Spin diffusion of correlated two-spin states in a dielectric crystal
Reciprocal space measurements of spin diffusion in a single crystal of
calcium fluoride (CaF) have been extended to dipolar ordered states. The
experimental results for the component of the spin diffusion parallel with the
external field are cm/s for the
[001] direction and cm/s for the
[111] direction. The diffusion rates for dipolar order are significantly faster
than those for Zeeman order and are considerably faster than predicted by
simple theoretical models. It is suggested that constructive interference in
the transport of the two spin state is responsible for this enhancement. As
expected the anisotropy in the diffusion rates is observed to be significantly

Suspension and Measurement of Graphene and Bi2Se3 Atomic Membranes
Coupling high quality, suspended atomic membranes to specialized electrodes
enables investigation of many novel phenomena, such as spin or Cooper pair
transport in these two dimensional systems. However, many electrode materials
are not stable in acids that are used to dissolve underlying substrates. Here
we present a versatile and powerful multi-level lithographical technique to
suspend atomic membranes, which can be applied to the vast majority of
substrate, membrane and electrode materials. Using this technique, we
fabricated suspended graphene devices with Al electrodes and mobility of 5500
cm^2/Vs. We also demonstrate, for the first time, fabrication and measurement
of a free-standing thin Bi2Se3 membrane, which has low contact resistance to
electrodes and a mobility of >~500 cm^2/Vs
Rapid methods of landslide hazard mapping : Fiji case study
A landslide hazard probability map can help planners (1) prepare for, and/or mitigate against,
the effects of landsliding on communities and infrastructure, and (2) avoid or minimise the
risks associated with new developments. The aims of the project were to establish, by means
of studies in a few test areas, a generic method by which remote sensing and data analysis
using a geographic information system (GIS) could provide a provisional landslide hazard
zonation map. The provision of basic hazard information is an underpinning theme of the
UN’s International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). It is an essential
requirement for disaster preparedness and mitigation planning. This report forms part of BGS
project 92/7 (R5554) ‘Rapid assessment of landslip hazards’ Carried out under the ODA/BGS
Technology Development and Research Programme as part of the British Government’s
provision of aid to developing countries. It provides a detailed technical account of work
undertaken in a test area in Viti Levu in collaboration with Fiji Mineral Resources
Department. The study represents a demonstration of a methodology that is applicable to
many developing countries.
The underlying principle is that relationships between past landsliding events, interpreted
from remote sensing, and factors such as the geology, relief, soils etc provide the basis for
modelling where future landslides are most likely to occur. This is achieved using a GIS by
‘weighting’ each class of each variable (e.g. each lithology ‘class’ of the variable ‘geology’)
according to the proportion of landslides occurring within it compared to the regional
average. Combinations of variables, produced by summing the weights in individual classes,
provide ‘models’ of landslide probability. The approach is empirical but has the advantage
of potentially being able to provide regional scale hazard maps over large areas quickly and
cheaply; this is unlikely to be achieved using conventional ground-based geotechnical
methods.
In Fiji, landslides are usually triggered by intense rain storms commonly associated with
tropical cyclones. However, the regional distribution of landslides has not been mapped nor
is it known how far geology and landscape influence the location and severity of landsliding
events. The report discusses the remote sensing and GIS methodology, and describes the
results of the pilot study over an area of 713 km2 in south east Viti Levu. The landslide
model uses geology, elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, soil type, and forest cover as
inputs. The resulting provisional landslide hazard zonation map, divided into high, medium
and low zones of landslide hazard probability, suggests that whilst rainfall is the immediate
cause, others controls do exert a significant influence. It is recommended that consideration
be given in Fiji to implementing the techniques as part of a national strategic plan for
landslide hazard zonation mapping
Fiabot!: design and evaluation of a mobile storytelling application for schools
This paper contributes to the ongoing debate about how digital technology can be integrated into the formal education system. Within a longitudinal research study, which lasted four years, we conducted an investigation on how mobile technology can support educational activities as defined by a school curriculum. Among the topics included in the school curriculum, we focused on the literary field and developed a Digital StoryTelling (DST) application, Fiabot!, to support this activity. Here, we describe the design of the application and how we evaluated its impact on educational activities. The application was designed and evaluated in two primary schools. The study had the objectives of exploring whether Fiabot! supports children in achieving educational objectives defined by the curriculum, how this effectively supports teachers, and to what extent children like using it for the creation and sharing of their stories. Our findings show that the application has a positive impact on curriculum enactment and effectively supports the related educational activities. Overall, Fiabot! wasdemonstrated to be very effective in stimulating children's discussion of a story's plot and characters. Thus, Fiabot! supported children not only in being creative but also in organizing their work and exploring a digital media opportunity. This resulted in the development of new skills and the better grounding of previously acquired knowledge, while teachers also had the opportunity to expand their teaching skills and get a taste of ICT's potential in education
Multi-membership gene regulation in pathway based microarray analysis

