    Whilst the policies of the centre are designed to support a focused effort researching the field of information and communication technologies (ICTs), including increasingly pervasive communication networks, it is recognised that increasing processing power and the ability to transfer more information faster through both wired and wireless systems means that the developments will also include increased ability to search, filter and share both data and information. Our approach is to find new ways in which technologies can be used to meet the challenges facing health and healthcare in the next 10–15 years. ICTs can both enable and drive change in health and healthcare, and this raises social issues as well as technical ones. Particularly important is that ICTs may drive healthcare towards treating patients nearer (or in) their homes, putting greater emphasis upon bringing the patient more actively into the processes supporting their own healthcare contributing to the transition from the traditional ‘paternalistic’ model to one of negotiation and wider information sharing. . These technologies will generate vast amounts of health-related data. These data are made available to appropriate groups in a timely fashion. It must be processed to yield useful information. This raises questions about how any information generated is used. How is the data analysed? Who owns patient data? Most importantly, who should have access to patient data? The PSC policy documents aim to be both specific yet offer general advice. The intention is to provide cohesive guidance for projects and collective research effort yet provide specific direction to individuals that focus upon their needs. For this reason computer scientists offer to support this process through the provision of tools to steer users through establishing the most appropriate contacts and technology bases inside the pervasive systems centre so as to help find the ‘right’ technology partner and assist in building comprehensive records for collaborative efforts

    Plasma Jet-Substrate Interaction in Low Pressure Plasma Spray-CVD Processes

    Conventional equipment for plasma spraying can be adapted for operation at low pressure so that PECVD-like processing can be performed. The plasma jet generated by the torch is characterized by a high convective velocity and a high gas temperature. The influence of these properties on a deposition process are investigated in the framework of simple theoretical considerations and illustrated by various experimental results obtained with SiO x deposition. A conclusion of this study is that the deposition process is dominated by diffusion effects on the substrate surface: the deposition profiles and the deposition rates are determined by the precursor density and by the gas temperature on the substrate surface. The high velocity of the jet does not play a direct role in the deposition mechanism. On the other hand it strongly increases the precursor density available for the deposition since it efficiently transports the precursor up to the substrat

    A comparison of different approaches for the modelling of shallow foundations in seismic soil-structure interaction problems

    In this work, the performance of two different macroelement models for shallow foundations on sands is assessed by considering the dynamic response of a RC bridge subject to earthquake loading. The first macroelement model is formulated within the framework of kinematic hardening elastoplasticity with prescribed bounding surface (Grange et al. 2009). The second macroelement model has been recently developed within the framework of the theory of hypoplasticity (Salciarini and Tamagnini 2009). The results of a series of FE simulations show that a significant reduction of the computed structural loads can be obtained by taking properly into account the foundation-soil behavior, rather than assuming zero displacements and rotations at the pier bases. The two macroelements considered provide quite similar results, in spite of the large differences existing in their mathematical formulation

    While schistosomiasis is endemic in South Africa, cutaneous manifestations are relatively uncommon. This case report describes the clinical findings in a patient with vulval schistosomiasis.     FIREBALL: Instrument pointing and aspect reconstruction

    The Faint Intergalactic Redshifted Emission Balloon (FIREBALL) had its first scientific flight in June 2009. The instrument is a 1 meter class balloon-borne telescope equipped with a vacuum-ultraviolet integral field spectrograph intended to detect emission from the inter-galactic medium at redshifts 0.3 < z < 1.0. The scientific goals and the challenging environment place strict constraints on the pointing and tracking systems of the gondola. In this manuscript we briefly review our pointing requirements, discuss the methods and solutions used to meet those requirements, and present the aspect reconstruction results from the first successful scientific flight
