    The City Summary Courts in the late 18th century: courts for the people?

    The City of London had two summary courts in the 18th Century, at Guildhall and Mansion House. In these the Lord Mayor and City aldermen used their wide ranging powers to punish vagrants and thieves, reprimand prostitutes and bullock hunters and settle disputes between brawling drunks and warring neighbours. This talk will explore the nature of these courts, the offences they heard and the people they served, using primary court sources from the City’s archive

    This paper will take a broad look at the underlying problems associated with the East End of London in the period immediately before and during the Whitechapel murders. Using both contemporary and more recent histories this paper will explore attitudes towards poverty and prostitution, immigration and social unrest and consider the extent to which the brutal murders of five or more prostitutes highlighted concerns that had existed for some time. The murders and the area have been subject to considerable myth-making in the century or more since the ‘Ripper’ carried out his crimes, this paper will attempt to look beyond the myth and uncover the reality of life in one of the most demonised corners of the British empire

    Using the records of the Guildhall and Mansion House justice rooms, this article explores the summary justice process in the City of London in the second half of the eighteenth century. It suggests that there is much to learn about the way most Londoners experienced and used the law in this period. These courts were arguably more accessible to more people than the jury courts of Assize and Quarter Sessions that have remained the focus for most studies of the history of crime and criminality. This article will provide an introduction to the nature of these courts and to the sorts of offences and offenders that were brought to them

    The goal for our final project was to design and manufacture a record player capable of producing music using a 12 inch LP or 7-inch single vinyl record. When powered, the record player spins the vinyl at a specific speed, and using the needle sound vibrations are sent to an audio amplifier to output sound. A motor is used to control the desired speed and rotate the plate which the vinyl record is placed on. Figure 1 shows a simplified sketch of the needle cartridge system; the system consists of a needle and an attached magnet that is placed near a solenoid to generate an electrical signal based on the needle arm movement. The needle is placed in the grooves of the record causing the needle arm to vibrate, which produces an electrical signal in the solenoid due to the magnet

    Liquitronics Final Project Report

    This final project report details the design evaluation and tests the Liquitronics team conducted on the 96 well plate robotic liquid handler. The team was able to create a prototype that reflects the most important aspects the team set out to accomplish. The main focus of the semester was completing a functioning chassis and movement system along with the pipette mechanism. The following tests were completed: z-axis positional accuracy, x/y-axis positional accuracy, tip discard test, plunger actuator test, fluid volume test, sustained power draw test, and a size and weight test. Both positional accuracy tests passed without significant issues. The z-axis needed to be within 0.5 millimeters of the location for every trial, and the trial with the largest error had an error of 0.1 millimeters. Similarly, the x/y test needed each trial to be within 1 millimeter and the greatest error measured was only 0.6 millimeters. The tip discard test proved that the prototype could eject a pipette tip without fail. This test also gave the time a relationship between the voltage supplied to the linear actuator and the speed at which it moved. These results will aid in determining the working voltage for the prototype’s actuators and electronics. Unfortunately, there were two tests that did not meet their acceptance criteria. The final design is limited to a four foot wide and 2 foot deep space. The current prototype is currently 2.23 feet in both directions. However, after speaking with the project sponsor, it was agreed that the size limit was more flexible than originally stated and thus the current dimensions do not present any practical issues. Additionally, the prototype is well under the 500 pound weight limit measuring at 34 pounds. The second unsuccessful test was the sustained power draw test. This test is meant to prove that the circuitry of the prototype can run for extended periods of time without any components failing. Without any of the motors running, the prototype was drawing just over 300 milliamps. This was lower than what was expected. Also, the voltage regulator began to burn out, and 2 of the 9 stepper motor drivers stopped working. The reason for these failures is not yet known, but the team is currently brainstorming ideas for how to pinpoint the solution, and ensure that it will be fixed. Future improvements will be focused on getting a fully automated prototype. For this to happen, assembly of the mechanical parts must be completed, a full code must be written, and the power draw problems must be addressed

