A Novel Design for a Robot Grappling Hook for use in a Nuclear Cave Environment
© 2016 Within the field of robotics there exist few designs for detachable grappling hooks. This paper focusses on the novel design of a detachable grappling hook for use within a nuclear cave environment. The design seeks to exploit the complex network of pipes that is present within a nuclear cave. It is hoped that the grapple may be used to aid with mapping and characterisation of the nuclear cave, as well as increasing the movement capabilities of robots within the cave. It is shown that our prototype grapple is able to support on average 2.4kg of mass, or thirty times its own weight. In addition when dropped from a height of 7.5cm, which removes ballistic instability, the grapple is able to engage itself 87% of the time. Finally the minimum speed that the grapple must be travelling, in order to secure itself to its target, is found to be 1.08m/s
Delayed presentation of Subclavian venous thrombosis following undisplaced clavicle fracture
Medial clavicle fractures are uncommon, accounting for approximately 5 percent of all clavicle fractures. Vascular injuries are uncommon but are recognised as either an immediate complication due to transection of the vessel by the displaced fracture, or as a late complication, secondary to compression from abundant callus formation. We present an unusual case of positional venous insufficiency in the upper limb as an immediate complication of a closed, minimally displaced clavicle fracture, with secondary subclavian venous thrombosis formation eleven days following the injury
Three Dimensional Root CT Segmentation Using Multi-Resolution Encoder-Decoder Networks
© 1992-2012 IEEE. We address the complex problem of reliably segmenting root structure from soil in X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) images. We utilise a deep learning approach, and propose a state-of-the-art multi-resolution architecture based on encoder-decoders. While previous work in encoder-decoders implies the use of multiple resolutions simply by downsampling and upsampling images, we make this process explicit, with branches of the network tasked separately with obtaining local high-resolution segmentation, and wider low-resolution contextual information. The complete network is a memory efficient implementation that is still able to resolve small root detail in large volumetric images. We compare against a number of different encoder-decoder based architectures from the literature, as well as a popular existing image analysis tool designed for root CT segmentation. We show qualitatively and quantitatively that a multi-resolution approach offers substantial accuracy improvements over a both a small receptive field size in a deep network, or a larger receptive field in a shallower network. We then further improve performance using an incremental learning approach, in which failures in the original network are used to generate harder negative training examples. Our proposed method requires no user interaction, is fully automatic, and identifies large and fine root material throughout the whole volume
The relationship between structural game characteristics and gambling behavior: a population-level study
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the structural characteristics and gambling behavior among video lottery terminal (VLT) gamblers. The study was ecological valid, because the data consisted of actual gambling behavior registered in the participants natural gambling environment without intrusion by researchers. Online behavioral tracking data from Multix, an eight game video lottery terminal, were supplied by Norsk-Tipping (the state owned gambling company in Norway). The sample comprised the entire population of Multix gamblers (N = 31,109) who had gambled in January 2010. The individual number of bets made across games was defined as the dependent variable, reward characteristics of a game (i.e., payback percentage, hit frequency, size of winnings and size of jackpot) and bet characteristics of a game (i.e., range of betting options and availability of advanced betting options) served as the independent variables. Control variables were age and gender. Two separate cross-classified multilevel random intercepts models were used to analyze the relationship between bets made, reward characteristics and bet characteristics, where the number of bets was nested within both individuals and within games. The results show that the number of bets is positively associated with payback percentage, hit frequency, being female and age, and negatively associated with size of wins and range of available betting options. In summary, the results show that the reward characteristics and betting options explained 27 % and 15 % of the variance in the number of bets made, respectively. It is concluded that structural game characteristics affect gambling behavior. Implications of responsible gambling are discussed

Model-driven user interfaces for bioinformatics data resources: regenerating the wheel as an alternative to reinventing it
