Special Issue “Rethinking the Subjective Wellbeing for a New Workplace Scenario”
From the public health policies’ view, promoting subjective wellbeing is a must because it positively influences employee health and longevity. In addition, the International Labour Organization (ILO) promotes changes to achieve decent jobs, and one of the main challenges is to mitigate the intense pressure to adapt workplace conditions to meet new organizational goals. Subjective wellbeing has been widely addressed in the literature. For example, in 1999, Diener et al. reviewed three decades of work on this topic, and Danna and Griffith conceptualized previous research on wellbeing in the workplace. Twenty years later, Diener quantified more than 170,000 articles and books concerning this topic published in academia
Assessment of reschooling programs in Chile: The students’ perspective
Today we face the ongoing challenge of adapting ourselves to the demands of a changing world. In this context, education becomes crucial, especially the programs aimed at people who, for various reasons, have not completed primary and/or secondary school, considering the consequences that incomplete schooling has on these people. This study aims to investigate and compare the profiles and assessments of students who attend three reschooling programs in Chile (reintegration projects, regular, and flexible modalities), using the data produced by a survey in Santiago, Chile, with 523 people who attend one of these programs, involving twenty-three different educational institutions. The random sample was drawn by cluster sampling technique, and the sampling frame was built up from the total enrollment records provided by the National Coordination of Education for Youth and Adults of the Ministry of Education of Chile. In addition to differences observed between the students’ profiles attending the three kinds of reschooling programs, results allow to conclude that assessments and perceptions of students regarding these programs are positive, although participants in the most vulnerable groups appear to be more critical
Evaluating a voucher system in Chile. Individual, family and school characteristics
Private provision of education is a topic which has received a great deal of discussion
around the world in recent years. Free choice of schools and a voucher system providing
public funding to both private and public schools are in place in Chile and have been
operating for twenty years. This article provides evidence on the educational determinants
of access to higher education and social mobility. The study uses the Academic Aptitude
Test (PAA) database, 1998. The PAA is an instrument designed to evaluate the abilities and
knowledge of those students who have completed secondary education. This information is
used to estimate educational production functions. Three categories of variables (inputs) are
hypothesized as explaining educational achievement: individual, family, and school
characteristics. The voucher system is “evaluated” by comparing the impact of different
school types (privately paid, private subsidized (voucher), and public schools) on academic
performance.
The voucher system assumes the competition generated among schools will improve the
quality of education. Evidence obtained by using OLS estimates indicates that attending a
private subsidized school does increase standardized test scores, but the impact is relatively
small. The voucher schools perform more akin to public than private schools. However,
when TSLS models are estimated in order to control for school choice, the impact of
attending a private subsidized school increases significantly. At the same time the impact of
the parent’s education is reduced significantly. Therefore, parental characteristics operate in
the selection of school type, and as such their impact has been overestimated with respect to
the OLS model. Therefore, the Chilean voucher system succeeds as an instrument that
provides social mobility. Policy makers should support a voucher system and increase its
availability. Another relevant finding is that while female students are more likely to obtain
better grades than their male counterparts during high school, their PAA test scores are
significantly lower
School dropout in youth and adult resettlement programs : an assessment of the Chilean experience
The purpose of the research is to analyze adult education implemented by the Ministry of Education in Chile, based on the experience and experiences of the educational actors themselves, in order to understand the meanings that students who attend the programs of Adult Education, they give their experiences, educational and social trajectories, with respect to their articulation with the educational offer provided by the Ministry of Education. This research is intended to contribute to the understanding of some principles that allow students to articulate their expectations and meanings with the education offered by the Ministry of Education. For this reason, the compatibility of school literacy with social inclusion and the strengthening of the exercise of citizenship and social participation will also be investigated. Methodologically, a comprehensive-interpretative approach research is proposed, implemented under the guidelines of qualitative approaches, despite the incorporation of some quantitative background of context. From the qualitative perspective, it is proposed, from a structural sample located in the metropolitan region, to analyze the discourses and representations of the main school actors, students, teachers and managers, to triangulate to establish the relevance and quality of the Education of Adults, focused on the meanings and attributes of these school actors. The research is justified, to the extent that results obtained by Adult Education, point out that this student population abandons these programs early, increasing the risk factors of academic failure and decreasing the impact of public policies in favor of social inclusion and the exercise of citizenship of the most neglected sectors of Chile.
Inequality, segregation and the Chilean labour market
The aim of this paper is to shed some light on the dynamics of the Chilean labour market
over the last thirty years or so. We investigate the relations between wage inequality and the
level of segregation which characterise the Chilean society as a whole. We show the presence
of high segregation in the labour market, and we argue in favour of the existence of a casual
nexus between segregation and wage inequality. We test our hypothesis calculating a
segregation index and testing causality, in the Granger sense, with a Gini index over the period
1967 – 1996. We also measure the magnitude of the impact of segregation on inequality
through OLS estimations
Does gender and birth order matter when parent specialize in child’s nutrition?.Evidence from Chile
Parental decisions have a profound effect on a child’s human capital
development. Given the family’s endowment, the way parents decide how to
allocate household resources has a direct impact on the child’s health and
education. These decisions, in turn, may affect not only the productivity of
the children once they have grown up, but also impact their life expectancy.
It is in this context that the present paper emphasizes the impact of family
resources and parental preferences on the provision of child health within the
household.
We explore child nutritional status and parental resources within
households in Chile. Unlike the traditional family literature that conceives
the household as a single decision-maker, we adopt an intrahousehold
allocation approach, relax the unitary preferences assumption, and introduce
a health production function to disentangle how parental preferences and
differences in parental child-rearing technology affect the nutritional status
of the child. In particular, we test whether there is any gender or birth-order
differentiation by parents that could be captured through the nutritional status
of the child, conditional on each parent’s characteristics. The gender and birthorder
analysis is based on the machismo sentiment in both sexes that is often
encountered in the Chilean family (Raczynski and Serrano, 1986). In addition,
the birth-order hypothesis allows one to capture any parental apprenticeshi
Evidence of neighborhood effects on educational performance in the chilean school voucher system
This paper uses alternative measures of neighborhood quality to study its impact on student
performance in school. The Chilean voucher-based education system allows us to test separately
for neighborhood and traditional in-classroom peer effects, which have been traditionally emphasized
by the literature. We use the Human Development Index reported by United Nations, and
the relative number of books in public libraries at the county level, to measure neighborhood
quality. We find that a 5 basis point increase in the HDI Index, is related to an increase of 1 to 4
points in the SIMCE test, depending on the specification. The effect is equivalent to half a year
increase in mothers education (one additional year achieves a 7 point increase in SIMCE scores).
Interestingly, the effect remains when we look at the sample of random movers
