicability of this model through two case analyses: one study with Indigenous peoples in Chile and the other with Latin-American migrants on the border between Mexico and US

Desafíos éticos para la investigación en Latinoamérica

El propósito del estudio fue identificar los desafíos éticos que enfrentan los investigadores en Latinoamérica. Metodología: se planteó un estudio cualitativo en el que participaron 31 investigadores latinoamericanos, representantes de 6 países. En la primera fase, se realizó una encuesta en línea con pregunta abierta diligenciada por los 31 investigadores; en la segunda fase, una entrevista semiestructurada en donde participaron 23 de estos investigadores. Desarrollo: se identificaron 6 desafíos para la ética de la investigación: i) desde y hacia una Latinoamérica global, ii) hacia una cultura de investigación ética, iii) la ética dentro y fuera de la investigación, iv) relaciones humanas en investigación, v) presencia/ausencia de los comités de ética, vi) COVID-19, un nuevo escenario. Entre los aspectos más relevantes planteados por los participantes,se encuentran la generación de investigaciones sensibles a la variabilidad cultural que impactan positivamente las problemáticas locales, la necesidad de gestar alianzas sur-sur que definan políticas públicas en el tema, la reorientación de políticas latinoamericanas centradas en la región, el impulso a la formación en ética de la investigación desde inicios de la formación, la apertura de discusiones sobre el tema en la región para el desarrollo de directrices y una mayor conciencia en este tópico, la reflexión sobre el papel de los comités de ética como asesores y educadores, la flexibilidad en el consentimiento informado adaptable a las diversas condiciones y contextos, además de retos específicos derivados de la situación de pandemia por COVID-19
