K3, work in progress, is an acronym for Kollaboration (collaboration), Kommunikation (communication), and Kompetenz (competence). K3 provides a platform in the context of knowledge management to support collaborative knowledge production in learning environments. The underlying hypothesis states that collaborative discourse conciliates information as well as communication competence in learning contexts. The collaborative, communicative paradigm of K3 is implemented by asynchronous communication tools as a means of constructivist learning methodology. In this paper we will describe a K3 course. The lecture was organized and carried out at two places in two different countries (Germany and Switzerland) with students from different universities in the context of Library and Information Science. The paper informs about the management of the lecture and about the problems we had to run the lecture at two places. The circumstances in coordinating the presentations, the exercises, the examinations and evaluation, and the time schedule are presented. The conclusions of the lecturers and the results of a questionnaire for the students are explained in detail

Everyday information literacy in rural areas

Information literate behaviour can be understood as an approach to handle the increasingly digitalised information environment. Rural areas and particularly the local authorities face specific challenges realising the digital transformation of decentralized countries. This research investigates individual information needs and behaviour patterns of residents in a rural district in Germany. The aim is to deliver insights concerning the question as to how information provision (supplier perspective) and information literacy (citizen perspective) can be fostered for rural inhabitants. This holistic perspective allows for context-specific recommendations at the end of the three-year project. Data were collected through a user study, expert interviews with information providers as well as an analysis of the websites maintained by the local authorities. The study shows that for residents evaluating information and information sources are the main issues. The analysis of the municipality’s websites indicates difficulties providing target group specific information. The expert interviews reveal a low level of digital maturity on behalf of the local governmental information provision, mainly caused by a lack of resources. Besides finding approaches to foster individual information literacy in the future, the information quality model developed for the analysis may already be used as a reference to improve the information provision of local governments.Peer Reviewe

Was bedeutet 11.882 Bearbeitungen?

What does high edit count mean and which aspects are important when analyzing the evolution of Wikipedia articles? This paper discusses methods and approaches to investigate relations between the evolution of Wikipedia articles and their quality. Results of a first exploratory analysis which focuses on a qualitative in-depth categorization of an article's history are presented

[EN] This paper describes results from a student-made MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on E-Learning. The main focus of interest lies on two aspects. Firstly, to explore the potential of using the process of creating a MOOC as a teaching method and secondly, to get insights into the affordances and outcomes linked to a cooperation with a knowledge-based company during the course of events of the MOOC. Both concepts aim for an improvement of quality in higher education by combining the concept of “learning by doing” with the initiation of communication between students and professionalsin the field. On the one hand, the data showsthat employing the task of building a MOOC as a teaching method is a very worthwhile didactic approach to initiate a complex and authentic learning scenario. On the other hand, the outcome indicatesthat the realized level of participation is expandableGriesbaum, J.; Görtz, M. (2015). MOOCs as a tool to connect higher education and professional experience? Special requirements for comparative evaluation of web search engines

ABSTRACT: Performance evaluation of classical information retrieval systems usually aims to assess the ability of these systems to find documents considered relevant to a certain search query based on a specific evaluation criteria. This approach, however, is not suitable to adequately evaluate some information retrieval applications such as web search engines. The web special characteristics make information retrieval tasks and the evaluation of search engines on the web face multiple challenges. Different web-specific, user-specific and language-specific requirements should be considered when designing and performing evaluation tests on operational web search engines. This paper discusses the special requirements for comprehensive comparative evaluation of different web search engines and highlights some languagespecific considerations for evaluation in Arabic language

What Is Information Literacy and How to Improve It?

Information literacy is a controversially discussed topic with heterogeneous definitions. In the context of a project on “Information Literacy and Democracy” in Germany, 21 experts from diverse scientific backgrounds submitted position papers in which the authors provided their perspectives on the following ques tions: What is information literacy? How to foster information literacy? What are the central developments in the field of information literacy? What other aspects are relevant? Based on document analysis, this contribution unites the core mes- sages of the 19 position papers for an international audience. Such a combined view of 21 experts from diverse scientific backgrounds is rather scarce. By merging the views of many experts and transcending disciplinary borders, this paper hopes to make a small contribution to stimulate multidisciplinary discussions on information literacy and corresponding approaches to improve it

Teaching Internationally, Learning Collaboratively: Intercultural Perspectives on Information Literacy and Metaliteracy (IPILM)

    Get PDF
Intercultural Perspectives on Information Literacy and Metaliteracy (IPILM) is a discourse- oriented learning environment that engages students from diverse cultural backgrounds to participate in collaborative knowledge construction. The objective is to evolve a thematic approach to course design that includes elements of open pedagogy, information literacy, and metaliteracy. IPILM invites participation from educators and learners from around the world and has witnessed an increase in participating countries. This paper describes the concept of IPILM and demonstrates the implementation of this approach in practice. The initiative was well received by students and is both feasible and sustainable as an intercultural learning endeavor. IPILM is an ongoing project and a work in progress that is an adaptable model which may be transferred to disparate fields of teaching and learning or adopted by international communities of instructors
