Extending the data dictionary for data/knowledge management

    Get PDF
Current relational database technology provides the means for efficiently storing and retrieving large amounts of data. By combining techniques learned from the field of artificial intelligence with this technology, it is possible to expand the capabilities of such systems. This paper suggests using the expanded domain concept, an object-oriented organization, and the storing of knowledge rules within the relational database as a solution to the unique problems associated with CAD/CAM and engineering data

The Slowdown in Soviet Defense Expenditures: Comment

    Get PDF
The reason for the apparently opposing results in Brada and Graves\u27 (1988) attempt to explain the reasons for the slowdown in USSR defense expenditures in the mid-1970s is that their analysis suffers from a serious serial correlation problem. The majority of the regressions display Durbin-Watson statistics that reject the null hypothesis of no autocorrelation. A reestimation of their results, after correcting for serial correlation, changes some of their major conclusions regarding the factors influencing Soviet defense spending. The corrected results indicate that no structural break occurred in the mid-1970s. These results suggest that there has been no change in Soviet military doctrine or in the Soviet leadership\u27s preferences in the 1970s. In reply, Brada and Graves argue that the evidence for the existence of serially correlated disturbances is much more tenuous than Chowdhury suggests and that the evidence is more consistent with the existence of a structural break and no serial correlation of disturbances

Sub-picosecond compression by velocity bunching in a photo-injector

    Get PDF
We present an experimental evidence of a bunch compression scheme that uses a traveling wave accelerating structure as a compressor. The bunch length issued from a laser-driven radio-frequency electron source was compressed by a factor >3 using an S-band traveling wave structure located immediately downstream from the electron source. Experimental data are found to be in good agreement with particle tracking simulations.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Spec. Topics A&

The Impact of the Differentiated Curriculum on African American Women High School Students: The Case in St. Louis

    Get PDF
Historians have tagged the transformation to the differentiated curriculum as an influential factor in the shaping of the twentieth-century high school in the United States. Although gender, race, and social class affected the way in which a student\u27s education was altered by the differentiated curriculum, the impact of the differentiated curriculum on African American women high school students has not been studied extensively. This paper examines the effect of the differentiated curriculum on African American women\u27s course selection in St. Louis public high schools from 1914 to 1930. Conclusions drawn here both confirm and challenge the existing literature on women\u27s secondary education
