Allocation of U.S. Biomass Production to Food, Feed, Fiber, Fuel and Exports
This paper analyzes the end uses—food, feed, fiber, fuel, and exports—of biomass production in the U.S. in 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012. They are also analyzed at the state level in 2012. Biomass production is measured as human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP), an ecological footprint measured as carbon fixed through photosynthesis, derived from data on crop, timber and grazing yields. HANPP was allocated to end uses using publicly available sources from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and internet-based sources publishing data on agricultural trade. HANPP was 717–834 megatons (MT) of carbon per year, which comprised 515–615 MT of crop-based, 105–149 MT timber-based, and 64–76 MT of grazed HANPP. Livestock feed commanded the largest proportion, but decreased from 395 (50%) to 305 MT (42%) of all HANPP and 320 to 240 MT (58–44%) of crop-based HANPP. The proportion allocated to exports was stable at 118–141 MT (17–18%) of total HANPP and 112–133 MT (21–23%) of crop-based HANPP. Biofiber decreased from 141 MT (18%) to 97 MT (13%) of all HANPP. Biofuel increased strongly from 11 MT to 98 MT, from 1% to 14% of all HANPP and 2% to 18% of crop-based HANPP, surpassing food and biofiber by 2012. Direct food commanded 89–105 MT, the lowest proportion at 12–13% of all HANPP, and 17–18% of crop-based HANPP. The highly fertile Midwest and the drought-prone Intermountain West stand out as regions where a very small percentage of biomass is allocated to direct human food. The high proportions of biomass production allocated to nonfood uses is consistent with the tragedy of ecosystem services and commodification of nature frameworks. Reducing these proportions presents opportunities for improving ecosystem services, food security, and human well-being

Design and baseline characteristics of the ParkFit study, a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of a multifaceted behavioral program to increase physical activity in Parkinson patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Many patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) lead a sedentary lifestyle. Promotion of physical activities may beneficially affect the clinical presentation of PD, and perhaps even modify the course of PD. However, because of physical and cognitive impairments, patients with PD require specific support to increase their level of physical activity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We developed the ParkFit Program: a PD-specific and multifaceted behavioral program to promote physical activity. The emphasis is on creating a behavioral change, using a combination of accepted behavioral motivation techniques. In addition, we designed a multicentre randomized clinical trial to investigate whether this ParkFit Program increases physical activity levels over two years in sedentary PD patients. We intended to include 700 sedentary patients. Primary endpoint is the time spent on physical activities per week, which will be measured every six months using an interview-based 7-day recall.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In total 3453 PD patients were invited to participate. Ultimately, 586 patients - with a mean (SD) age of 64.1 (7.6) years and disease duration of 5.3 (4.5) years - entered the study. Study participants were younger, had a shorter disease duration and were less sedentary compared with eligible PD patients not willing to participate.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The ParkFit trial is expected to yield important new evidence about behavioral interventions to promote physical activity in sedentary patients with PD. An Analysis of the Nonprofit and Volunteer Capacity-Building Industries in Central Texas

UniversityRecent research has identified explosive growth in the nonprofit sector and an increased
interest in evaluating and improving nonprofit performance through organizational capacity
building. The growing emphasis on capacity-building services for nonprofits nationwide has
resulted in the need for better information about support services for the sector. Considering the
burgeoning role of capacity building in nonprofit operations, it is important to understand more
about the industry that provides support and resources to nonprofits, including in the growing
communities located in Central Texas. This report represents the first comprehensive study of
nonprofit and volunteer capacity-building activities in Central Texas.
The result of a unique collaboration between graduate students at the Bush School of
Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of
Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, this study was conducted under the
supervision of Dr. Angela Bies at the Bush School and Dr. Sarah Jane Rehnborg at the LBJ
School. Twenty-three graduate students in both programs conducted the research and analysis for
this report from September 2005 through April 2006. The Bush School and the RGK Center for
Philanthropy and Community Service at the LBJ School provided funding for the study. The
project also partnered on a pro bono basis with two client organizations, the United Way Capital
Area and the Texas Nonprofit Management Assistance Network.
The primary research objective was to replicate two recent studies. The first was Millesen
and Bies 2004 report for the Forbes Funds, An Analysis of the Pittsburgh Region s Capacity-
Building Industry. The second was an examination of volunteer management capacity
modeled on a nationwide volunteer management study (Hager, 2004) conducted by the Urban
Institute in collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service. Because our
research took place in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, we also explored
nonprofit capacity issues related to emergency interventions, particularly how crises affect

Melanopsin as a Sleep Modulator: Circadian Gating of the Direct Effects of Light on Sleep and Altered Sleep Homeostasis in Opn4−/− Mice
Analyses in mice deficient for the blue-light-sensitive photopigment melanopsin show that direct effects of light on behavior and EEG depend on the time of day. The data further suggest an unexpected role for melanopsin in sleep homeostasis
