The aim of the study was to determine the multilocus sequence types of Escherichia coli from diseased farm rabbits and apparently healthy wild lagomorphs, and the genetic relatedness among them. Fifty-five enteropathogenic E. coli from reared rabbits and 32 from wild rabbits and hares were characterised by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) according to the Michigan State University EcMLST scheme. Isolates were differentiated into 37 sequence types (STs), which were grouped into 8 clonal complexes (CCs). The most common ST was ST140 (CC31), followed by ST238 and ST119 (CC17). MLST analysis revealed 22 novel STs. Phylogenetic analyses showed a heterogeneous distribution of STs into 3 clusters of genetically related strains. The genetic relationship among STs of different origin and the detection of new, as well as previously described STs as human pathogens, indicate a widespread distribution and adaptability of particular lineages to different hosts. These findings highlight the need for further research to improve the knowledge about E. coli populations colonising the gut of lagomorphs and their zoonotic potential

Identification of Altered miRNAs in Cerumen of Dogs Affected by Otitis Externa

Otitis externa is one of the most common diseases in dogs. It is associated with bacteria and yeast, which are regarded as secondary causes. Cerumen is a biological substance playing an important role in the protection of ear skin. The involvement of cerumen in immune defense is poorly understood. MicroRNAs can modulate the host immune response and can provide promising biomarkers for several inflammatory and infectious disorder diagnosis. The aims of this study were to profile the cerumen miRNA signature associated with otitis externa in dogs, integrate miRNAs to their target genes related to immune functions, and investigate their potential use as biomarkers. Cerumen was collected from healthy and otitis affected dogs and the expression of miRNAs was profiled by Next Generation Sequencing; the validation of the altered miRNAs was performed using RT-qPCR. The potential ability of miRNAs to modulate immune-related genes was investigated using bioinformatics tools. The results pointed out that 32 miRNAs, of which 14 were up- and 18 down-regulated, were differentially expressed in healthy vs. otitis-affected dogs. These results were verified by RT-qPCR. To assess the diagnostic value of miRNAs, ROC analysis was carried out, highlighting that 4 miRNAs are potential biomarkers to discriminate otitis-affected dogs. Bioinformatics showed that cerumen miRNAs may be involved in the modulation of host immune response. In conclusion, we have demonstrated for the first time that miRNAs can be efficiently extracted and quantified from cerumen, that their profile changes between healthy and otitis affected dogs, and that they may serve as potential biomarkers. Further studies are necessary to confirm their diagnostic value and to investigate their interaction with immune-related genes

The new non-fiction picturebook for children is conceived not just as an informational book, but first and foremost as a beautiful object, characterized by a largely visual and proudly creative approach to knowledge. By blending information and artistic illustration/design, transmission of data and sophisticated aesthetic experimentation, this medium seems to bring successfully together the rational/explicit and the aesthetic/intuitive way of attending to the world, with promising consequences for the development of an integrated learning experience. Applying the findings of cognitive sciences to the analysis of non-fiction picturebooks can be enlightening to understand the full potential of such books in sharing knowledge with children. Their intrinsic multimodality and ability to stimulate different parts of the reader’s brain makes them valuable in any educational context revolving around the paradigm of complexity and having connection (as opposed to disjunction) of different levels of experience as its aim.

While the non-fiction picturebook for children has exploded as a publishing phenomenon since about 2010, only recently have scholars started to investigate this new medium, its characteristics, its educational/aesthetic potential. This volume brings together the contributions of 12 scholars of children's literature from many different countries, all of them interested in developing a critical analysis of this new kind of non-fiction for children, so very different from traditional learning books as for their communication strategies

The New Non-Fiction Picturebook for Children: Mending the Rift Between Science and Art

Specific to our modern world is the dualism between scientific research and the humanities, between the knowledge derived from the natural sciences, with their positive experimental approach, and the indemonstrable yet profound intuitions and insights revealed to us by literature, poetry, art, philosophy and physical and emotional engagement with the world. Official Western culture has tended to create an unbridgeable divide between these two aspects of knowing that seem mutually exclusive (Snow 1977). Today, however, a new genre of book for children, the artistic non-fiction picturebook, is bringing these two worlds together in a surprisingly refreshing way. This paper investigates how vital the blending of these two perspectives is, and why the creative, beautifully crafted, powerfully illustrated non-fiction picturebook allows an innovative and culturally crucial approach to knowledge
