Scattering and delay time for 1D asymmetric potentials: the step-linear and the step-exponential cases
We analyze the quantum-mechanical behavior of a system described by a
one-dimensional asymmetric potential constituted by a step plus (i) a linear
barrier or (ii) an exponential barrier. We solve the energy eigenvalue equation
by means of the integral representation method, classifying the independent
solutions as equivalence classes of homotopic paths in the complex plane.
We discuss the structure of the bound states as function of the height U_0 of
the step and we study the propagation of a sharp-peaked wave packet reflected
by the barrier. For both the linear and the exponential barrier we provide an
explicit formula for the delay time \tau(E) as a function of the peak energy E.
We display the resonant behavior of \tau(E) at energies close to U_0. By
analyzing the asymptotic behavior for large energies of the eigenfunctions of
the continuous spectrum we also show that, as expected, \tau(E) approaches the
classical value for E -> \infty, thus diverging for the step-linear case and
vanishing for the step-exponential one.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
Experimental observations on the influence of hydrogen atoms diffusion on laminar and turbulent premixed burning velocities
Measurements of the laminar and turbulent burning velocity of premixed hydrogen–air, n-hexane–air and n-octane–air flames were made and compared to corresponding measurements of deuterium–air, n-hexane-d14–air and n-octane-d18–air flames performed at identical initial conditions. Experiments were conducted in a constant volume, optically accessed vessel, at elevated initial pressure and temperature of 0.5 MPa and 360 K, for a range of equivalence ratios. Burn rate data was determined via schlieren imaging of flames. It was found that the isotope effect accounted for an average reduction of 20% in the laminar burn rate of alkanes. Similarly, deuterium was measured to burn around 30% slower than hydrogen at the range of equivalence ratios explored. The isotope effect on burn rate was significantly reduced under turbulence. The difference between the turbulent burn rates of the deuterated alkanes and their normal alkane counterparts were measured to be approximately 10%. The difference between the turbulent burn rates of deuterium and hydrogen was even smaller. Nonetheless, the laminar burn rate ranking was maintained under turbulence for all fuels and conditions explored, thus suggesting a degree of influence of radical transport and chemistry under turbulent burning
Uniformly accelerating black holes in a de Sitter universe
A class of exact solutions of Einstein's equations is analysed which
describes uniformly accelerating charged black holes in an asymptotically de
Sitter universe. This is a generalisation of the C-metric which includes a
cosmological constant. The physical interpretation of the solutions is
facilitated by the introduction of a new coordinate system for de Sitter space
which is adapted to accelerating observers in this background. The solutions
considered reduce to this form of the de Sitter metric when the mass and charge

Horizontal and vertical movements of starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias in the northeast Atlantic
Commercial landings of starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias in northern European seas are increasing, whilst our knowledge of their ecology, behaviour and population structure remains limited. M. asterias is a widely distributed demersal shark, occupying the waters of the southern North Sea and Irish Sea in the north, to at least the southern Bay of Biscay in the south, and is seasonally abundant in UK waters. There are no species-specific management measures for the northeast Atlantic stock, and the complexity of its population structure is not yet fully understood. To address this issue, we deployed both mark-recapture and electronic tags on M. asterias to gain novel insights into its horizontal and vertical movements. Our data suggest that the habitat use of M. asterias changes on a seasonal basis, with associated changes in geographical distribution, depth utilisation and experienced temperature. We report the first direct evidence of philopatry for this species, and also provide initial evidence of sex-biased dispersal and potential metapopulation-like stock structuring either side of the UK continental shelf. Investigations of finer-scale vertical movements revealed clear diel variation in vertical activity. The illustrated patterns of seasonal space-use and behaviour will provide important information to support the stock assessment process and will help inform any future management options
Multidecadal variability of potential temperature, salinity, and transport in the eastern subpolar North Atlantic
The Extended Ellett Line (EEL) hydrographic section extends from Scotland to Iceland crossing the Rockall Trough, Hatton-Rockall Basin and Iceland Basin. With 61 full-depth stations at a horizontal resolution of 10 to 50 km, the EEL samples the upper limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation flowing across the Iceland-Scotland Ridge into the Nordic Seas. The Rockall Trough has been sampled nearly four times per year from 1975 to 1996, and the full section annually since 1996. The EEL is an exceptionally long timeseries of deep-ocean temperatures and salinities. This study extends prior work in the Rockall Trough, and examines for the first time 18 year records in the Iceland and Hatton-Rockall Basins. We quantify errors in the timeseries from two sources: observational errors and aliasing. The data quality and annual sampling are suitable for observing interannual to decadal variability because the variability exceeds our error estimates. The upper waters of all 3 basins are cooler/fresher from 1997 to 2001, warmer/more saline 2001 to 2006, and cooler/fresher from 2006 to 2014. A reference level for geostrophic shear is developed heuristically and by comparison with sea-surface altimetry. The mean northward transport in the upper waters is 6.7±3.7 Sv and there is a 6.1±2.5 Sv southward flow below the thermocline. Although the magnitude of the Iceland Basin overturning circulation (4.3±1.9 Sv) is greater than in the Rockall Trough (3.0±3.7 Sv), the variability is greater in the Rockall Trough.
