    Joint Design of Overlaid Communication Systems and Pulsed Radars

    The focus of this paper is on co-existence between a communication system and a pulsed radar sharing the same bandwidth. Based on the fact that the interference generated by the radar onto the communication receiver is intermittent and depends on the density of scattering objects (such as, e.g., targets), we first show that the communication system is equivalent to a set of independent parallel channels, whereby pre-coding on each channel can be introduced as a new degree of freedom. We introduce a new figure of merit, named the {\em compound rate}, which is a convex combination of rates with and without interference, to be optimized under constraints concerning the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (including {\em signal-dependent} interference due to clutter) experienced by the radar and obviously the powers emitted by the two systems: the degrees of freedom are the radar waveform and the afore-mentioned encoding matrix for the communication symbols. We provide closed-form solutions for the optimum transmit policies for both systems under two basic models for the scattering produced by the radar onto the communication receiver, and account for possible correlation of the signal-independent fraction of the interference impinging on the radar. We also discuss the region of the achievable communication rates with and without interference. A thorough performance assessment shows the potentials and the limitations of the proposed co-existing architecture

    Beampattern Design for Transmit Architectures Based on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

    In this work, we consider a transmit architecture where few active antennas (sources), each equipped with a dedicated radio frequency chain, illuminate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that control the beam-steering capability of the whole system. In this framework, we tackle the beampattern design problem, where the waveform emitted by the sources and the phase shifts introduced by the RIS are designed so that the realized beampattern matches, in a least-square sense, the desired one. The design of this architecture can be useful in many areas, such as radar detection and tracking, millimeter wave, sub-THz, and THz communications, and integrated sensing and communications. We provide a sub-optimum solution to the beampattern design problem, and we report an example to show that this RIS-based transmit architecture can be competitive with respect to fully-digital MIMO systems, especially if constant-modulus waveforms are required.Comment: Submitted for possible publication to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin

    Joint Design of surveillance radar and MIMO communication in cluttered environments

    In this study, we consider a spectrum sharing architecture, wherein a multiple-input multiple-output communication system cooperatively coexists with a surveillance radar. The degrees of freedom for system design are the transmit powers of both systems, the receive linear filters used for pulse compression and interference mitigation at the radar receiver, and the space-time communication codebook. The design criterion is the maximization of the mutual information between the input and output symbols of the communication system, subject to constraints aimed at safeguarding the radar performance. Unlike previous studies, we do not require any time-synchronization between the two systems, and we guarantee the radar performance on all of the range-azimuth cells of the patrolled region under signal-dependent (endogenous) and signal-independent (exogenous) interference. This leads to a non-convex problem, and an approximate solution is thus introduced using a block coordinate ascent method. A thorough analysis is provided to show the merits of the proposed approach and emphasize the inherent tradeoff among the achievable mutual information, the density of scatterers in the environment, and the number of protected radar cells.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transaction on Signal Processing on June 24, 201

    Abstract Underplatform dampers (UPDs) are still in use to reduce the vibration amplitude of turbine blades and to shift the position of resonant frequencies. The dynamics of blades with UPDs is nonlinear and the analysis is challenging from both the experimental and the numerical point of view. A key point in obtaining a predictive numerical tool is the choice of the correct contact parameters (contact stiffness and friction coefficient) that are required as input to the contact model. The paper presents different approaches to choose these parameters: the contact stiffness in normal and tangential direction are both calculated and measured. The calculation is based on the analytical models in literature, the measurements are carried out on a dedicated test rig. The friction coefficient is also measured. Test results of the forced response of the same bladed disk with UPDs are available for each blade, they come from an experimental campaign under controlled excitation and centrifugal force. The forced response of the bladed disk is not used as a mean to tune the contact parameters, but rather as a validation tool: the effect of the different choices of contact parameters in the code is highlighted by the comparison of the calculated and experimental forced response of the bladed disk

    Foundations of MIMO Radar Detection Aided by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

    A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a nearly-passive flat layer made of inexpensive elements that can add a tunable phase shift to the impinging electromagnetic wave and are controlled by a low-power electronic circuit. This paper considers the fundamental problem of target detection in a RIS-aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. At first, a general signal model is introduced, which includes the possibility of using up to two RISs (one close to the radar transmitter and one close to the radar receiver) and subsumes both a monostatic and a bistatic radar configuration with or without a line-of-sight view of the prospective target. Upon resorting to a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), the design of the phase shifts introduced by the RIS elements is formulated as the maximization of the probability of detection in the location under inspection for a fixed probability of false alarm, and suitable optimization algorithms are proposed. The performance analysis shows the benefits granted by the presence of the RISs and shed light on the interplay among the key system parameters, such as the radar-RIS distance, the RIS size, and location of the prospective target. A major finding is that the RISs should be better deployed in the near-field of the radar arrays at both the transmit and the receive side.     Quality of bladder cancer treatment information on YouTube: May the user’s profile affect the quality of results?

