Essays on consumer search
This thesis consists of three essays on different topics within the field of consumer search. The first essay proposes and solves a model for how consumers decide between discovering more products and searching among alternatives they are already aware of. The second essay builds on this model and quantifies the effects of different product rankings on consumer surplus and an online search intermediary’s revenues. The third and final essay proposes and solves a model for how consumers allocate time to searching across different product categories
Optimal Search and Discovery
This paper studies a search problem where a consumer is initially aware of
only a few products. At every point in time, the consumer then decides between
searching among alternatives he is already aware of and discovering more
products. I show that the optimal policy for this search and discovery problem
is fully characterized by tractable reservation values. Moreover, I prove that
a predetermined index fully specifies the purchase decision of a consumer
following the optimal search policy. Finally, a comparison highlights
differences to classical random and directed search.Comment: 48 pages, 2 figures, 3 table
Die schweizerische Entwicklungszusammenarbeit im internationalen Vergleich
Natu..
A multiplex-system to target 16 male-specific and 15 autosomal genetic markers for orang-utans (genus: Pongo )
Genetic studies of dispersal on local spatial and short temporal scales require a large number of autosomal microsatellites. However, the study of dispersal over large spatial scales and the resolution of deep evolutionary histories require marker systems that are preferentially inherited through the male or female line. Addressing such questions in endangered orang-utans (genus: Pongo) bears significant relevance to species conservation, as habitat destruction and fragmentation pose a significant threat to the whole genus. Here, we report 16 male-specific markers (nine human-derived microsatellites, six single nucleotide and one insertion-deletion polymorphisms), and 15 novel Pongo-derived autosomal microsatellite loci. All 31 markers can be amplified in four multiplex polymerase chain reactions even in DNA derived from faecal material. The markers can be applied to studying a wide range of important questions in this genus, such as conservation genetics, social structure, phylogeny and phylogeograph

a vizsgálati személyek egyszerû reakcióidõ feladatot
hajtottak végre (’ongoing feladat’). Az ún. elvárt helyzetben a vizsgálati személyek az alaphelyzettel megegyezõ ’ongoing feladat’ végzése közben várták a PM
ingereket, amelyek azonban a teljes feladatszakasz során
sem jelentkeztek. A harmadik, ún. prospektív helyzet
prospektív helyzetben is szignifikánsan lassúbbak voltak,
mint az egészséges kontrollcsoport. A betegcsoportnak
A szkizofréniával diagnosztizált csoporton belül a
Learning to See Forces: Surgical Force Prediction with RGB-Point Cloud Temporal Convolutional Networks
Robotic surgery has been proven to offer clear advantages during surgical
procedures, however, one of the major limitations is obtaining haptic feedback.
Since it is often challenging to devise a hardware solution with accurate force
feedback, we propose the use of "visual cues" to infer forces from tissue
deformation. Endoscopic video is a passive sensor that is freely available, in
the sense that any minimally-invasive procedure already utilizes it. To this
end, we employ deep learning to infer forces from video as an attractive
low-cost and accurate alternative to typically complex and expensive hardware
solutions. First, we demonstrate our approach in a phantom setting using the da
Vinci Surgical System affixed with an OptoForce sensor. Second, we then
validate our method on an ex vivo liver organ. Our method results in a mean
absolute error of 0.814 N in the ex vivo study, suggesting that it may be a
promising alternative to hardware based surgical force feedback in endoscopic
procedures.Comment: MICCAI 2018 workshop, CARE(Computer Assisted and Robotic Endoscopy
Double Dissociation of Explicit and Implicit Learning Performances in Neurocognitive Subgroups of Schizophrenia
INTRODUCTION Mapping cognitive functions in schizophrenia is important for approaching the
etiological background of the disease.\ud
OBJECTIVES To examine the explicit and the implicit learning processes with experimental
psychological methods in neurocognitive subgroups identified by us earlier (Szendi et al, 2010).
AIMS: To find substantial cognitive differences between the neurocognitive subgroups
METHODS Patients with schizophrenia (n=19) and matched healthy control persons (n=11)
participated in the study. The patients were recruited randomly from the patient pool which constitued
the subject base for the original clustering process, we enrolled n=9 patients from the cluster S, and
n=10 from the cluster Z. Besides the comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment, the explicit learning
performances were tested by a verbal learning task, while the implicit learning by the Alternating Serial
Reaction Time Task.
RESULTS While the whole group of patients did not differ from the healthy persons regarding either
the explicit or the implicit memory tasks, the performances of the two subgroups of patients showed a
double dissociation in these tasks. Whereas patients belonging to cluster S could recall significantly less
words in the explicit cued recall test after the word-list learning than patients in cluster Z (and the
healthy persons), the performance of patients in cluster Z in the implicit sequence-specific learning fell
behind the cluster S (and the healthy group).
CONCLUSIONS The double dissociation of explicit and implicit memory's impairments suggests that
the neurocognitive background of the two subgroups of schizophrenia (S vs Z) might substantially differ
from each other
