    Waste marble dust blended cement

    Marble processing activities generates a.significant amount of waste in dust form. This waste, which is nowadays one of the environmental problems worldwide, presents great potential of being used as mineral addition in blended cements production. This paper shows preliminary results of an ongoing project which ultimate goal is to investigate the viability of using waste marble dust (WMD), produced by marble Portuguese industry, as cement replacement material. In order to evaluate the effects of the WMD on mechanical behaviour, different mortar blended cement mixtures were tested. These mixtures were prepared with different partial substitution level of cement with WMD. Strength results of WMD blended cements were compared to control cements with same level of incorporation of natural limestone used to produce commercial Portland-limestone cements. The results obtained show that WMD blended cements perform better than limestone blended cements for same replacement level up to 20% w/w. Therefore, WMD reveals promising attributes for blended cements production

    Deployment of electric buses: Planning the fleet size and type, charging infrastructure and operations with an optimization-based model

    The current awareness about climate change creates the urgency in adjusting the services provided in public transport towards more sustainable operations. Recent studies have shown that the integration of electric vehicles into existing fleets is an alternative that allows reducing CO2 emissions, thus contributing to a more sustainable provision of services in the sector. When the aim is to achieve a full electrification of a bus fleet, several decisions need to be planned, such as i) the number of buses that are required, ii) the types of batteries used in those vehicles, iii) the charging technologies and strategies, iv) the location of the charging stations, and v) the frequency of charging. Nevertheless, although several planning studies have focused on the full electrification of a bus fleet, no study was found considering all these planning decisions that are deemed as essential for an adequate planning. Our study thus contributes to this gap in the literature, by proposing an optimization-based planning model that considers all these planning dimensions in the decision-making process related to the integration of electric buses in a public bus transport system – the MILP4ElectFleet model. All these decisions are evaluated while ensuring the minimization of in-vestment and operating costs.     Planning health workforce training in the detection and prevention of excessive alcohol consumption: an optimization-based approach

    The adequate training of health workforce in the field of excessive alcohol consumption is essential to provide health professionals with the necessary tools for an adequate provision of care, thus leading to a decrease in alcohol consumption. Proper planning of such training is thus essential, but literature in this area is still scarce. This paper proposes an optimization model based on mathematical programming for supporting the planning of health workforce training in the field of excessive alcohol consumption in National Health Service-based countries – the WFTMalcohol. The model aims at informing on (i) how many health professionals (physicians and nurses) should be trained per year and health unit, and (ii) which training packages should be available per year. The model allows exploring the impact of considering different objectives relevant in this sector, including the minimization of costs and the maximization of multiple performance indicators. Acknowledging that several sources of uncertainty may affect planning decisions, a sensitivity analysis on key parameters of the model is performed. To illustrate the applicability of the model, a case study based on the Oeste Sul ACES in Lisbon is analyzed.     Influence of the particle size and animal slurry type on the potential of nitrogen mineralization after soil incorporation

    RAMIRAN International ConferenceAnimal manures are rich in organic matter and nutrients, namely nitrogen (N) and, consequently, widely applied to soil as organic fertilizers. However, a large part of the nitrogen contained in animal manures is in the organic form and so not directly available for plants. Indeed, organic N has to be mineralized prior to plant uptake (Rees and Castle, 2002). Several manure characteristics as the C:N ratio (Chadwick et al., 2000), the lignin content (Kristensen, 1996) and the NH4 +/organic N ratio (Beauchamp and Paul, 1989) have been suggested as indicators of the plant-available N. More recently, Fangueiro et al. (2008) showed that the potential of N mineralization (PNM) of cattle slurry is inversely correlated with slurry particle size: finest fractions are the particle-size fractions from which N mineralization occurs in slurries whereas coarser fractions are associated with immobilization. Furthermore, Moller et al. (2002) reported that animal diet and anaerobic decomposition during storage in slurry channels and stores affect the slurry particle size distribution. Such information is of great interest since the finest slurry particle size should infiltrate the soil more easily and quickly relative to the coarser slurry particle size that should remain close to soil surface. Furthermore, mechanical slurry separation is now performed in many pig and dairy farms in order to improve slurry management in terms of nutrients utilization and reducing costs related to slurry storage. Slurry separation by screw press leads to a nutrient rich organic solid fraction (0.7– 3.2 mm particles) that may be composted and a liquid fraction that can be used for fertigation. In the present study, three types of slurry (pig, duck and cattle) were separated into 4 slurry particle size fractions (>2000 um, 2000-500 um, 500-100 um, <100 um) in order to assess the influence of the type of slurry and slurry particle size on the PNM after soil incorporation

