    Non-Fermi liquid behavior in nearly charge ordered layered metals

    Non-Fermi liquid behavior is shown to occur in two-dimensional metals which are close to a charge ordering transition driven by the Coulomb repulsion. A linear temperature dependence of the scattering rate together with an increase of the electron effective mass occur above T*, a temperature scale much smaller than the Fermi temperature. It is shown that the anomalous temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2MHg(SCN)4, with M=NH4 and Rb, above T*=50-100 K, agrees qualitatively with our predictions for the electronic properties of nearly charge ordered two-dimensional metals.Comment: accepted in Phys.     Prospects for strangeness measurement in ALICE

    The study of strangeness production at LHC will bring significant information on the bulk chemical properties, its dynamics and the hadronisation mechanisms involved at these energies. The ALICE experiment will measure strange particles from topology (secondary vertices) and from resonance decays over a wide range in transverse momentum and shed light on this new QCD regime.     Signatures of electron-electron correlations in the optical spectra of α\alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2M_2MHg(SCN)4_4 (MM=NH4_4 and Rb)

    We interpret the optical spectra of α\alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2M_2MHg(SCN)4_4 (M=NH4_4 and Rb) in terms of a 1/4 filled metallic system close to charge ordering and show that in the conductivity spectra of these compounds a fraction of the spectral weight is shifted from the Drude-peak to higher frequencies due to strong electronic correlations. Analyzing the temperature dependence of the electronic parameters, we distinguish between different aspects of the influence of electronic correlations on optical properties. We conclude, that the correlation effects are slightly weaker in the NH4_4 compound compared to the Rb one.Comment: Proceedings ISCOM0

    The potential role of metal ion release as a marker of loosening in patients with total knee replacement

    We investigated the role of ion release in the assessment of fixation of the implant after total knee replacement and hypothesised that ion monitoring could be a useful parameter in the diagnosis of prosthetic loosening. We enrolled 59 patients with unilateral procedures and measured their serum aluminium, titanium, chromium and cobalt ion levels, blinded to the clinical and radiological outcome which was considered to be the reference standard. The cut-off levels for detection of the ions were obtained by measuring the levels in 41 healthy blood donors who had no implants. Based on the clinical and radiological evaluation the patients were divided into two groups with either stable (n = 24) or loosened (n = 35) implants. A significant increase in the mean level of Cr ions was seen in the group with failed implants (p = 0.001). The diagnostic accuracy was 71% providing strong evidence of failure when the level of Cr ions exceeded the cut-off value. The possibility of distinguishing loosening from other causes of failure was demonstrated by the higher diagnostic accuracy of 83%, when considering only patients with failure attributable to loosening. Measurement of the serum level of Cr ions may be of value for detecting failure due to loosening when the diagnosis is in doubt. The other metal ions studies did not have any diagnostic value

    Monitoring soil wetness variations by means of satellite passive microwave observations: the HYDROPTIMET study cases

