    China-Japan Relations

    Given the vast amount of Chinese and international scholarship on China–Japan relations, this chapter focuses only on the major areas of study, and the key debates. The chapter begins by considering Chinese academic works on Sino-Japanese relations (mainly in the field of IR), followed by an overview of the key international scholarship which encompasses such areas as diplomatic history, economic relations, traditional and non-traditional security issues, and social/cultural relations. It then presents two case studies: the so-called ‘History Issue’, which continues to attract much academic attention, not least because of ongoing debates about interpretations of the past; and the Diaoyu/Senkaku issue which has escalated since 2010 and continues to be a source of tension between the two sides. Throughout, we take note of the recurring themes in the scholarship, which largely revolve around two key topics: the binary of competition versus cooperation; and the history problem. The chapter concludes with a brief consideration of recent and emerging scholarship on China–Japan relations

    Covalent Modification of Synthetic Hydrogels with Bioactive Proteins via Sortase-Mediated Ligation

    Synthetic extracellular matrices are widely used in regenerative medicine and as tools in building in vitro physiological culture models. Synthetic hydrogels display advantageous physical properties, but are challenging to modify with large peptides or proteins. Here, a facile, mild enzymatic postgrafting approach is presented. Sortase-mediated ligation was used to conjugate human epidermal growth factor fused to a GGG ligation motif (GGG-EGF) to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels containing the sortase LPRTG substrate. The reversibility of the sortase reaction was then exploited to cleave tethered EGF from the hydrogels for analysis. Analyses of the reaction supernatant and the postligation hydrogels showed that the amount of tethered EGF increases with increasing LPRTG in the hydrogel or GGG-EGF in the supernatant. Sortase-tethered EGF was biologically active, as demonstrated by stimulation of DNA synthesis in primary human hepatocytes and endometrial epithelial cells.     Developing Digital Tools for Remote Clinical Research:How to Evaluate the Validity and Practicality of Active Assessments in Field Settings

    The ability of remote research tools to collect granular, high-frequency data on symptoms and digital biomarkers is an important strength because it circumvents many limitations of traditional clinical trials and improves the ability to capture clinically relevant data. This approach allows researchers to capture more robust baselines and derive novel phenotypes for improved precision in diagnosis and accuracy in outcomes. The process for developing these tools however is complex because data need to be collected at a frequency that is meaningful but not burdensome for the participant or patient. Furthermore, traditional techniques, which rely on fixed conditions to validate assessments, may be inappropriate for validating tools that are designed to capture data under flexible conditions. This paper discusses the process for determining whether a digital assessment is suitable for remote research and offers suggestions on how to validate these novel tools

    A Study of the Diverse T Dwarf Population Revealed by WISE

    We report the discovery of 87 new T dwarfs uncovered with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and three brown dwarfs with extremely red near-infrared colors that exhibit characteristics of both L and T dwarfs. Two of the new T dwarfs are likely binaries with L7+/-1 primaries and mid-type T secondaries. In addition, our follow-up program has confirmed 10 previously identified T dwarfs and four photometrically-selected L and T dwarf candidates in the literature. This sample, along with the previous WISE discoveries, triples the number of known brown dwarfs with spectral types later than T5. Using the WISE All-Sky Source Catalog we present updated color-color and color-type diagrams for all the WISE-discovered T and Y dwarfs. Near-infrared spectra of the new discoveries are presented, along with spectral classifications. To accommodate later T dwarfs we have modified the integrated flux method of determining spectral indices to instead use the median flux. Furthermore, a newly defined J-narrow index differentiates the early-type Y dwarfs from late-type T dwarfs based on the J-band continuum slope. The K/J indices for this expanded sample show that 32% of late-type T dwarfs have suppressed K-band flux and are blue relative to the spectral standards, while only 11% are redder than the standards. Comparison of the Y/J and K/J index to models suggests diverse atmospheric conditions and supports the possible re-emergence of clouds after the L/T transition. We also discuss peculiar brown dwarfs and candidates that were found not to be substellar, including two Young Stellar Objects and two Active Galactic Nuclei. The coolest WISE-discovered brown dwarfs are the closest of their type and will remain the only sample of their kind for many years to come.Comment: Accepted to ApJS on 15 January 2013; 99 pages in preprint format, 30 figures, 12 table

    Bastin et al (Reports, 12 May 2017, p. 635) infer forest as more globally extensive than previously estimated using tree cover data. However, their forest definition does not reflect ecosystem function or biotic composition. These structural and climatic definitions inflate forest estimates across the tropics and undermine conservation goals, leading to inappropriate management policies and practices in tropical grassy ecosystems

    Prediction of Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole Resistance in Community-Onset Urinary Tract Infections

    OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to predict trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT) resistance in patients with community-onset urinary tract infection (UTI) due to Enterobacteriaceae based on patient-specific risk factors. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study in Prisma Health facilities in central South Carolina, USA, including three community hospitals, affiliated emergency departments and ambulatory clinics, including adult patients with community-onset UTI due to Enterobacteriaceae (1 April 2015 to 29 February 2016). Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine risk factors for SXT resistance. RESULTS: Among 351 unique patients with community-onset UTI, 71 (20.2%) had SXT-resistant Enterobacteriaceae urinary isolates. Overall, median age was 64 years and 252 (71.8%) were female.
