Changes in Self-Concept and Substance-Related Cognitions During Short-Term Residential Substance Use Treatment
The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis, with more than 130 people dying each day from an opioid overdose (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018a). Given the recent spike in overdose deaths associated with highly potent synthetic opioids (i.e., fentanyl), there are few signs of the crisis abating (CDC, 2018a). Compared to other age groups, the prevalence of both heroin and prescription opioid use is particularly elevated among young adults (Sharma, Bruner, Barnett, & Fishman, 2016). While there is a large body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of substance use treatment in general, only 40-60% of individuals remain abstinent in the year following treatment (McLellan, Lewis, O’Brien, & Klebler, 2000). Less attention has been given to the process of treatment, making it challenging to determine what works and what needs improvement. This information is necessary in developing a comprehensive understanding of the treatment process, which in turn, will inform treatment decisions and improve client outcomes.
The current study adds to existing literature by assessing during-treatment change on four proximal outcomes measuring substance-related cognitions (i.e., abstinence self-efficacy and commitment to sobriety) and self-concept (i.e., internalized shame and self-compassion). It was hypothesized that participants would demonstrate significant changes in the favorable direction on all four proximal outcomes. A sample comprised of primarily young adults with opioid use disorders attending short-term residential substance use treatment were enrolled in a naturalistic longitudinal study and assessed at intake, mid-treatment, and discharge. Individual growth curve models were used to examine change over time at both the aggregate and individual levels on the four proximal outcomes. Several potential moderating influences (e.g., demographic information, substance use history, mental health symptoms) were explored to better understand initial status and responses to treatment. Results revealed significant changes in the expected direction on all four proximal outcomes. In addition, several variables emerged as significant predictors of initial status and rates of change. These results provide further evidence that residential substance use treatment is not only a viable option in reducing substance use, but also impacts other important outcomes relevant to clients’ functioning and overall well-being
Long-Term Dynamics of Leafy Spurge (\u3ci\u3eEuphorbia esula\u3c/i\u3e) and its Biocontrol Agent, Flea Beetles in the Genus Aphthona
Three flea beetle species (Aphthona spp.), first introduced into North America in 1988, have come to be regarded as effective biological control organisms for leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula). The black flea beetles (Aphthona lacertosa and A. czwalinae) in particular have been shown to cause reductions in leafy spurge stem counts in the northern Great Plains, while the brown flea beetle (A. nigriscutis) has persisted and spread, but has not been found to be as effective at controlling leafy spurge. The ability of black flea beetles to control leafy spurge in any given year, however, has been found to vary. To better understand the long-term effects of flea beetle herbivory on leafy spurge, we monitored stem counts of leafy spurge and numbers of black and brown flea beetles at three sites on two National Wildlife Refuges in east-central North Dakota, USA, from 1998 to 2006. Brown flea beetle numbers were observed to be negligible on these sites. Over the 9 years of the study, black flea beetles were seen to spread over the three study sites and leafy spurge stem counts declined substantially on two of the three sites. Even at low densities of spurge, black flea beetle populations persisted, a necessary prerequisite for long-term control. We used structural equation models (SEM) to assess the yearly effects of black flea beetles, soil texture, and refuge site on leafy spurge stem counts over this time period. We then used equations developed from the SEM analysis to explore flea beetle–leafy spurge dynamics over time, after controlling for soil texture and refuge. Yearly effect strength of black flea beetles on leafy spurge was found to be modest, largely owing to substantial spatial variability in control. However, simulation results based on prediction coefficients revealed leafy spurge to be highly responsive to increases in flea beetle populations on average
Building a Community of Practice: Strategies Developed by Librarians in the SPARC OpenEd Leadership Program
Do you want to know how other universities develop their OER initiatives? This panel of five librarians will discuss their participation in the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program, a two-semester professional development experience aimed at building expertise and capacity to advance open education in academic libraries, and how it helped shape the development of OER initiatives at their institutions. Over two semesters, the program blends online, peer-to-peer, and project-based learning opportunities to develop participants into subject matter experts with the practical know-how to advance open education initiatives on their campuses.
The panelists will discuss how their participation in the SPARC OpenEd Leadership Program has helped them actualize their visions of an OER initiative at each of their respective institutions. Participants will leave the panel with replicable strategies for effectively communicating with other Open Education coordinators, building an OER knowledge base for their institution, and utilizing methods for developing their own OER initiative. The course content developed for the SPARC program, which is published and shared under a Creative Commons Attribution license, will be shared, as well as strategies for how they can be used by practitioners outside of the program.
The SPARC OpenEd Leadership Program started in August 2017 with a pilot cohort of 14 fellows selected from SPARC member libraries. Pilot fellows were both students and creators, helping to evaluate and improve the curriculum along the way. Moving forward, the program will accept a cohort of fellows each year, who upon successful completion will receive a certificate and the title of SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow.
