On the classification of (2,1) heterotic strings
We classify all untwisted (2,1) heterotic strings. The only solutions are the
three already known cases, having massless spectra consisting either of 24
chiral fermions, or of 24 bosons, or of 8 scalars and 8 fermions of each
chirality.Comment: Phyzzx and Tables macro packages require

Strings on pp-waves and massive two dimensional field theories
We find a general class of pp-wave solutions of type IIB string theory such
that the light cone gauge worldsheet lagrangian is that of an interacting
massive field theory. When the light cone Lagrangian has (2,2) supersymmetry we
can find backgrounds that lead to arbitrary superpotentials on the worldsheet.
We consider situations with both flat and curved transverse spaces. We describe
in some detail the background giving rise to the N=2 sine Gordon theory on the
worldsheet. Massive mirror symmetry relates it to the deformed model (or
sausage model) which seems to elude a purely supergravity target space
interpretation.Comment: harvmac, 26 pages, v2,3: references added, typos correcte
Ptychographic X-ray tomography reveals additive zoning in nanocomposite single crystals
Single crystals containing nanoparticles represent a unique class of nanocomposites whose properties are defined by both their compositions and the structural organization of the dispersed phase in the crystalline host. Yet, there is still a poor understanding of the relationship between the synthesis conditions and the structures of these materials. Here ptychographic X-ray computed tomography is used to visualize the three-dimensional structures of two nanocomposite crystals – single crystals of calcite occluding diblock copolymer worms and vesicles. This provides unique information about the distribution of the copolymer nano-objects within entire, micron-sized crystals with nanometer spatial resolution and reveals how occlusion is governed by factors including the supersaturation and calcium concentration. Both nanocomposite crystals are seen to exhibit zoning effects that are governed by the solution composition and interactions of the additives with specific steps on the crystal surface. Additionally, the size and shape of the occluded vesicles varies according to their location within the crystal, and therefore the solution composition at the time of occlusion. This work contributes to our understanding of the factors that govern nanoparticle occlusion within crystalline materials, where this will ultimately inform the design of next generation nanocomposite materials with specific structure/property relationships
Parity Violation in Proton-Proton Scattering
Measurements of parity-violating longitudinal analyzing powers (normalized
asymmetries) in polarized proton-proton scattering provide a unique window on
the interplay between the weak and strong interactions between and within
hadrons. Several new proton-proton parity violation experiments are presently
either being performed or are being prepared for execution in the near future:
at TRIUMF at 221 MeV and 450 MeV and at COSY (Kernforschungsanlage Juelich) at
230 MeV and near 1.3 GeV. These experiments are intended to provide stringent
constraints on the set of six effective weak meson-nucleon coupling constants,
which characterize the weak interaction between hadrons in the energy domain
where meson exchange models provide an appropriate description. The 221 MeV is
unique in that it selects a single transition amplitude (3P2-1D2) and
consequently constrains the weak meson-nucleon coupling constant h_rho{pp}. The
TRIUMF 221 MeV proton-proton parity violation experiment is described in some
detail. A preliminary result for the longitudinal analyzing power is Az = (1.1
+/-0.4 +/-0.4) x 10^-7. Further proton-proton parity violation experiments are
commented on. The anomaly at 6 GeV/c requires that a new multi-GeV
proton-proton parity violation experiment be performed.Comment: 13 Pages LaTeX, 5 PostScript figures, uses espcrc1.sty. Invited talk

A Monitor of Beam Polarization Profiles for the TRIUMF Parity Experiment
TRIUMF experiment E497 is a study of parity violation in pp scattering at an
energy where the leading term in the analyzing power is expected to vanish,
thus measuring a unique combination of weak-interaction flavour conserving
terms. It is desired to reach a level of sensitivity of 2x10^-8 in both
statistical and systematic errors. The leading systematic errors depend on
transverse polarization components and, at least, the first moment of
transverse polarization. A novel polarimeter that measures profiles of both
transverse components of polarization as a function of position is described.Comment: 19 pages LaTeX, 10 PostScript figures. To appear in Nuclear
