    Integrity and Junkiness Failure Handling for Embedding-based Retrieval: A Case Study in Social Network Search

    Embedding based retrieval has seen its usage in a variety of search applications like e-commerce, social networking search etc. While the approach has demonstrated its efficacy in tasks like semantic matching and contextual search, it is plagued by the problem of uncontrollable relevance. In this paper, we conduct an analysis of embedding-based retrieval launched in early 2021 on our social network search engine, and define two main categories of failures introduced by it, integrity and junkiness. The former refers to issues such as hate speech and offensive content that can severely harm user experience, while the latter includes irrelevant results like fuzzy text matching or language mismatches. Efficient methods during model inference are further proposed to resolve the issue, including indexing treatments and targeted user cohort treatments, etc. Though being simple, we show the methods have good offline NDCG and online A/B tests metrics gain in practice. We analyze the reasons for the improvements, pointing out that our methods are only preliminary attempts to this important but challenging problem.     BACKGROUND: Studies in Arabidopsis show that DELLA genes may differentially affect responses to biotrophic and necrophic pathogens. A recent report based on the study of DELLA-producing reduced height (Rht) genes in wheat and barley also hypothesized that DELLA genes likely increased susceptibility to necrotrophs but increased resistance to biotrophs. RESULTS: Effects of uzu, a non-GA (gibberellic acid)-responsive semi-dwarfing gene, on Fusarium crown rot (FCR) resistance in barley were investigated. Fifteen pairs of near isogenic lines for this gene were generated and assessed under two different temperature regimes. Similar to its impacts on plant height, the semi-dwarfing gene uzu also showed larger effects on FCR severity in the high temperature regime when compared with that in the low temperature regime. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study add to the growing evidence showing that the effects of plant height on Fusarium resistances are unlikely related to DELLA genes but due to direct or indirect effects of height difference per se. The interaction between these two characteristics highlights the importance of understanding relationships between resistance and other traits of agronomic importance as the value of a resistance gene could be compromised if it dramatically affects plant development and morphology

    Dynamic event-triggered-based human-in-the-loop formation control for stochastic nonlinear MASs

    The dynamic event-triggered (DET) formation control problem of a class of stochastic nonlinear multi-agent systems (MASs) with full state constraints is investigated in this article. Supposing that the human operator sends commands to the leader as control input signals, all followers keep formation through network topology communication. Under the command-filter-based backstepping technique, the radial basis function neural networks (RBF NNs) and the barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) are utilized to resolve the problems of unknown nonlinear terms and full state constraints, respectively. Furthermore, a DET control mechanism is proposed to reduce the occupation of communication bandwidth. The presented distributed formation control strategy guarantees that all signals of the MASs are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) in probability. Finally, the feasibility of the theoretical research result is demonstrated by a simulation example

    Robustness analysis of discrete predictor-based controllers for input-delay systems

    In this article, robustness to model uncertainties are analysed in the context of discrete predictor-based state-feedback controllers for discrete-time input-delay systems with time-varying delay, in an LMI framework. The goal is comparing robustness of predictor-based strategies with respect to other (sub)optimal state feedback ones. A numerical example illustrates that improvements in tolerance to modelling errors can be achieved by using the predictor framework.The authors are grateful for grant nos.     Robustness of a discrete-time predictor-based controller for time-varying measurement delay

    A predictor-based controller for time-varying delay systems is presented in this paper and its robustness properties for different uncertainties are analyzed. First, a time-varying delay dependent stability condition is expressed in terms of LMIs. Then, uncertainties in the knowledge of all plant-model parameters are considered and the resulting closed-loop system is shown to be robust with respect to these uncertainties. A significant improvement with respect to the same control strategy without predictor is achieved. The scheme is applicable to open-loop unstable plants and it has been tested in a real-time application to control the roll angle of a quad-rotor helicopter prototype.     Accelerating I/O Processing in Server Architectures

    Ethernet continues to be the most widely used network architecture today due to its low cost and backward compatibility with the existing Ethernet infrastructure. Driven by increasing networking demands of cloud workloads such as Internet search, web hosting etc, network speed rapidly migrates from 1Gbps to 10Gbps and beyond. High speed networks require general purpose servers to provide highly efficient network processing. However, traditional architectural designs have been focused on CPUs and often decoupled from I/O considerations, thus being inefficient for network processing. In this study, we start with fine-grained driver and OS instrumentation to fully understand the network processing overhead over 10GbE on mainstream servers and make several new observations. Motivated by the studies, we propose a new server I/O architecture where DMA descriptor management is shifted from NICs to an on-chip network engine and descriptors are extended to address performance issues while processing packets. In addition, we also conduct extensive experiments on a real integrated NIC platform to understand the benefits of integrating NICs into CPU die. Our studies reveal that simple NIC integration gains little help. We therefore propose an enhanced integrated NIC (EINIC) to address the performance issues of high speed networks. We also find that TCP Control Block (TCB) can pose a challenge in web servers with a large volume of concurrent sessions. Therefore, we also analyze challenges from a large number of concurrent web sessions on managing per-session TCB and propose a new TCB cache architecture to manage TCB data for web servers. As virtualization has gained resurgent interest and is becoming a key enabling technology in cloud infrastructures, understanding and improving virtualized network processing performance over high speed networks becomes critical. We conduct an experimental study of virtualized network performance on servers with 10GE networking to identify its performance bottlenecks. Then, we develop two VMM scheduler optimizations and design a simplified switch to reduce the network virtualization overhead. We also propose efficient architectural support by extending Direct Cache Access (DCA) to effectively avoid cache misses on packets in virtualized environment

    Robust Finite-Time Control for Nonlinear Markovian Jump Systems with Time Delay under Partially Known Transition Probabilities

    This paper is concerned with the problem of robust finite-time H∞ control for a class of nonlinear Markovian jump systems with time delay under partially known transition probabilities. Firstly, for the nominal nonlinear Markovian jump systems, sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure finite-time boundedness, H∞ finite-time boundedness, and finite-time H∞ state feedback stabilization, respectively. Then, a robust finite-time H∞ state feedback controller is designed, which, for all admissible uncertainties, guarantees the H∞ finite-time boundedness of the corresponding closed-loop system. All the conditions are presented in terms of strict linear matrix inequalities. Finally a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of all the results
