Probing partonic structure in gamma* gamma -> pi pi near threshold
Hadron pair production gamma* gamma -> h hbar in the region where the c.m.
energy is much smaller than the photon virtuality can be described in a
factorized form, as the convolution of a partonic handbag diagram and
generalized distribution amplitudes which are new non-perturbative functions
describing the exclusive fragmentation of a quark-antiquark pair into two
hadrons. Scaling behavior and a selection rule on photon helicity are
signatures of this mechanism. The case where h is a pion is emphasized.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX2
Gluon Shadowing in DIS off Nuclei
Within a light-cone quantum-chromodynamics dipole formalism based on the
Green function technique, we study nuclear shadowing in deep-inelastic
scattering at small Bjorken xB < 0.01. Such a formalism incorporates naturally
color transparency and coherence length effects. Calculations of the nuclear
shadowing for the \bar{q}q Fock component of the photon are based on an exact
numerical solution of the evolution equation for the Green function, using a
realistic form of the dipole cross section and nuclear density function. Such
an exact numerical solution is unavoidable for xB > 0.0001, when a variation of
the transverse size of the \bar{q}q Fock component must be taken into account.
The eikonal approximation, used so far in most other models, can be applied
only at high energies, when xB < 0.0001 and the transverse size of the \bar{q}q
Fock component is "frozen" during propagation through the nuclear matter. At xB
< 0.01 we find quite a large contribution of gluon suppression to nuclear
shadowing, as a shadowing correction for the higher Fock states containing
gluons. Numerical results for nuclear shadowing are compared with the available
data from the E665 and NMC collaborations. Nuclear shadowing is also predicted
at very small xB corresponding to LHC kinematical range. Finally the model
predictions are compared and discussed with the results obtained from other
models.Comment: 29 pages including 7 figures; Fig.7 modified, some references and

Lambda polarization and single-spin left-right asymmetry in diffractive hadron-hadron collisions
We discuss Lambda polarization and single-spin left-right asymmetry in
diffractive hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. We show that the
physical picture proposed in a recent Letter is consistent with the
experimental observation that polarization in the diffractive
process, , is much higher than that in the inclusive
reaction, . We make predictions for the left-right asymmetry,
A_N, and for the spin transfer, , in the single-spin process
and suggest further experimental tests of the
proposed picture.Comment: 14 pages, 3 ps-figures. Phys. Rev. D (in press
Radio emission of extensive air shower at CODALEMA: Polarization of the radio emission along the v*B vector
Cosmic rays extensive air showers (EAS) are associated with transient radio
emission, which could provide an efficient new detection method of high energy
cosmic rays, combining a calorimetric measurement with a high duty cycle. The
CODALEMA experiment, installed at the Radio Observatory in Nancay, France, is
investigating this phenomenon in the 10^17 eV region. One challenging point is
the understanding of the radio emission mechanism. A first observation
indicating a linear relation between the electric field produced and the cross
product of the shower axis with the geomagnetic field direction has been
presented (B. Revenu, this conference). We will present here other strong
evidences for this linear relationship, and some hints on its physical origin.Comment: Contribution to the 31st International Cosmic Ray Conference, Lodz,

Ion-Abrasion Scanning Electron Microscopy Reveals Surface-Connected Tubular Conduits in HIV-Infected Macrophages
HIV-1-containing internal compartments are readily detected in images of thin sections from infected cells using conventional transmission electron microscopy, but the origin, connectivity, and 3D distribution of these compartments has remained controversial. Here, we report the 3D distribution of viruses in HIV-1-infected primary human macrophages using cryo-electron tomography and ion-abrasion scanning electron microscopy (IA-SEM), a recently developed approach for nanoscale 3D imaging of whole cells. Using IA-SEM, we show the presence of an extensive network of HIV-1-containing tubular compartments in infected macrophages, with diameters of ∼150–200 nm, and lengths of up to ∼5 µm that extend to the cell surface from vesicular compartments that contain assembling HIV-1 virions. These types of surface-connected tubular compartments are not observed in T cells infected with the 29/31 KE Gag-matrix mutant where the virus is targeted to multi-vesicular bodies and released into the extracellular medium. IA-SEM imaging also allows visualization of large sheet-like structures that extend outward from the surfaces of macrophages, which may bend and fold back to allow continual creation of viral compartments and virion-lined channels. This potential mechanism for efficient virus trafficking between the cell surface and interior may represent a subversion of pre-existing vesicular machinery for antigen capture, processing, sequestration, and presentation

