    The United States confronts Ebola: Suasion, executive action, and fragmentation

First, the US provided a case study in the role of suasion and executive action in the management of public health in a fragmented multi-level system. The variable capacity of different parts of the US to respond to Ebola on the level of hospitals or state governments, and their different approaches, show the limitations of federal influence, the importance of knowledge and executive energy, and the diversity of both powerful actors and sources of power. Second, the politics of Ebola in the US is a case study in the politics of partisan blame attribution. The outbreak struck in the run-up to an election that was likely to be good for the Republican party, and the election dominated interest in and opinions of Ebola in both the media and public opinion. Democratic voters and media downplayed Ebola while Republican voters and media focused on the outbreak. The media was a key conduit for this strategic politicization, as shown in the quantity, timing, and framing of news about Ebola.     Solution to the problem of the poor cyclic fatigue resistance of bulk metallic glasses

    The recent development of metallic glass-matrix composites represents a particular milestone in engineering materials for structural applications owing to their remarkable combination of strength and toughness. However, metallic glasses are highly susceptible to cyclic fatigue damage, and previous attempts to solve this problem have been largely disappointing. Here, we propose and demonstrate a microstructural design strategy to overcome this limitation by matching the microstructural length scales (of the second phase) to mechanical crack-length scales. Specifically, semisolid processing is used to optimize the volume fraction, morphology, and size of second-phase dendrites to confine any initial deformation (shear banding) to the glassy regions separating dendrite arms having length scales of ≈2 μm, i.e., to less than the critical crack size for failure. Confinement of the damage to such interdendritic regions results in enhancement of fatigue lifetimes and increases the fatigue limit by an order of magnitude, making these “designed” composites as resistant to fatigue damage as high-strength steels and aluminum alloys.     Oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, thrombophilias and risk of venous thromboembolism: a systematic review The Thrombosis: Risk and Economic Assessment of Thrombophilia Screening (TREATS) Study

    Combined oral contraceptives,oral hormone replacement therapy and thrombophilias are recognised risk factors for venous thromboembolism in women.The objective of this study was to assess the risk of thromboembolism among women with thrombophilia who are taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, conducting a systematic review and metaanalysis. Of 201 studies identified, only nine met the inclusion criteria. Seven studies included pre-menopausal women on oral contraceptives and two studies included peri-menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy. For oral contraceptive use, significant associations of the risk of venous thromboembolism were found in women with factor V Leiden (OR 15.62; 95%CI 8.66 to 28.15); deficiencies of antithrombin (OR 12.60; 95%CI 1.37 to 115.79), protein C (OR 6.33; 95%CI 1.68 to 23.87), or protein S (OR 4.88; 95%CI 1.39 to 17.10), elevated levels of factor VIIIc (OR 8.80; 95%CI 4.13 to 18.75); and factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A (OR 7.85; 95%CI 1.65 to 37.41). For hormone replacement therapy, a significant association was found in women with factor V Leiden (OR 13.16; 95%CI 4.28 to 40.47).Although limited by the small number of studies, the findings of this study support the presence of interaction between thrombophilia and venous thromboembolism among women taking oral contraceptives. However, further studies are required to establish with greater confidence the associations of these, and other, thrombophilias with venous thromboembolism among hormone users

    NAMA Members\u27 Perceptions of Corporate Social Responsibility

    As corporate social responsibility becomes increasingly important within organizations, it is imperative that professionals define their role in setting the CSR agenda. Through a descriptive survey, this study investigated National Agri-Marketing Association members’ perceptions of their roles in CSR and acceptable practices for releasing data about an organization. Respondents were neutral that the agricultural communications industry has a clear code of ethics and standards of performance. NAMA members agreed that developing programs that are good for society is both good for business and good citizenship, and that public relations professionals should be deeply involved in helping management define an organization’s social role. A majority of respondents reported working for an organization that recruited and hired employees who had an agricultural communications major, and had worked with someone who had an agricultural communications major, but were unsure of their preparation, management skills, and strategic thinking skills. Agricultural communications programs should take this perception into account and incorporate these three issues into their curriculum. No research was found that discussed CSR and public relations in the agriculture industry. With this study, agricultural public relations practitioners might see their role in CSR and the need for a clear code of ethics to unify the industry. This study creates a foundation for additional studies of agricultural public relations professionals, delving deeper into more specific roles related to CSR

    Chrysler Leverages Its Suppliers\u27 Improvement Suggestions

    We examined Chrysler\u27s SCORE (supplier cost reduction effort) supplier-suggestion process from the perspectives of Chrysler and its suppliers. Chrysler used SCORE to save over $2 billion and to build collaborative relationships with its suppliers. In our study, we observed four elements in Chrysler and its suppliers\u27 organizations that contributed to SCORE\u27S success: (1) designating a process champion, (2) engaging suppliers in the process, (3) motivating em ployees, and (4) facilitating evaluation and implementation. Companies designing a supplier suggestion process should consider ways to reduce delays during evaluation, to minimize the number of low value suggestions, and to involve the entire supply chain

    Modeling Pitch Trajectories in Fastpitch Softball

    The fourth-order Runge–Kutta method is used to numerically integrate the equations of motion for a fastpitch softball pitch and to create a model from which the trajectories of drop balls, rise balls and curve balls can be computed and displayed. By requiring these pitches to pass through the strike zone, and by assuming specific values for the initial speed, launch angle and height of each pitch, an upper limit on the lift coefficient can be predicted which agrees with experimental data. This approach also predicts the launch angles necessary to put rise balls, drop balls and curve balls in the strike zone, as well as a value of the drag coefficient that agrees with experimental data. Finally, Adair’s analysis of a batter’s swing is used to compare pitches that look similar to a batter starting her swing, yet which diverge before reaching the home plate, to predict when she is likely to miss or foul the ball

    Policy changes in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) can be explained in terms of the exhaustion and long-term contradictions of policy instruments. Changes in policy instruments have reoriented the policy without any change in formal Treaty goals. The social and economic efficacy of instruments in terms of evidence-based policy analysis was a key factor in whether they were delegitimized. The original policy instruments were generally dysfunctional, but reframing the policy in terms of a multifunctionality paradigm permitted the development of more efficacious instruments. A dynamic interaction takes place between the instruments and policy informed by the predominant discourses

    Nonsense suppressors derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae tRNATrp genes have not been identified by classical genetic screens, although one can construct efficient amber (am) suppressors from them by making the appropriate anticodon mutation in vitro. Herein, a series of in vitro constructed putative suppressor genes was produced to test if pre-tRNATrp processing difficulties could help to explain the lack of classical tRNATrp-based suppressors. It is clear that inefficient processing of in-trons from precursor tRNATrp, or inaccurate overall processing, may explain why some of these constructs fail to promote nonsense suppression in vivo. However, deficient processing must be only one of the reasons why classical tRNATrp-based suppressors have not been characterized, as suppres-sion may still be extremely weak or absent in instances where the in vitro construct can lead to an accumulation of mature tRNATrp. Furthermore, suppression is also very weak in strains transformed with an intronless derivative of a putative tRNATrp ochre (oc) suppressor gene, wherein intron removal cannot pose a problem