    Measuring Efficiency and Productivity Growth of New Technology-Based Firms in Business Incubators: The Portuguese Case Study of Madan Parque

    Business incubators can play a major role in helping to turn a business idea into a technology-based organization that is economically efficient. However, there is a shortage in the literature regarding the efficiency evaluation and productivity evolution of the new technology-based firms (NTBFs) in the incubation scope. This study develops a model based on the data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology, which allows the incubated NTBFs to evaluate and improve the efficiency of their management. Moreover, the Malmquist index is used to examine productivity change. The index is decomposed into multiple components to give insights into the root sources of productivity change. The proposed model was applied in a case study with 13 NTBFs incubated. From that study, we conclude that inefficient firms invest excessively in research and development (R&D), and, on average, firms have a productivity growth in the period of study

    On stochastic aspects of impact modeling of the innovation incentive system and business internationalization: evidence from Portuguese SMEs

    Multivariate normal distribution is base for many statistical techniques, including ordinary least square inference. Here we show that in order to make research on Internationalization of Companies, more flexible approach is needed, namely partial least squares (PLS). It is a nonparametric technique, used in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), which makes no distributional assumptions and also may be applied with small sample sizes. In this study we discuss on regularity conditions for PLS from the perspective of semi-continuous covariance which fills the gap in the current studies. The stochastic aspects, especially those related to usage of PLS-SEM, can be well integrated to the topologically grounded regression, where jumps in the covariances can occur. The purpose of the research is to analyze and understand the impact of the Incentive System (IS) for Innovation, within the scope of the National Strategic Reference Framework (QREN) 2014-2020, on the Internationalization of Portuguese Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). We study stochastic aspects of theoretical model which aggregates the variables Product Innovation, Marketing Innovation, Organizational Innovation and Working Conditions as determinants of Internationalization of Companies. Data were collected based on a quantitative methodology, through a self-completion questionnaire using the Likert psychometric scale, which registered 120 participants. Organizational Innovation (exogenous latent construct) and Product Innovation have shown a statistically significant indirect effect on the Internationalization of Companies (endogenous latent construct) through Marketing Innovation. The latter has a direct effect on the Internationalization (target construct).     Casting A356+SiCp with ultrasonically treated melts: effect reinforcement and processing in the microstructure

    Low mass fractions (0.05 wt%) of SiC micro sized particles have been added to an A356 melt and dispersed by ultrasonic vibration to study their impact on the microstructural morphology of cast samples. It is shown that the ultrasonic melt treatment at 680°C can promote a homogenizeddistribution of the reinforcement while also degassing the melt and induces a moderate grain refinement. Even though SiC may act as a nucleant, its use did not induce a significant grain refinement relatively to ultrasonically treated unreinforced melts. Adding SiC microparticles, however, seems to enhance Eutectic Si modification, although it contributes to its slight coarsening at the expense of Mg2Si.publishe

    Rate adaptation for wireless video streaming based on error statistics

    This paper presents a new rate-control algorithm for live video streaming over wireless IP networks, which is based on selective frame discarding. In the proposed mechanism excess 'P' frames are dropped from the output queue at the sender using a congestion estimate based on packet loss statistics obtained from RTCP feedback and from the Data Link (DL) layer. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated through computer simulation. This paper also presents a characterisation of packet losses owing to transmission errors and congestion, which can help in choosing appropriate strategies to maximise the video quality experienced by the end user.
