Electronic Voting: the Devil is in the Details

    Get PDF
Observing electronic voting from an international point of view gives some perspective about its genesis and evolution. An analysis of the voting process through its cultural, ontological, legal and political dimensions explains the difficulty to normalize this process. It appears that international organizations are not capable to properly defend the fundamental rights of the citizens. The approach that was taken when DRE voting computers appeared seems to have reoccured with VVAT voting computers and the european e-poll project.Comment: 9 page

Enrichment of the r-process Element Europium in the Galactic Halo

    Get PDF
We investigate the enrichment of europium, as a representative of r-process elements, in the Galactic halo. In present chemical evolution models, stars are assumed to be formed through shock processes by supernovae (SNe). The enrichment of the interstellar medium is calculated by a one-zone approach. The observed large dispersions in [Eu/Fe] for halo stars, converging with increasing metallicity, can be explained with our models. In addition, the mass range of SNe for the {\it r}-process site is constrained to be either stars of 810M8-10 M_\odot or 30M\gtrsim 30 M_\odot.Comment: 5 pages (including 4 figures), LaTeX, uses aas2pp4.sty, accepted to ApJ

This paper investigates the issue of misogyny in pornography, specifically how violence against women, incest, pedophilia and consent are represented in these materials. To this end, 20 videos from the PornHub “Most Watched” category were analyzed, using the theories and concepts of feminist theorists Andrea Dworkin, Catharine MacKinnon, Gail Dines and Raisa Ribeiro. We seek to analyze the aspects of pornography that make many feminists consider it to be a harmful product for women and for the promotion of gender equality. The analysis shows that pornography presents narratives in which various types of violence against women are eroticized, contributing to the trivialization and naturalization of violence against women

Cassava, flour, tucupi and people: mutual becomings in a casa de farinha

    Get PDF

New insights on the molecular recognition of imidacloprid with Aplysia californica AChBP: a computational study

    Get PDF
The binding of imidacloprid (IMI), the forerunner of neonicotinoid insecticides, with the acetylcholine binding protein (AChBP) from Aplysia californica, the established model for the extracellular domain of insects nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, has been studied with a two-layer ONIOM partition approach (M06-2X/6-311G(d):PM6). Our calculations allow delineating the contributions of the key residues of AChBP for IMI binding. In particular, the importance of Trp147 and Cys190-191, through weak CH...pi interactions and both van der Waals and hydrogen-bond (H-bond) interactions, respectively, are highlighted. Furthermore, H-bonds between hydroxyl groups of both Ser189 and Tyr55 and the IMI nitro group are pointed out. The participation of Ile118, whose main chain NH and carbonyl group are hydrogen-bonded with the IMI pyridinic nitrogen through a water molecule, is characterized. Our simulations also indicate the presence of a significant contribution of this residue through van der Waals interactions. The various trends obtained by the calculations of the pairwise interaction energies are confirmed through a complementary noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis of selected IMI-AChBP amino acid pairs. Indeed, the contribution of a halogen-bond interaction between IMI and AChBP, recently proposed in the literature, is corroborated by our NCI analysis

Trajectory tracking and time delay management of 4-mecanum wheeled mobile robots (4-MWMR)

    Get PDF
International audienceNowadays, wheeled mobile robots have a very important role in industrial applications, namely in transportation tasks thanks to their accuracy and rapidity. However, meeting obstacles while executing a mission can cause an important time delay, which is not appreciable in industry where production must be optimal. This paper deals with the time delay management, the trajectory generation and the tracking problem applied on four wheeled omnidirectional mobile robots. A strategy is proposed to minimize or compensate the time delay caused by obstacles. The approach is done by updating the reference trajectory. This update helps to track the trajectory in real time, a new control law based on the feedback linearization control theory is synthesized to track perfectly generated or updated trajectories

Detection & isolation of sensor and actuator additive faults in a 4-mecanum wheeled mobile robot (4-MWMR)

    Get PDF
International audienceIn this paper, the fault detection and isolation problem regarding actuation and sensing of a 4-mecanum wheeled mobile robot (4-MWMR) is studied. The challenge with respect to the current state of the art lies in detecting and distinguishing wheel sensor from wheel actuator additive faults for this kind of robots. An approach based on generating residuals is proposed. Sensor faults isolation is based on simply analyzing residual signatures which are different under each sensor fault. Due to omni-move properties, actuator faults are, however, more difficult to be isolated. More residual characteristics must be taken into consideration to achieve the isolation