    Soil moisture is an important component of the hydrological cycle. In the framework of modern flood warning systems, the knowledge of soil moisture is crucial, due to the influence on the soil response in terms of infiltration-runoff. Precipitation-runoff processes, in fact, are related to catchment's hydrological conditions before the precipitation. Thus, an estimation of these conditions is of significant importance to improve the reliability of flood warning systems. Combining such information with other weather-related satellite products (i.e. rain rate estimation) might represent a useful exercise in order to improve our capability to handle (and possibly mitigate or prevent) hydro-geological hazards. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> Remote sensing, in the last few years, has supported several techniques for soil moisture/wetness monitoring. Most of the satellite-based techniques use microwave data, thanks to the all-weather and all-time capability of these data, as well as to their high sensitivity to water content in the soil. On the other hand, microwave data are unfortunately highly affected by the presence of surface roughness or vegetation coverage within the instantaneous satellite field of view (IFOV). Those problems, consequently, strongly limit the efficiency and the reliability of traditional satellite techniques. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> Recently, using data coming from AMSU (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit), flying aboard NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellites, a new methodology for soil wetness estimation has been proposed. The proposed index, called Soil Wetness Variation Index (<I>SWVI</I>), developed by a multi-temporal analysis of AMSU records, seems able to reduce the problems related to vegetation and/or roughness effects. Such an approach has been tested, with promising results, on the analysis of some flooding events which occurred in Europe in the past. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> In this study, results achieved for the HYDROPTIMET test cases will be analysed and discussed in detail. This analysis allows us to evaluate the reliability and the efficiency of the proposed technique in identifying different amounts of soil wetness variations in different observational conditions. In particular, the proposed indicator was able to document the actual effects of meteorological events, in terms of space-time evolution of soil wetness changes, for all the analysed HYDROPTIMET test cases. Moreover, in some circumstances, the <I>SWVI</I> was able to identify the presence of a sort of 'early' signal in terms of soil wetness variations, which may be regarded as a timely indication of an anomalous value of soil water content. This evidence suggests the opportunity to use such an index in the pre-operational phases of the modern flood warning systems, in order to improve their forecast capabilities and their reliability

    The notion of optimality naturally arises in many areas of applied mathematics and computer science concerned with decision making. Here we consider this notion in the context of two formalisms used for different purposes and in different research areas: graphical games and soft constraints. We relate the notion of optimality used in the area of soft constraint satisfaction problems (SCSPs) to that used in graphical games, showing that for a large class of SCSPs that includes weighted constraints every optimal solution corresponds to a Nash equilibrium that is also a Pareto efficient joint strategy

    Electronic properties of correlated metals in the vicinity of a charge order transition: optical spectroscopy of α\alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2M_2MHg(SCN)4_4 (MM = NH4_4, Rb, Tl)

    The infrared spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors α\alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2_2MMHg(SCN)4_4 (MM = NH4_4, Rb, Tl) were measured in the range from 50 to 7000 \cm down to low temperatures in order to explore the influence of electronic correlations in quarter-filled metals. The interpretation of electronic spectra was confirmed by measurements of pressure dependant reflectance of α\alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2_2KHg(SCN)4_4 at T=300 K. The signatures of charge order fluctuations become more pronounced when going from the NH4_4 salt to Rb and further to Tl compounds. On reducing the temperature, the metallic character of the optical response in the NH4_4 and Rb salts increases, and the effective mass diminishes. For the Tl compound, clear signatures of charge order are found albeit the metallic properties still dominate. From the temperature dependence of the electronic scattering rate the crossover temperature is estimated below which the coherent charge-carriers response sets in. The observations are in excellent agreement with recent theoretical predictions for a quarter-filled metallic system close to charge order

    Assessing the quality of heart rate variability estimated from wrist and finger PPG: A novel approach based on cross-mapping method

    The non-invasiveness of photoplethysmographic (PPG) acquisition systems, together with their cost-effectiveness and easiness of connection with IoT technologies, is opening up to the possibility of their widespread use. For this reason, the study of the reliability of PPG and pulse rate variability (PRV) signal quality has become of great scientific, technological, and commercial interest. In this field, sensor location has been demonstrated to play a crucial role. The goal of this study was to investigate PPG and PRV signal quality acquired from two body locations: finger and wrist. We simultaneously acquired the PPG and electrocardiographic (ECG) signals from sixteen healthy subjects (aged 28.5 ± 3.5, seven females) who followed an experimental protocol of affective stimulation through visual stimuli. Statistical tests demonstrated that PPG signals acquired from the wrist and the finger presented different signal quality indexes (kurtosis and Shannon entropy), with higher values for the wrist-PPG. Then we propose to apply the cross-mapping (CM) approach as a new method to quantify the PRV signal quality. We found that the performance achieved using the two sites was significantly different in all the experimental sessions (p &lt; 0.01), and the PRV dynamics acquired from the finger were the most similar to heart rate variability (HRV) dynamics