Recently, there has been elevated interest in the integration of microarray data analysis with other types of biological knowledge in a holistic analytical approach. We propose a methodology that can be facilitated for pathway based microarray data analysis, based on the observation that a substantial proportion of genes present in biochemical pathway databases are members of a number of distinct pathways. Our methodology aims towards establishing the state of individual pathways, by identifying those truly affected by the experimental conditions based on the behaviour of such genes. For that purpose it considers all the pathways in which a gene participates and the general census of gene expression per pathway. Results: We utilise hill climbing, simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm to analyse the consistency of the produced results, through the application of fuzzy adjusted rand indexes and hamming distance. All algorithms produce highly consistent genes to pathways allocations, revealing the contribution of genes to pathway functionality, in agreement with current pathway state visualisation techniques, with the simulated annealing search proving slightly superior in terms of efficiency. Conclusions: We show that the expression values of genes, which are members of a number of biochemical pathways or modules, are the net effect of the contribution of each gene to these biochemical processes. We show that by manipulating the pathway and module contribution of such genes to follow underlying trends we can interpret microarray results centred on the behaviour of these genes.The work was sponsored by the studentship scheme of the School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics, Brunel Universit
Two independent methods for mapping the grounding line of an outlet glacier - an example from the Astrolabe Glacier, Terre Adélie, Antarctica
The grounding line is a key element of coastal outlet glaciers, acting on their dynamics. Accurately knowing its position is fundamental for both modelling the glacier dynamics and establishing a benchmark for later change detection. Here we map the grounding line of the Astrolabe Glacier in East Antarctica (66°41' S, 140°05' E), using both hydrostatic and tidal methods. The first method is based on new surface and ice thickness data from which the line of buoyant floatation is found. The second method uses kinematic GPS measurements of the tidal response of the ice surface. By detecting the transitions where the ice starts to move vertically in response to the tidal forcing we determine control points for the grounding line position along GPS profiles. Employing a two-dimensional elastic plate model, we compute the rigid short-term behaviour of the ice plate and estimate the correction required to compare the kinematic GPS control points with the previously determined line of floatation. These two approaches show consistency and lead us to propose a grounding line for the Astrolabe Glacier that significantly deviates from the lines obtained so far from satellite imagery
Ocean forced variability of Totten Glacier mass loss

The final version is available from the Geological Society of London via the DOI in this record.A large volume of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet drains through the Totten Glacier (TG) and is thought to be a potential source of substantial global sea level rise over the coming centuries. We show the surface velocity and heightof the floating part of TG, which buttresses the grounded component, have varied substantially over two decades (1989–2011), with variations in surface height strongly anti-correlated with simulated basal melt rates (r=0.70, p<0.05). Coupled glacier/ice-shelf simulations confirm ice flow and thickness respond to both basal melting of the ice shelf and grounding on bed obstacles. We conclude the observed variability of TG is primarily ocean-driven. Specific human leukocyte antigen DQ influence on expression of antiislet autoantibodies and progression to type 1 diabetes
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DQ haplotypes have the strongest genetic
association with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) risk. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the
study was to analyze whether HLA DQ alleles influence the development of
antiislet autoantibodies, the progression to T1DM among autoantibody-positive
relatives, or both. DESIGN: The Diabetes Prevention Trial-1 screened more than
90,000 nondiabetic relatives of patients for cytoplasmic islet-cell autoantibody
(ICA) expression between 1994 and 2002. SETTING: The study was conducted in the
general community. PARTICIPANTS: The Diabetes Prevention Trial-1 found 2817
ICA-positive relatives who were tested for biochemical autoantibodies (GAD65,
ICA512, and insulin) and HLA-DQ haplotypes, and 2796 of them were followed up for
progression to diabetes for up to 8 yr (median, 3.6 yr). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE:
Progression to T1DM was measured. RESULTS: High-risk DQ haplotypes and genotypes
were associated with a higher percentage of relatives expressing multiple
biochemical autoantibodies and higher T1DM risk (e.g., respectively, 59 and 36%
at 5 yr for carriers of the DQA1*0301-DQB1*0302/DQA1*0501-DQB1*0201 genotype).
The number of autoantibodies expressed significantly increased T1DM risk and
across different DQ genotypes, autoantibody positivity directly correlated with
diabetes risk. However, multivariate analyses indicated that the influence of
most genotypes on T1DM risk was not independent from autoantibody expression,
with the possible exception of DQA1*0102-DQB1*0602. Specific genotypic
combinations conferred 5-yr diabetes risks significantly lower (e.g.
7%-DQA1*0201-DQB1*0201/DQA1*0501-DQB1*0201 and
14%-DQA1*0301-DQB1*0301/DQA1*0501-DQB1*0201) than when those haplotypes were
found in other combinations. CONCLUSION: HLA DQ alleles determine autoantibody
expression, which is correlated with diabetes progression. Among
autoantibody-positive relatives, most HLA DQ genotypes did not further influence
T1DM risk