    Serverification of Molecular Modeling Applications: the Rosetta Online Server that Includes Everyone (ROSIE)

    The Rosetta molecular modeling software package provides experimentally tested and rapidly evolving tools for the 3D structure prediction and high-resolution design of proteins, nucleic acids, and a growing number of non-natural polymers. Despite its free availability to academic users and improving documentation, use of Rosetta has largely remained confined to developers and their immediate collaborators due to the code's difficulty of use, the requirement for large computational resources, and the unavailability of servers for most of the Rosetta applications. Here, we present a unified web framework for Rosetta applications called ROSIE (Rosetta Online Server that Includes Everyone). ROSIE provides (a) a common user interface for Rosetta protocols, (b) a stable application programming interface for developers to add additional protocols, (c) a flexible back-end to allow leveraging of computer cluster resources shared by RosettaCommons member institutions, and (d) centralized administration by the RosettaCommons to ensure continuous maintenance. This paper describes the ROSIE server infrastructure, a step-by-step 'serverification' protocol for use by Rosetta developers, and the deployment of the first nine ROSIE applications by six separate developer teams: Docking, RNA de novo, ERRASER, Antibody, Sequence Tolerance, Supercharge, Beta peptide design, NCBB design, and VIP redesign. As illustrated by the number and diversity of these applications, ROSIE offers a general and speedy paradigm for serverification of Rosetta applications that incurs negligible cost to developers and lowers barriers to Rosetta use for the broader biological community.     The stellar mass ratio of GK Persei

    We study the absorption lines present in the spectra of the long-period cataclysmic variable GK Per during its quiescent state, which are associated with the secondary star. By comparing quiescent data with outburst spectra we infer that the donor star appears identical during the two states and the inner face of the secondary star is not noticeably irradiated by flux from the accreting regions. We obtain new values for the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary star, Kk = 120.5 +- 0.7 km/s, a projected rotational velocity, Vksin i = 61.5 +- 11.8 km/s and consequently a measurement of the stellar mass ratio of GK Per, q = Mk/Mwd = 0.55 +- 0.21. The inferred white dwarf radial velocities are greater than those measured traditionally using the wings of Doppler-broadened emission lines suspected to originate in an accretion disk, highlighting the unsuitability of emission lines for mass determinations in cataclysmic variables. We determine mass limits for both components in the binary, Mk >= 0.48 +- 0.32 Msolar and Mwd >= 0.87 +- 0.24 Msolar.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRA

    Anomalous Proximity Effect in Underdoped YBaCuO Josephson Junctions

    Josephson junctions were photogenerated in underdoped thin films of the YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} family using a near-field scanning optical microscope. The observation of the Josephson effect for separations as large as 100 nm between two wires indicates the existence of an anomalously large proximity effect and show that the underdoped insulating material in the gap of the junction is readily perturbed into the superconducting state. The critical current of the junctions was found to be consistent with the conventional Josephson relationship. This result constrains the applicability of SO(5) theory to explain the phase diagram of high critical temperature superconductors.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    The main purpose of the Overview is to provide a comprehensive summary of the most recent indicators of the health and current health status of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It has been prepared by the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet as a part of our contribution to ‘closing the gap’ in health between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians by making relevant, high quality knowledge and information easily accessible to policy makers, health service providers, other health professionals including Health workers, program managers, clinicians, researchers, students and the general community. The initial sections of this Overview provide information about the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, and various measures of population health status. Most of the subsequent sections about specific health conditions comprise an introduction about the condition and evidence of the current burden of the condition among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Information is provided for state and territories and for demographics such as gender and age when it is available and appropriate. While the Overview provides a comprehensive review of key indicators across a range of health topics, it is beyond the scope to provide detailed information on other aspects, such as the availability and use of services (including barriers to their use) and strategies and policies related to specific health topics. Interested readers should refer to the topic-specific reviews that are available on the HealthInfoNet’s website. Additional, more in depth, information about the topics summarised in this Overview is included in the corresponding sections of the HealthInfoNet’s website (www.healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au).
