Struggling to a monumental triumph : Re-assessing the final stages of the smallpox eradication program in India, 1960-1980

The global smallpox program is generally presented as the brainchild of a handful of actors from the WHO headquarters in Geneva and at the agency's regional offices. This article attempts to present a more complex description of the drive to eradicate smallpox. Based on the example of India, a major focus of the campaign, it is argued that historians and public health officials should recognize the varying roles played by a much wider range of participants. Highlighting the significance of both Indian and international field officials, the author shows how bureaucrats and politicians at different levels of administration and society managed to strengthen—yet sometimes weaken—important program components. Centrally dictated strategies developed at WHO offices in Geneva and New Delhi, often in association with Indian federal authorities, were reinterpreted by many actors and sometimes changed beyond recognition

Il s’agit de mettre en regard les domaines à la fois proches et différents de la poésie, de la philosophie et de la mystique, en conjuguant démarche diachronique et synchronique. Après avoir exploré les sources grecques et patristiques, l’analyse essaie de montrer, à partir d’auteurs comme Jean de la Croix, Pascal, Péguy, R. Tagore…, comment la philosophie s’approfondit à la rencontre de la poésie, comment la poésie s’élève à la rencontre de la pensée. Réunies l’une à l’autre par l’esprit, philosophie et poésie s’accomplissent dans la mystique. La fidélité au mystère incline la pensée vers le poème et le poème vers la sagesse.The attempt is made here to confront the fields at once close and different of poetry, philosophy and mysticism, joining together a diachronic and a synchronic approach. Having explored Greek and Patristic sources, the analysis tries to show, starting from authors such as John of the Cross, Pascal, Péguy, R. Tagore…, how philosophy acquires greater depth through contact with poetry, and how poetry reaches in turn greater heights thanks to its contact with thought. Brought together by spirit, philosophy and poetry culminate in mysticism. Faithfulness to mystery draws thought to the poem and the poem to wisdom

lnstrumentalisme et réadaptation psychosociale : Devenir des méthodes processuelles dans les « espaces intermédiaires »

Dans le domaine de la réadaptation psychosociale, les acteurs institutionnels décentrés dans l'espace « intermédiaire » font face à une crise d'identité et à des problèmes dont certains sont liés à une vision instrumentale de la pratique. Cette vision donne un assurage discursif et théorique mais entrave les partenariats possibles. Elle piège les situations relationnelles ouvertes sur du possible en privilégiant ce qui est orienté vers des actes de nature prescriptive et normative. Cet état de fait est encouragé par plusieurs facteurs liés au statut du soignant, aux politiques sanitaires et à leur évaluation. Dès lors, pour maintenir leur action dans l'intermédiaire, les équipes doivent la définir sur la base d'autres paradigmes inducteurs d'une pratique qui reste à la limite du soin et du soutien social.In psychosocial rehabilitation, institutional actors which are not focused on the "intermediate space" (term coined by the authors to describe the time-space of interpersonal, solution-oriented communication filled by the actor and the patient) are faced with an identity crisis and other problems, some of which are linked to a instrumental vision of their practice. Such a vision leads to a discursive and theoretical approach, yet interferes with potential partnerships. Also, it traps open and solution-oriented relational situations by favouring that which is focused on acts of a prescriptive and normative nature. This state of affairs is encouraged by several factors linked to the actor's status, to health policies and to the evaluation of such policies. In future, effective work in this "intermediate space" will require that actors use other inductive models on which to base their practice which, incidentally, remains at the fringe of social care and support

Thérapie institutionnelle, approche écosystémique et réadaptation psycho-sociale

Les soins orientés vers la réadaptation demandent l'intervention d'une équipe pluridisciplinaire, pour une démarche thérapeutique composite, dans le cadre d'un réseau institutionnel. L'approche écosystémique s'avère utile pour la compréhension du fonctionnement de l'appareil institutionnel et pour l'étude de l'organisation ou de la dynamique évolutive des systèmes soignants complexes. Dans une optique où la réadaptation est conçue comme un processus de développement, diverses expériences montrent l'utilité d'adapter l'appareil institutionnel pour favoriser la créativité du système soignant afin qu'il soit suffisamment différencié et autonome pour coévoluer avec le système soigné, en s'adaptant à ses besoins, sans être piégé par la routine institutionnelle.Care oriented toward rehabilitation requires the intervention of an interdisciplinary team to ensure a multidimensional therapeutic strategy within the institutional network. The ecosystemic approach is useful to understand the operation of the institutional apparatus and to study the organization and the evolving dynamics within the complex care system. On the grounds that rehabilitation is viewed as a developmental process, varied experiences demonstrate the need to adapt the institutional apparatus in favor of more creativity within the care system. Indeed, greater creative leeway will allow the care giver to be sufficiently differenciated and autonomous to co-evolve with the care receivers by adapting to the latter's needs without being trapped by the institutional routine

It is not (only) because of the integration and use of new technologies. It is due to a general need to change the paradigm of new learning models (and theories) in accordance with new demands in the knowledge society. Strategic blended eLearning is an opportunity for institutions, universities and companies to utilise the “power” of technology for real social and educational change bringing benefits to all its users. Online education and learning can make a huge impact on the way companies and educational institutions do business. The Web can increase their potential significantly, giving them awareness on a larger scale and increasing or even creating revenue. From a corporate point of view it is recognised that in this day and age where use of technology and business methodologies are all relatively similar organisations need something more unusual to be considered “leading edge”. Creating a corporate university or online learning environment, can educate the people who work on the frontlines of a business. If they are well informed, impart a consistent message and feel valued they become positive ambassadors for the organisation, giving them a competitive advantage, increased productivity and an enhanced knowledge capital. Therefore it is in any case useful to be aware more clearly what the effects of strategic blended eLearning and the IT-integration can offer. The speech/workshop will highlight some of these effects looking at promising examples and methods and discuss the need of the creation of a new learning model. Furthermore the speech/workshop will argue, how this change can influence the requirements to all actors inside the “old” and “new” learning model
