    Highly Stable [C\u3csub\u3e60\u3c/sub\u3eAuC\u3csub\u3e60\u3c/sub\u3e]\u3csup\u3e+/-\u3c/sup\u3e Dumbbells

    Ionic complexes between gold and C60 have been observed for the first time. Cations and anions of the type [Au(C60)2]+/- are shown to have particular stability. Calculations suggest that these ions adopt a C60-Au-C60 sandwich-like (dumbbell) structure, which is reminiscent of [XAuX]+/- ions previously observed for much smaller ligands. The [Au(C60)2]+/- ions can be regarded as Au(I) complexes, regardless of whether the net charge is positive or negative, but in both cases, the charge transfer between the Au and C60 is incomplete, most likely because of a covalent contribution to the Au-C60 binding. The C60-Au-C60 dumbbell structure represents a new architecture in fullerene chemistry that might be replicable in synthetic nanostructures.

A dieta interfere na composição de ácidos graxos das membranas celularesque serão metabolizados em compostos ativos chamados de resolvinas, protectinas e maresinas.Como as doenças inflamatórias têm papel importante na saúde pública o estudo destas substâncias eo delineamento de seus efeitos podem trazer novos horizontes no tratamento das doenças inflamató-rias, com redução de custos e minimização de efeitos colaterais.Inflammation is a defensive response to the trauma, infections or injury to the organism. When inflammation is ending occurs a program for active regulation called the resolution. This is accompanied by a classof lipid mediators where there is alternation of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes to proresolution mediators, produced from   3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic and docosapentanoicacid). The diet interferes the fatty acid composition of cell membranes that will be metabolized to activecompounds called resolvins, protectins and maresins. The inflammatory diseases have an important rolein public health, so the study of these substances and delineation of their effects can bring new horizons inthe treatment of inflammatory diseases, reducing costs and minimizing side effects

Clusters of Au, C60, H2O, and serine are produced inside helium nanodroplets using a combination of ionization, mass filtering, collisions with atomic or molecular vapor, and electrostatic extraction, in a specific and novel sequence. The helium droplets are produced in an expansion of cold helium gas through a nozzle into vacuum. The droplets are ionized by electron bombardment and subjected to a mass filter. The ionic and mass-selected helium droplets are then guided through a vacuum chamber filled with atomic or molecular vapor where they collide and "pick up" the vapor. The dopants then agglomerate inside the helium droplets around charge centers to singly charged clusters. Evaporation of the helium droplets is induced by collisions in a helium-filled radio frequency (RF)-hexapole, which liberates the cluster ions from the host droplets. The clusters are analyzed with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. It is demonstrated that using this sequence, the size distribution of the dopant cluster ions is distinctly narrower compared to ionization after pickup. Likewise, the ion cluster beam is more intense. The mass spectra show, as well, that ion clusters of the dopants can be produced with only few helium atoms attached, which will be important for messenger spectroscopy. All these findings are important for the scientific research of clusters and nanoscale materials in general.publishersversionpublishe

    Este artigo descreve os exames clínicos realizados no Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil). Alguns deles (antropometria, pressão arterial e índice tornozelo-braquial) já têm uso clínico consolidado. Outros, como a velocidade de onda de pulso, variabilidade da frequência cardíaca e medida da espessura médio-intimal de carótidas, carecem de valor de referência na população brasileira não doente e podem constituir preditores importantes de desfechos cardiovasculares. A medida da pressão arterial após manobra postural foi incluída no ELSA-Brasil porque foi pouco testada em estudos epidemiológicos. O ELSA-Brasil inovou na realização do índice tornozelo-braquial, ao usar um aparelho automático em substituição à coluna de mercúrio na medida da pressão arterial, e também na medida do diâmetro ântero-posterior do lobo direito do fígado pela ultrassonografia, proposta para avaliação quantitativa da doença hepática gordurosa não-alcoólica. Os participantes são indivíduos mais jovens (a partir dos 35 anos) do que em outras coortes focadas no estudo da aterosclerose subclínica. A inclusão de indivíduos mais jovens e a diversidade dos exames realizados tornam o ELSA-Brasil um estudo relevante no contexto da epidemiologia brasileira e internacional.The article describes assessments and measurements performed in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Some assessments including anthropometric assessment, casual blood pressure measurement, and ankle-brachial index have an established clinical application while others including pulse wave velocity, heart rate variability, and carotid intima-media thickness have no established application and do not have reference values for healthy Brazilian population but may be important predictors of cardiovascular outcomes. Blood pressure measurement following postural change maneuver was included in the ELSA-Brasil because it has not been much tested in epidemiological studies. Innovative approaches were developed for assessing the ankle-brachial index using an automatic device instead of the mercury column to measure blood pressure and for assessing the anterior-posterior diameter of the right lobe of the liver by ultrasound for quantitative assessment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. All ELSA-Brasil subjects were younger (35 years or more) than those included in other cohorts studying subclinical atherosclerosis.