    Background: Social media are widely used information tools, including the medical/health field. Unfortunately, the levels of misinformation on these platforms seem to be high, with a medium-low quality of the proposed content, as evidenced by previous studies. You Tube is one of the most important platforms for audio/video content. It shows content to users through a recommendation algorithm system. Materials and methods: We have classified in two cohorts the first results obtained by researching "bladder tumor treatment" on You Tube through two different user profiles: "Cohort A" with a not logged-in session in incognito mode (46 videos enrolled) and "Cohort B" with a logged-in session with a physician profile (50 videos enrolled). The videos were evaluated using validated instruments such as DISCERN and PEMAT-AV Furthermore, we used a Likert’s scale for the evaluation of levels of misinformation. Results: Overall quality of information was moderate to poor (DISCERN 3) in 54% of cohort A and 24% of cohort B. Moreover, a high degree of misinformation (Likert score 3) was found in 52% of cohort A cases and 32% of cohort B. Conclusions: Levels of misinformation in both cohorts are positively correlated to the number of views per month. Globally, the levels of information quality, understandability and actionability are lower for the results obtained from searches performed with anonymous user profile (Cohort A)

    Consensus document on controversial issues for the treatment of infections of the central nervous system: bacterial brain abscesses

    Summary Background Bacterial brain abscesses remain a serious central nervous system problem despite advances in neurosurgical, neuroimaging, and microbiological techniques and the availability of new antibiotics. The successful treatment of brain abscesses requires surgery, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and eradication of the primary source; nevertheless many controversial issues on the management of this serious infection remain unresolved. Controversial issues The aim of this GISIG (Gruppo Italiano di Studio sulle Infezioni Gravi) working group – a panel of multidisciplinary experts – was to define recommendations for some controversial issues using an evidence-based and analytical approach. The controversial issues were: (1) Which patients with bacterial brain abscesses can be managed safely using medical treatment alone? (1a) What is the efficacy in terms of outcome, tolerability, cost/efficacy, and quality of life of the different antibiotic regimens used to treat bacterial cerebral abscesses? (1b) Which antibiotics have the best pharmacokinetics and/or tissue penetration of brain and/or brain abscess? 2) What is the best surgical approach in terms of outcome in managing bacterial brain abscesses? Results are presented and discussed in detail. Methods A systematic literature search using the MEDLINE database for the period 1988 to 2008 of randomized controlled trials and/or non-randomized studies was performed. A matrix was created to extract evidence from original studies using the CONSORT method to evaluate randomized clinical trials and the Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale for case–control studies, longitudinal cohorts, and retrospective studies.     Grapevine field experiments reveal the contribution of genotype, the influence of environment and the effect of their interaction (GxE) on berry transcriptome

    Changes in the performance of genotypes in different environments are defined as genotype x environment (GxE) interactions. In grapevine (Vitis vinifera), complex interactions between different genotypes and climate, soil, and farming practices yield unique berry qualities. However, the molecular basis of this phenomenon remains unclear. To dissect the basis of grapevine GxE interactions, we characterized berry transcriptome plasticity, genome methylation landscape, and within-genotype allelic diversity in two genotypes, cultivated in three different environments, over two vintages. We identified, through a novel data-mining pipeline, genes with expression profiles that were unaffected by genotype or environment, genotype-dependent but unaffected by the environment, environmentally-dependent regardless of genotype, and GxE-related. The GxE-related genes showed different degrees of within-cultivar allelic diversity in the two genotypes and were enriched for stress responses, signal transduction and secondary metabolism categories. Our study unraveled the mutual relationships between genotypic and environmental variables during GxE interaction in a woody perennial species, providing a reference model to explore how cultivated fruit crops respond to diverse environments.     Ceftolozane/Tazobactam for Treatment of Severe ESBL-Producing Enterobacterales Infections: A Multicenter Nationwide Clinical Experience (CEFTABUSE II Study)

    Background. Few data are reported in the literature about the outcome of patients with severe extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) infections treated with ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T), in empiric or definitive therapy.Methods. A multicenter retrospective study was performed in Italy (June 2016-June 2019). Successful clinical outcome was defined as complete resolution of clinical signs/symptoms related to ESBL-E infection and lack of microbiological evidence of infection. The primary end point was to identify predictors of clinical failure of C/T therapy.Results. C/T treatment was documented in 153 patients: pneumonia was the most common diagnosis (n = 46, 30%), followed by 34 cases of complicated urinary tract infections (22.2%). Septic shock was observed in 42 (27.5%) patients. C/T was used as empiric therapy in 46 (30%) patients and as monotherapy in 127 (83%) patients. Favorable clinical outcome was observed in 128 (83.7%) patients; 25 patients were considered to have failed C/T therapy. Overall, 30-day mortality was reported for 15 (9.8%) patients. At multivariate analysis, Charlson comorbidity index >4 (odds ratio [OR], 2.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.9-3.5; P = .02), septic shock (OR, 6.2; 95% CI, 3.8-7.9; P < .001), and continuous renal replacement therapy (OR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.9-5.3; P = .001) were independently associated with clinical failure, whereas empiric therapy displaying in vitro activity (OR, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.01-0.34; P < .001) and adequate source control of infection (OR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.14-0.55; P < .001) were associated with clinical success.Conclusions. Data show that C/T could be a valid option in empiric and/or targeted therapy in patients with severe infections caused by ESBL-producing Enterobacterales. Clinicians should be aware of the risk of clinical failure with standard-dose C/T therapy in septic patients receiving CRRT
