    Fort Vancouver Mobile

Mobile phones have become ubiquitous yet remain untapped as a storytelling medium. They offer the power of media, text, audio, video, animation, in a fully personalized format. Through GPS technology these devices even can locate a user and share, on the precise spot, data tailored just for that user's particular interest. Users then can add written responses, video or sound about a site or event. The implications for such authoring precision, audience awareness and interactivity pose exciting challenges to the team creating the Fort Vancouver Mobile project, a storytelling environment accessible via smart phones that tells the history of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Phase I, just completed, comprises apps for the iPhone and Android and a story module focusing on Hawaiians who lived and worked at the site in the mid 1800s. Phase II, the focus on this proposal, seeks $50,000 to create modules focusing on gender issues at the site that have, heretofore, gone unexamined

Pathfinders: Documenting the Experience of Early Digital Literature

    Get PDF
The Pathfinders project records performances by authors and ordinary readers of key early works of electronic literature, and develops presentation strategies to make these recordings accessible and useful to scholars and teachers. In the process we 1) preserve vanishing cultural material; 2) develop new strategies for recording and disseminating that material; and 3) provide prototypes for similar work on other digital texts

The Epidemiologic Aspects of Salmonella Shedding in Wild Birds of TExas

Wildlife have become increasingly important as vectors for zoonotic disease. As reservoirs, wild birds have some of the greatest potential to disseminate pathogens across a large area. Due to its broad host range and public health importance, the transmission of Salmonella in birds can carry significant risks to human and animal health. The objectives of this dissertation is to determine the prevalence of Salmonella shedding in birds in various settings, to identify potential risks to human and animal health, and to evaluate ecological factors that may affect Salmonella prevalence. Wild birds were sampled in three settings: passerines in an urban environment in eastern Texas, waterfowl in wildlife management areas along the Texas coast, and passerines at a feedlot in central Texas. Demographic and environmental data was collected for each sampled bird. Standard bacteriologic culture methods were used to isolate Salmonella and, in most cases, isolates were characterized by serotype and antimicrobial susceptibility. Overall, the apparent prevalence of Salmonella shedding was very low compared to domestic species such as cattle and domestic poultry. In urban bird species, 1.8% (2/114) were found to be shedding Salmonella. This suggests that the threat these birds pose to public health is limited. However, the large numbers in which these birds congregate in urban areas, especially near grocery and retail stores, makes even the low prevalence of Salmonella shedding still a concern. Similarly, in waterfowl the prevalence of Salmonella shedding was very low (0.5%, 2/375). While the tendency of waterfowl to utilize agricultural fields and surface waters may potentially lead to contamination, the risk to public health appears minimal compared to the risk posed by Salmonella shedding in domestic poultry. Prevalence of Salmonella shedding was dramatically different in wild birds congregating in feedlots with 29.2% (28/96). This contrast is interesting considering that many of the same species as sampled in an urban setting were also sampled at the feedlot. The prevalence of Salmonella shedding in birds was not significantly associated with the prevalence of Salmonella shedding in cattle. This dissertation shows that prevalence of Salmonella shedding among wild birds in Texas can vary dramatically and suggests that environmental factors may affect the prevalence. More research will need to be done to determine how these factors influence the prevalence in birds and what the prevalence of shedding is in other bird groups in Texas

A lacustrine record of the early stage of the Miocene Climatic Optimum in Central Europe from the Most Basin, Ohře (Eger) Graben, Czech Republic.

21 pagesInternational audienceThis study reports on a ~ 150 m thick macrofossil-barren sequence of siliciclastic sediments from a Burdigalian age (Early Miocene) freshwater lake. The lake was located within an incipient rift system of the Most Basin in the Ohře (Eger) Graben, which was part of the European Cenozoic Rift System, and had an original area of ≈ 1000 km2. Sediments from the HK591 core that cover the entire thickness of the lake deposits and some of the adjacent stratigraphic units were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (a proxy for element composition) and magnetic polarity measurement. The element proxies were subjected to frequency analysis, which provided estimated sedimentation rates, and allowed for sediment dating by magnetostratigraphy and orbital tuning of the age model. Based on the resulting age model and the known biostratigraphy, the lake was present between 17.4 and 16.6 Ma, which includes the onset of the Miocene Climatic Optimum in the latest Early Miocene. The identification of orbital forcing (precession, obliquity and short eccentricity cycles) confirms the stability of the sedimentary environment of the perennial lake in an underfilled basin. The dating allowed the sediment record to be interpreted in the context of the current knowledge of the European climate during that period. The stability of the sedimentary environment confirms that precipitation was relatively stable over the period recorded by the sediments

International ocean discovery program expedition 372 preliminary report creeping gas hydrate slides and Hikurangi LWD

International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 372 combined two research topics, slow slip events (SSEs) on subduction faults (IODP Proposal 781A-Full) and actively deforming gas hydrate-bearing landslides (IODP Proposal 841-APL). Our study area on the Hikurangi margin, east of the coast of New Zealand, provided unique locations for addressing both research topics.SSEs at subduction zones are an enigmatic form of creeping fault behavior. They typically occur on subduction zones at depths beyond the capabilities of ocean floor drilling. However, at the northern Hikurangi subduction margin they are among the best-documented and shallowest on Earth. Here, SSEs may extend close to the trench, where clastic and pelagic sediments about 1.0-1.5 km thick overlie the subducting, seamount-studded Hikurangi Plateau. Geodetic data show that these SSEs recur about every 2 years and are associated with measurable seafloor displacement. The northern Hikurangi subduction margin thus provides an excellent setting to use IODP capabilities to discern the mechanisms behind slow slip fault behaviour
