FUNCODE: Effective Device-to-System Analysis of Field Coupled Nanocomputing Circuit Designs
Many beyond-CMOS technologies, based on different switching mechanisms, are arising. Field-coupled technologies are the most promising as they can guarantee an extremely low-power consumption and combine logic and memory into the same device. However, circuit-level explorations, like layout verification and analysis of the circuit performance, considering the constraints of the target technology, cannot be done using existing tools. Here, we propose a methodology to take on this challenge. We present FUNCODE (FUNction & COnnection DEtection), an algorithm that can detect element connections, functions and errors of custom-layouts and generate its corresponding VHDL netlist. It is proposed for in-plane and perpendicular Nano Magnetic Logic as a case study. FUNCODE netlists, which take into account the physical behavior of the technology, were verified using circuits with increasing complexity, from 6 up to 1400 gates with a number of layout elements varying from 200 to 2.3e6
Slab cracking influence in the fatigue assessment of continuous composite decks
The paper analyzes the influence of the slab cracking in the fatigue assessment of continuous composite decks by considering the effects of slab casting sequences and the shrinkage components (thermal, endogenous and drying). A numerical procedure for the stress calculation accounting for the tension stiffening of the slab longitudinal rebars is presented. The long term effects of casting sequences and concrete shrinkage are analysed with a simplified procedure based on the application of the modular ratio method. With reference to a realistic continuous twin girder composite deck the fatigue verification of the longitudinal girders is carried out by considering three different casting modalities. The obtained results show the important role of the slab casting sequences in the stress range calculation and the remarkable influence of the slab cracking in the fatigue assessment
Soil-structure interaction effects on the seismic response of multi-span viaducts
The paper focuses on the effects of soil-structure interaction in the seismic response of multi-span viaducts on pile foundations. Analyses are performed by means of the substructure approach: the soil-foundation systems are studied in the frequency domain to obtain the foundation input motion and the dynamic impedance functions; inertial interaction analyses are carried out in the time domain accounting for the material nonlinear behaviour.
Suitable lumped parameter models are introduced to simulate the frequency dependent behaviour of the soilfoundation system. A specific procedure for selecting and scaling real ground motions is proposed and used for the definition of the spatial seismic input. The seismic response of bridges on compliant base is compared with that obtained from fixed base analyses discussing the significance of soil-structure interaction effects
Hardware Acceleration of Beamforming in a UWB Imaging Unit for Breast Cancer Detection
The Ultrawideband (UWB) imaging technique for breast cancer detection is based on the fact that cancerous cells have different
dielectric characteristics than healthy tissues. When a UWB pulse in the microwave range strikes a cancerous region, the reflected
signal is more intense than the backscatter originating from the surrounding fat tissue. A UWB imaging system consists of transmitters, receivers, and antennas for the RF part, and of a digital back-end for processing the received signals. In this paper we focus on the imaging unit, which elaborates the acquired data and produces 2D or 3D maps of reflected energies. We show that one of the processing tasks, Beamforming, is the most timing critical and cannot be executed in software by a standard microprocessor in a reasonable time.We thus propose a specialized hardware accelerator for it.We design the accelerator in VHDL and test it in an FPGA-based prototype. We also evaluate its performance when implemented on a CMOS 45nm ASIC technology. The speed-up with respect to a software implementation is on the order of tens to hundreds, depending on the degree of parallelism permitted by the target technology
<b><i>Topoisomerase 1</i></b> Promoter Variants and Benefit from Irinotecan in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients
Objective: Topoisomerase 1 (topo-1) is an important target for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between topo-1 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and clinical outcome in metastatic CRC (mCRC) patients.
Methods: With the use of specific software (PROMO 3.0), we performed an in silico analysis of topo-1 promoter SNPs; the rs6072249 and rs34282819 SNPs were included in the study. DNA was extracted from 105 mCRC patients treated with FOLFIRI ± bevacizumab in the first line. SNP genotyping was performed by real-time PCR. Genotypes were correlated with clinical parameters (objective response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival).
Results: No single genotype was significantly associated with clinical variables. The G allelic variant of rs6072249 topo-1 SNP is responsible for GC factor and X-box-binding protein transcription factor binding. The same allelic variant showed a nonsignificant trend toward a shorter progression-free survival (GG, 7.5 months; other genotypes, 9.3 months; HR 1.823, 95% CI 0.8904-3.734; p = 0.1).
Conclusion: Further analyses are needed to confirm that the topo-1 SNP rs6072249 and transcription factor interaction could be a part of tools to predict clinical outcome in mCRC patients treated with irinotecan-based regimens
Hungarian International Development Cooperation: Context, Stakeholders and Performance
This paper explores the domestic and international context of Hungary's emerging international development policy. Specifically, it looks at three factors that may influence how this policy operates: membership in the European Union (EU) and potential ‘Europeanization’, Hungary's wider foreign policy strategy, and the influence of domestic stakeholders. In order to uncover how these factors affect the country's international development policy, semi-structured interviews were carried out with the main stakeholders. The main conclusions are: (1) While accession to the EU did play a crucial role in restarting Hungary's international development policy, the integration has had little effect since then; (2) international development policy seems to serve mainly Hungary's regional strategic foreign policy and economic interests, and not its global development goals; and (3) although all the domestic development stakeholders are rather weak, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) still seems to play a dominating role. Convergence with European requirements and best practices is, therefore, clearly hindered by foreign policy interests and also by the weakness of non- governmental stakeholders
Beyond-CMOS Artificial Neuron: A simulation-based exploration of the molecular-FET
The recent growth of Artificial Neural Networks fueled the design of numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) dedicated hardware implementations. High power dissipation, computational complexity, and large area footprints currently limit CMOS based real-time embedded AI applications. In this work, we design and simulate through SPICE, for the first time, an artificial analog neuron based on the molecular Field-Effect Transistor (molFET) technology. MolFETs are described by a circuital model whose physical characteristics are extracted from atomistic simulations. The designed neuron is a single column of a crossbar-like circuit representing a layer of seven parallel neurons. The drain currents sum up in a soma-like circuit - modelled through a comparator - and trigger the output pulses. We demonstrate the advantages of the molFET in terms of area, power, and speed by comparing it with a conventional MOSFET implementation. The results confirm the molecular technology is a promising candidate for accomplishing high neuron throughput capability and massive redundancy, still providing high energy efficiency. The obtained results foster further investigation of molFET technology both at the device and circuit level
Delayed chronic intracranial subdural hematoma complicating resection of a tanycytic thoracic ependymoma
Background: To demonstrate that the diagnosis of an intracranial subdural hematoma should be considered for patients presenting with acute or delayed symptoms of intracranial pathology following resection of a spinal tumor. Case Description: We present a case of a 57-year-old woman found to have a chronic subdural hematoma 1 month following resection of a thoracic extramedullary ependymoma. Evacuation of the hematoma through a burr hole relieved the presenting symptoms and signs. Resolution of the hematoma was confirmed with a computed tomography (CT) scan. Conclusion: Headache and other symptoms not referable to spinal pathology should be regarded as a warning sign of an intracranial subdural hematoma, and a CT scan of the head should be obtained. The mechanism of the development of the hematoma may be related to the leakage of cerebrospinal fluid with subsequent intracranial hypotension leading to an expanding subdural space and hemorrhage