Whether you’re interested in applying for the 2018-2019 SPARC Open Education Leadership Program or want to build your own learning community, this panel will provide you with ideas for how you can move forward in your OER project development. Strategies will be scalable for different initiatives, from building small OER outreach efforts to expanding upon an already established program. This panel is intended to support OER Coordinators and librarians, but other individuals are welcome to attend to learn about how programs like the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program could support projects underway at their own institutions
Allocation of U.S. Biomass Production to Food, Feed, Fiber, Fuel and Exports
This paper analyzes the end uses—food, feed, fiber, fuel, and exports—of biomass production in the U.S. in 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012. They are also analyzed at the state level in 2012. Biomass production is measured as human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP), an ecological footprint measured as carbon fixed through photosynthesis, derived from data on crop, timber and grazing yields. HANPP was allocated to end uses using publicly available sources from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and internet-based sources publishing data on agricultural trade. HANPP was 717–834 megatons (MT) of carbon per year, which comprised 515–615 MT of crop-based, 105–149 MT timber-based, and 64–76 MT of grazed HANPP. Livestock feed commanded the largest proportion, but decreased from 395 (50%) to 305 MT (42%) of all HANPP and 320 to 240 MT (58–44%) of crop-based HANPP. The proportion allocated to exports was stable at 118–141 MT (17–18%) of total HANPP and 112–133 MT (21–23%) of crop-based HANPP. Biofiber decreased from 141 MT (18%) to 97 MT (13%) of all HANPP. Biofuel increased strongly from 11 MT to 98 MT, from 1% to 14% of all HANPP and 2% to 18% of crop-based HANPP, surpassing food and biofiber by 2012. Direct food commanded 89–105 MT, the lowest proportion at 12–13% of all HANPP, and 17–18% of crop-based HANPP. The highly fertile Midwest and the drought-prone Intermountain West stand out as regions where a very small percentage of biomass is allocated to direct human food. The high proportions of biomass production allocated to nonfood uses is consistent with the tragedy of ecosystem services and commodification of nature frameworks. Reducing these proportions presents opportunities for improving ecosystem services, food security, and human well-being

Equitable Instructor Assessment Changes Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak mandated a rapid transition to online classes with little warning. Previous literature studying the effects of this sudden shift demonstrated enormous impacts on instructors and students. However, the details concerning science instructor assessment choices during this time are less clear. We asked biology instructors to reflect on the changes they made to their assessments of student learning during the emergency transition to remote instruction in spring 2020 and whether the potential changes were motivated by equity concerns. We also asked instructors to describe the assessment changes they intended to keep in future semesters. Through quantitative and qualitative analyses, we found that instructors removed forms of assessment more often than they added them, and the most common changes included how instructors administered exams and engaged students through participation. Instructors reported that equity concerns motivated their decision-making, particularly their concern over students’ ability to access learning resources. Instructors indicated they would keep many of the changes they made in response to the shift to online learning. Our research shows that the pandemic dramatically altered how instructors assessed students in biology, but equity-based decisions leading to lasting change may be one positive outcome for future students
Poor birth weight recovery among low birth weight/preterm infants following hospital discharge in Kampala, Uganda
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Healthy infants typically regain their birth weight by 21 days of age; however, failure to do so may be due to medical, nutritional or environmental factors. Globally, the incidence of low birth weight deliveries is high, but few studies have assessed the postnatal weight changes in this category of infants, especially in Africa. The aim was to determine what proportion of LBW infants had not regained their birth weight by 21 days of age after discharge from the Special Care Unit of Mulago hospital, Kampala.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross sectional study was conducted assessing weight recovery of 235 LBW infants attending the Kangaroo Clinic in the Special Care Unit of Mulago Hospital between January and April 2010. Infants aged 21 days with a documented birth weight and whose mothers gave consent to participate were included in the study. Baseline information was collected on demographic characteristics, history on pregnancy, delivery and postnatal outcome through interviews. Pertinent infant information like gestation age, diagnosis and management was obtained from the medical records and summarized in the case report forms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 235 LBW infants, 113 (48.1%) had not regained their birth weight by 21 days. Duration of hospitalization for more than 7 days (AOR: 4.2; 95% CI: 2.3 - 7.6; p value < 0.001) and initiation of the first feed after 48 hours (AOR: 1.9; 95% CI 1.1 - 3.4 p value 0.034) were independently associated with failure to regain birth weight. Maternal factors and the infant's physical examination findings were not significantly associated with failure to regain birth weight by 21 days of age.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Failure to regain birth weight among LBW infants by 21 days of age is a common problem in Mulago Hospital occurring in almost half of the neonates attending the Kangaroo clinic. Currently, the burden of morbidity in this group of high-risk infants is undetected and unaddressed in many developing countries. Measures for consideration to improve care of these infants would include; discharge after regaining birth weight and use of total parenteral nutrition. However, due to the pressure of space, keeping the baby and mother is not feasible at the moment hence the need for a strong community system to boost care of the infant. Close networking with support groups within the child's environment could help alleviate this problem.</p