BACKGROUND: The proliferation of data repositories in bioinformatics has resulted in the development of numerous interfaces that allow scientists to browse, search and analyse the data that they contain. Interfaces typically support repository access by means of web pages, but other means are also used, such as desktop applications and command line tools. Interfaces often duplicate functionality amongst each other, and this implies that associated development activities are repeated in different laboratories. Interfaces developed by public laboratories are often created with limited developer resources. In such environments, reducing the time spent on creating user interfaces allows for a better deployment of resources for specialised tasks, such as data integration or analysis. Laboratories maintaining data resources are challenged to reconcile requirements for software that is reliable, functional and flexible with limitations on software development resources. RESULTS: This paper proposes a model-driven approach for the partial generation of user interfaces for searching and browsing bioinformatics data repositories. Inspired by the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) of the Object Management Group (OMG), we have developed a system that generates interfaces designed for use with bioinformatics resources. This approach helps laboratory domain experts decrease the amount of time they have to spend dealing with the repetitive aspects of user interface development. As a result, the amount of time they can spend on gathering requirements and helping develop specialised features increases. The resulting system is known as Pierre, and has been validated through its application to use cases in the life sciences, including the PEDRoDB proteomics database and the e-Fungi data warehouse. CONCLUSION: MDAs focus on generating software from models that describe aspects of service capabilities, and can be applied to support rapid development of repository interfaces in bioinformatics. The Pierre MDA is capable of supporting common database access requirements with a variety of auto-generated interfaces and across a variety of repositories. With Pierre, four kinds of interfaces are generated: web, stand-alone application, text-menu, and command line. The kinds of repositories with which Pierre interfaces have been used are relational, XML and object databases
First Detection of HCO Absorption in the Magellanic System
We present the first detection of HCO absorption in the Magellanic
System. Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we observed 9
extragalactic radio continuum sources behind the Magellanic System and detected
HCO absorption towards one source located behind the leading edge of the
Magellanic Bridge. The detection is located at LSR velocity of , with a full width at half maximum of and optical depth of .
Although there is abundant neutral hydrogen (HI) surrounding the sightline in
position-velocity space, at the exact location of the absorber the HI column
density is low, , and there is little evidence for dust
or CO emission from Planck observations. While the origin and survival of
molecules in such a diffuse environment remains unclear, dynamical events such
as HI flows and cloud collisions in this interacting system likely play an

CpG-island fragments from the HNRPA2B1/CBX3 genomic locus reduce silencing and enhance transgene expression from the hCMV promoter/enhancer in mammalian cells
BACKGROUND: The hCMV promoter is very commonly used for high level expression of transgenes in mammalian cells, but its utility is hindered by transcriptional silencing. Large genomic fragments incorporating the CpG island region of the HNRPA2B1 locus are resistant to transcriptional silencing. RESULTS: In this report we describe studies on the use of a novel series of vectors combining the HNRPA2B1 CpG island with the hCMV promoter for expression of transgenes in CHO-K1 cells. We show that the CpG island gives at least twenty-fold increases in the levels of EGFP and EPO observed in pools of transfectants, and that transgene expression levels remain high in such pools for more than 100 generations. These novel vectors also allow facile isolation of clonal CHO-K1 cell lines showing stable, high-level transgene expression. CONCLUSION: Vectors incorporating the hnRPA2B1 CpG island give major benefits in transgene expression from the hCMV promoter, including substantial improvements in the level and stability of expression. The utility of these vectors for the improved production of recombinant proteins in CHO cells has been demonstrated
Torus-Fibered Calabi-Yau Threefolds with Non-Trivial Fundamental Group
We construct smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds Z, torus-fibered over a dP_9 base,
with fundamental group Z_2 X Z_2. To do this, the structure of rational
elliptic surfaces is studied and it is shown that a restricted subset of such
surfaces admit at least a Z_2 X Z_2 group of automorphisms. One then constructs
Calabi-Yau threefolds X as the fiber product of two such dP_9 surfaces,
demonstrating that the involutions on the surfaces lift to a freely acting Z_2
X Z_2 group of automorphisms on X. The threefolds Z are then obtained as the
quotient Z=X/(Z_2 X Z_2). These Calabi-Yau spaces Z admit stable, holomorphic
SU(4) vector bundles which, in conjunction with Z_2 X Z_2 Wilson lines, lead to
standard-like models of particle physics with naturally suppressed nucleon