Collisional kinetics of non-uniform electric field, low-pressure, direct-current discharges in H
A model of the collisional kinetics of energetic hydrogen atoms, molecules,
and ions in pure H discharges is used to predict H emission
profiles and spatial distributions of emission from the cathode regions of
low-pressure, weakly-ionized discharges for comparison with a wide variety of
experiments. Positive and negative ion energy distributions are also predicted.
The model developed for spatially uniform electric fields and current densities
less than A/m is extended to non-uniform electric fields, current
densities of A/m, and electric field to gas density ratios MTd at 0.002 to 5 Torr pressure. (1 Td = V m and 1 Torr =
133 Pa) The observed far-wing Doppler broadening and spatial distribution of
the H emission is consistent with reactions among H, H,
H, and H ions, fast H atoms, and fast H molecules, and with
reflection, excitation, and attachment to fast H atoms at surfaces. The
H excitation and H formation occur principally by collisions of
fast H, fast H, and H with H. Simplifications include using a
one-dimensional geometry, a multi-beam transport model, and the average
cathode-fall electric field. The H emission is linear with current
density over eight orders of magnitude. The calculated ion energy distributions
agree satisfactorily with experiment for H and H, but are only in
qualitative agreement for H and H. The experiments successfully modeled
range from short-gap, parallel-plane glow discharges to beam-like,
electrostatic-confinement discharges.Comment: Submitted to Plasmas Sources Science and Technology 8/18/201
Radio emission of highly inclined cosmic ray air showers measured with LOPES
LOPES (LOFAR Prototype Station) is an array of dipole antennas used for
detection of radio emission from air showers. It is co-located and triggered by
the KASCADE (Karlsruhe Shower Core and Array Detector) experiment, which also
provides informations about air shower properties. Even though neither LOPES
nor KASCADE are completely optimized for the detection of highly inclined
events, a significant number of showers with zenith angle larger than 50
have been detected in the radio domain, and many with very high field
strengths. Investigation of inclined showers can give deeper insight into the
nature of primary particles that initiate showers and also into the possibility
that some of detected showers are triggered by neutrinos. In this paper, we
show the example of such an event and present some of the characteristics of
highly inclined showers detected by LOPES
Independence of , Poincare Invariance and the Non-Conservation of Helicity

Coherent QCD phenomena in the Coherent Pion-Nucleon and Pion-Nucleus Production of Two Jets at High Relative Momenta
We use QCD to compute the cross section for coherent production of a di-jet
(treated as a moving at high relative transverse momentum,). In the target rest frame, the space-time evolution of this reaction is
dominated by the process in which the high component of
the pion wave function is formed before reaching the target. It then interacts
through two gluon exchange. In the approximation of keeping the leading order
in powers of and all orders in
the amplitudes for other processes are
shown to be smaller at least by a power of . The resulting dominant
amplitude is proportional to ( is the fraction
light-cone(+)momentum carried by the quark in the final state) times the skewed
gluon distribution of the target. For the pion scattering by a nuclear target,
this means that at fixed (but ) the nuclear process in which there is only a single interaction is the
most important one to contribute to the reaction. Thus in this limit color
transparency phenomena should occur. These findings are in accord with E971
experiment at FNAL. We also re-examine a potentially important nuclear multiple
scattering correction which is positive and . The
meaning of the signal obtained from the experimental measurement of pion
diffraction into two jets is also critically examined and significant
corrections are identified. We show also that for values of achieved
at fixed target energies, di-jet production by the e.m. field of the nucleus
leads to an insignificant correction which gets more important as
increases.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure
