    Factors Related to the Likelihood of Hiring a Health Advocate

    This study was designed to explore factors related to the likelihood of hiring a health advocate. Independent variables were selected from the health service use model to capture predisposing, enabling, and illness-level factors. Participants were 889 adults (M age = 50.9 years, SD = 17.9 years, 52% female) recruited from a large cultural park in San Diego, California during the spring and summer of 2008. Participants read a description of a health advocate and completed a brief set of questions on age, gender, confidence in health care, effort maintaining health, self-rated health, and the likelihood of hiring a health advocate. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that participants age 40-64 , non-Caucasians , participants who exerted more effort maintaining their health , and participants 65 and older who were less satisfied with their social support reported greater likelihood of hiring a health advocate. Findings were similar to those of studies that applied the health service use model to predict use of other health services, such as medical visits. These findings suggest factors that health care organizations offering health advocacy services could consider when targeting potential clients

    Effective field theory and the quark model

    We analyze the connections between the quark model (QM) and the description of hadrons in the low-momentum limit of heavy-baryon effective field theory in QCD. By using a three-flavor-index representation for the effective baryon fields, we show that the ``nonrelativistic'' constituent QM for baryon masses and moments is completely equivalent through O(m_s) to a parametrization of the relativistic field theory in a general spin--flavor basis. The flavor and spin variables can be identified with those of effective valence quarks. Conversely, the spin-flavor description clarifies the structure and dynamical interpretation of the chiral expansion in effective field theory, and provides a direct connection between the field theory and the semirelativistic models for hadrons used in successful dynamical calculations. This allows dynamical information to be incorporated directly into the chiral expansion. We find, for example, that the striking success of the additive QM for baryon magnetic moments is a consequence of the relative smallness of the non-additive spin-dependent corrections.Comment: 25 pages, revtex, no figure

    Pattern Transfer of Sub-10 nm Features via Tin-Containing Block Copolymers

    Tin-containing block copolymers were investigated as materials for nanolithographic applications. Poly(4-trimethylstannylstyrene-block-styrene) (PSnS-PS) and poly(4-trimethylstannylstyrene-block-4-methoxystyrene) (PSnS-PMOST) synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization form lamellar domains with periodicities ranging from 18 to 34 nm. Thin film orientation control was achieved by thermal annealing between a neutral surface treatment and a top coat. Incorporation of tin into one block facilitates pattern transfer into SiO_2 via a two-step etch process utilizing oxidative and fluorine-based etch chemistries

    Monte Carlo study of the superfluid weight in doped antiferromagnets

    The phase fluctuations of the condensate in doped antiferromagnets, described by a t-t'-J model and a suitable 1/N expansion, provide a mechanism for a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type of transition to a superconducting state below T_{c}. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo study of the corresponding superfluid weight D_{s}(T) in the classical (large-N) limit, as a function of temperature and doping. Consistent with generic experimental trends, D_{s}(T) exhibits a T-linear decrease at low temperatures, with the magnitude of the slope D_{s}'(0) increasing upon doping. Finite-size scaling in the underdoped regime predicts values for the dimensionless ratio A=k_{B}T_{c}/D_{s}(0) of order unity, with A=0.4435(5) in the half-filled-band limit, thus confirming D_{s}(0) as the fundamental energy scale determining T_{c}. Our Monte Carlo results for D_{s}(T)/D_{s}(0) vs k_{B}T/D_{s}(0), at 10% hole doping, are found to be in reasonable agreement with recent measurements on La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}, with x=0.10, throughout the temperature range below the theoretical KT transition temperature T_{c}.Comment: 9 pages, REVTEX file (4 Postscript figures).     Neighborhood environment and metabolic risk in Hispanics/Latinos from the Hispanic community health study/study of Latinos

