    Towards Large-scale Inconsistency Measurement

    We investigate the problem of inconsistency measurement on large knowledge bases by considering stream-based inconsistency measurement, i.e., we investigate inconsistency measures that cannot consider a knowledge base as a whole but process it within a stream. For that, we present, first, a novel inconsistency measure that is apt to be applied to the streaming case and, second, stream-based approximations for the new and some existing inconsistency measures. We conduct an extensive empirical analysis on the behavior of these inconsistency measures on large knowledge bases, in terms of runtime, accuracy, and scalability.     Subscriber churn in the Australian ISP market

    Rapid growth in Internet use, combined with easy market entry by Internet service providers (ISPs), has resulted in a highly competitive supply of Internet services. Australian ISPs range in size from a few large national operators to niche ISPs focused on specialised service. With many ISPs currently not profitable, subscriber retention is an important aspect of survival. This study develops a model which relates the probability of subscriber churn to various service attributes and subscriber characteristics. Estimation results show that churn probability is positively associated with monthly ISP expenditure, but inversely related to household income. Pricing also matters with subscribers preferring ISPs which offer flat-rate pricing arrangements.

    Energy storage in the UK electrical network : estimation of the scale and review of technology options

    This paper aims to clarify the difference between stores of energy in the form of non-rechargeable stores of energy such as fossil-fuels, and the storage of electricity by devices that are rechargeable. The existing scale of these two distinct types of storage is considered in the UK context, followed by a review of rechargeable technology options. The storage is found to be overwhelmingly contained within the fossil-fuel stores of conventional generators, but their scale is thought to be determined by the risks associated with long supply chains and price variability. The paper also aims to add to the debate regarding the need to have more flexible supply and demand available within the UK electrical network in order to balance the expected increase of wind derived generation. We conclude that the decarbonisation challenge facing the UK electricity sector should be seen not only as a supply and demand challenge but also as a storage challenge. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.     Construction of a multi-sectoral inter-regional IO and SAM database for the UK

    The purpose of this paper is to explain the construction of the input-output (IO) and social accounting matrix (SAM) databases for the inter-regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the UK developed as part of the project 'An Analysis of National and Devolved Economic Policies' undertaken as part of the ESRC Devolution and Constitutional Change research programme. We identify four main regions of the UK: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. However, in Section 2, we begin by constructing a set of two-region accounts where we focus on Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland with the other aggregate 'region' labelled 'rest of the UK' or RUK. Then, in Section 3, we extend to a three-region framework where we identify Scotland, Wales and RUK. Finally, in Section 4, we extend further to construct the full 4-region IO and SAM

    Primordial Magnetic Field Effects on the CMB and Large Scale Structure

    Magnetic fields are everywhere in nature and they play an important role in every astronomical environment which involves the formation of plasma and currents. It is natural therefore to suppose that magnetic fields could be present in the turbulent high temperature environment of the big bang. Such a primordial magnetic field (PMF) would be expected to manifest itself in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropies, and also in the formation of large- scale structure. In this review we summarize the theoretical framework which we have developed to calculate the PMF power spectrum to high precision. Using this formulation, we summarize calculations of the effects of a PMF which take accurate quantitative account of the time evolution of the cut off scale. We review the constructed numerical program, which is without approximation, and an improvement over the approach used in a number of previous works for studying the effect of the PMF on the cosmological perturbations. We demonstrate how the PMF is an important cosmological physical process on small scales. We also summarize the current constraints on the PMF amplitude BλB_\lambda and the power spectral index nBn_B which have been deduced from the available CMB observational data by using our computational framework.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1001.201

    New Constraints on the Primordial Magnetic Field

    We present the newest statistical and numerical analysis of the matter and cosmic microwave background power spectrum with effects of the primordial magnetic field (PMF) included. New limits to the PMF strength and power spectral index are obtained based upon the accumulated data for both the matter and CMB power spectra on small angular scales. We find that a maximum develops in the probability distribution for a magnitude of the PMF of Bλ=0.85±1.25(±1σ)|B_\lambda| = 0.85 \pm 1.25(\pm 1\sigma) nG on a comoving scale of at 1 Mpc, corresponding to upper limits of <2.10nG(68\mathbf{< 2.10 nG} (68% \mathrm{CL}) and <2.98nG(95\mathbf{< 2.98 nG} (95% \mathrm{CL}). While for the power spectral index we find nB=2.370.73+0.88(±1σ)n_\mathrm{B}= -2.37^{+0.88}_{-0.73}(\pm 1\sigma), corresponding to upper limits of <1.19(68 \mathbf{< -1.19} (68% \mathrm{CL}) and <0.25(95CL) \mathbf{< -0.25} (95% \mathrm{CL}). This result provides new constraints on models for magnetic field generation and the physics of the early universe. We conclude that future observational programs for the CMB and matter power spectrum will likely provide not only upper limits but also lower limits to the PMF parameters.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Phys.     Grid-connected renewables, storage and the UK electricity market

    This article is a critical counterpoint to an article by published by Swift-Hook in the journal of Renewable Energy entitled "Grid-connected intermittent renewables are the last to be stored". In contrast to Swift-Hook we found evidence that "grid-connected intermittent renewables" have been, and will continue to be stored when it suits the "UK market" to do so.  This article is important to policy makers as energy storage (through EV battery demand side management for example) may well have an important role to play in facilitating the integration of high wind penetrations

    Design and testing of a contra-rotating tidal current turbine

    A contra-rotating marine current turbine has a number of attractive features: nearzero reactive torque on the support structure, near-zero swirl in the wake, and high relative inter-rotor rotational speeds. Modified blade element modelling theory has been used to design and predict the characteristics of such a turbine, and a model turbine and test rig have been constructed. Tests in a towing tank demonstrated the feasibility of the concept. Power coefficients were high for such a small model and in excellent agreement with predictions, confirming the accuracy of the computational modelling procedures. High-frequency blade loading data were obtained in the course of the experiments. These show the anticipated dynamic components for a contra-rotating machine. Flow visualization of the wake verified the lack of swirl behind the turbine. A larger machine is presently under construction for sea trials