    Introduction This study examines the associations of neighborhood environments with BMI, HbA1c, and diabetes across 6 years in Hispanic/Latino adults. Methods Participants from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos San Diego site (n=3,851, mean age=39.4 years, 53.3% women, 94.0% Mexican heritage) underwent assessment of metabolic risk factors and diabetes status (categorized as normoglycemia, prediabetes, and diabetes) at baseline (2008–2011) and approximately 6 years later (2014–2017). In the Study of Latinos Community and Surrounding Areas Study ancillary study (2015–2020), participant baseline addresses were geocoded, and neighborhoods were defined using 800-meter circular buffers. Neighborhood variables representing socioeconomic deprivation, residential stability, social disorder, walkability, and greenness were created using Census and other public databases. Analyses were conducted in 2020–2021. Results Complex survey regression analyses revealed that greater neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation was associated with higher BMI (β=0.14, p<0.001) and HbA1c (β=0.08, p<0.01) levels and a higher odds of worse diabetes status (i.e., having prediabetes versus normoglycemia and having diabetes versus prediabetes; OR=1.25, 95% CI=1.06, 1.47) at baseline. Greater baseline neighborhood deprivation also was related to increasing BMI (β=0.05, p<0.01) and worsening diabetes (OR=1.27, 95% CI=1.10, 1.46) statuses, whereas social disorder was related to increasing BMI levels (β=0.05, p<0.05) at Visit 2. There were no associations of expected protective factors of walkability, greenness, or residential stability. Conclusions Neighborhood deprivation and disorder were related to worse metabolic health in San Diego Hispanic/Latino adults of mostly Mexican heritage. Multilevel interventions emphasizing individual and structural determinants may be most effective in improving metabolic health among Hispanic/Latino individuals

    The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: the growth rate of cosmic structure since redshift z=0.9

    We present precise measurements of the growth rate of cosmic structure for the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.9, using redshift-space distortions in the galaxy power spectrum of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. Our results, which have a precision of around 10% in four independent redshift bins, are well-fit by a flat LCDM cosmological model with matter density parameter Omega_m = 0.27. Our analysis hence indicates that this model provides a self-consistent description of the growth of cosmic structure through large-scale perturbations and the homogeneous cosmic expansion mapped by supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations. We achieve robust results by systematically comparing our data with several different models of the quasi-linear growth of structure including empirical models, fitting formulae calibrated to N-body simulations, and perturbation theory techniques. We extract the first measurements of the power spectrum of the velocity divergence field, P_vv(k), as a function of redshift (under the assumption that P_gv(k) = -sqrt[P_gg(k) P_vv(k)] where g is the galaxy overdensity field), and demonstrate that the WiggleZ galaxy-mass cross-correlation is consistent with a deterministic (rather than stochastic) scale-independent bias model for WiggleZ galaxies for scales k < 0.3 h/Mpc. Measurements of the cosmic growth rate from the WiggleZ Survey and other current and future observations offer a powerful test of the physical nature of dark energy that is complementary to distance-redshift measures such as supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication by MNRA

    SNP selection for genes of iron metabolism in a study of genetic modifiers of hemochromatosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We report our experience of selecting tag SNPs in 35 genes involved in iron metabolism in a cohort study seeking to discover genetic modifiers of hereditary hemochromatosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We combined our own and publicly available resequencing data with HapMap to maximise our coverage to select 384 SNPs in candidate genes suitable for typing on the Illumina platform.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Validation/design scores above 0.6 were not strongly correlated with SNP performance as estimated by Gentrain score. We contrasted results from two tag SNP selection algorithms, LDselect and Tagger. Varying r<sup>2 </sup>from 0.5 to 1.0 produced a near linear correlation with the number of tag SNPs required. We examined the pattern of linkage disequilibrium of three levels of resequencing coverage for the transferrin gene and found HapMap phase 1 tag SNPs capture 45% of the ≥ 3% MAF SNPs found in SeattleSNPs where there is nearly complete resequencing. Resequencing can reveal adjacent SNPs (within 60 bp) which may affect assay performance. We report the number of SNPs present within the region of six of our larger candidate genes, for different versions of stock genotyping assays.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A candidate gene approach should seek to maximise coverage, and this can be improved by adding to HapMap data any available sequencing data. Tag SNP software must be fast and flexible to data changes, since tag SNP selection involves iteration as investigators seek to satisfy the competing demands of coverage within and between populations, and typability on the technology platform chosen.</p

    Theoretical Engineering of the Gut Micro biome for the Purpose of Creating Superior Soldiers

    The purpose of this review is to highlight research raising the possibility of exploiting the host-microbiome gut axis for military purposes. Through optimizing the gut-microbiome environment it is possible to enhance nutritional access to indigestible material, provide local and systemic analgesia, enhance psychological robustness to battlefield stress, produce endogenous steroids, reduce muscle fatigue, and promote peripheral wound healing. However, this approach is still in its early stages and thus has not been explored to its full potential. The challenges that are currently preventing the practical use of gut bacteria include the following: inconsistency of clinical outcomes, transient effects requiring continuous supplementation, the type of regimen selected, the initiation and cessation of regimen, and the broader clinical studies needed to validate this research. This review is intended to shed light on the numerous and varied positive impacts such an approach could have for the military if further developed
