    Function algorithms for MPP scientific subroutines, volume 1

    Design documentation and user documentation for function algorithms for the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) are presented. The contract specifies development of MPP assembler instructions to perform the following functions: natural logarithm; exponential (e to the x power); square root; sine; cosine; and arctangent. To fulfill the requirements of the contract, parallel array and solar implementations for these functions were developed on the PDP11/34 Program Development and Management Unit (PDMU) that is resident at the MPP testbed installation located at the NASA Goddard facility

    Using immersive audio and vibration to enhance remote diagnosis of mechanical failure in uncrewed vessels.

    There is increasing interest in the maritime industry in the potential use of uncrewed vessels to improve the efficiency and safety of maritime operations. This leads to a number of questions relating to the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems, in particular, critical propulsion systems which if a failure occurs could endanger the vessel. While control data is commonly monitored remotely, engineers on board ship also employ a wide variety of sensory feedback such as sound and vibration to diagnose the condition of systems, and these are often not replicated in remote monitoring. In order to assess the potential for enhancement of remote monitoring and diagnosis, this project simulated an engine room (ER) based on a real vessel in Unreal Engine 4 for the HTC ViveTM VR headset. Audio was recorded from the vessel, with mechanical faults synthesized to create a range of simulated failures. In order to simulate operational requirements, the system was remotely fed data from an external server. The system allowed users to view normal control room data, listen to the overall sound of the space presented spatially over loudspeakers, isolate the sound of particular machinery components, and feel the vibration of machinery through a body worn vibration transducer. Users could scroll through a 10-hour time history of system performance, including audio, vibration and data for snapshots at hourly intervals. Seven experienced marine engineers were asked to assess several scenarios for potential faults in different elements of the ER. They were assessed both quantitatively regarding correct fault identification, and qualitatively in order to assess their perception of usability of the system. Users were able to diagnose simulated mechanical failures with a high degree of accuracy, mainly utilising audio and vibration stimuli, and reported specifically that the immersive audio and vibration improved realism and increased their ability to diagnose system failures from a remote location

    Evidence for Decline in the Unionidae of the East Branch Rocky River, Ohio

    A survey of freshwater mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) was conducted for the East Branch Rocky River, Ohio, during the summer of 2006. Development in this watershed is moderate though rapidly expanding, particularly in the upstream reaches. Perhaps as a consequence, a preliminary search failed to reveal any live mussels in the river in 2003 . The present report is of an extensive survey covering 21 two-hour timed searches for live mussels and shells combined with visual assessments of disturbance and tests for water quality at each site. All searches were visual or by feeling for mussels embedded in the stream bottom where visibili ty was poor. These surveys produced only 34 live animals and 287 empty shells, which included live specimens of Lampsilis radiata /uteo/a, Lasmigona costata, Lasmigona compressa, and Strophitus undulatus as well as fresh shells of Pyganodon grandis. The few sites that contained live animals and fresh shells were isolated, while worn shells were distributed more evenly throughout the river, suggesting a wider distribution of mussels in the past. Present water quality appeared good, and, therefore, the relatively low density and spatial isolation of unionids may reflect local geomorphologic factors combined with historic and current land usage

    Enhance Engine Room Diagnostics Through Audio-Focused VR Simulation

    A marine engineer’s task is to maintain all systems in an operational state, to diagnose and rectify problems arising, and to understand what maintenance will be required to keep the vessel appropriately operational and safe. This capability is built upon the training and experience of the engineering crew, the information that can be gained by reading and interpreting engine room instrumentation, and the familiarity with the vessel and an in-situ intuitive feel for normal operation. In this paper, we examine how audio can enhance remote interaction and feedback information. We gathered real-world data from an engine room that allow us to create a realistic virtual engine room for testing. We carried out usability test on simulated failure scenarios where we look at how VR technology might enable engineers to experience immersive information from a remote location and allow them to diagnose and give feedback on the system. Our findings suggest that sound plays a vital role in identifying failures and could potentially be used in the operation of unmanned and autonomous vessels

    Attitudes Surrounding a Community-Based Fitness Intervention at an Urban FQHC

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The population surrounding an urban federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Philadelphia has poorer health than Philadelphia overall. Community residents identified aerobics and dance classes as very important services or programs that an FQHC might provide. We sought to measure the impact of participation in a resident physician-led, patient-centered fitness and nutrition class on participants’ attitudes, knowledge, and self-efficacy regarding their health. METHODS: An urban line dancing class and brief healthy eating intervention for adults was held at a YMCA adjacent to a residency-affiliated FQHC weekly for 8 weeks. Pre/postsurveys were administered to assess attitudes and confidence toward physical activity and healthy lifestyles. RESULTS: Participants’ self-assessment of health and levels of physical activity improved. Confidence in performing everyday activities, doing regular exercise and exercising without making symptoms worse increased. A significant decrease in participants’ physical activity gratification was observed. Participants’ confidence improved in reading food labels for health, but confidence in eating a balanced diet did not improve. CONCLUSIONS: A resident-led fitness and nutrition class, tailored to perceived community needs, generated significant interest and sustained participation. This pilot study furthered development of community infrastructure addressing health, nutrition, and overall fitness, and the results reflect opportunities and challenges of engaging communities in physical fitness

    Las exposiciones de El Lissitzky a través del Cine-ojo

    [EN] The Avant-Garde movements of the twentieth century explored the creative possibilities of new types of media in architecture, such as the photographic camera or cinema. In a series of experimental projects, authors such as El Lissitzky based their work on assimilating the human eye with a mechanical lens, making it possible to create new concepts of space. A simultaneous consideration of the resources of Vertov’s Cine-Eye in relation to the exhibition projects of El Lissitzky reveals some of his proposals as paradigmatic examples of the perceptive experimentation of the viewer in relation to art, and in a wider sense, to architecture. By analysing the cinematic resources of the film Man with a Movie Camera (1929), architectural aspects are analysed in the exhibition spaces of the Abstract Cabinet and PRESSA, identifying connections that break down the boundaries between the different disciplines.[ES] Las Vanguardias de principios del siglo XX exploran la capacidad creativa de los nuevos medios en la arquitectura, como la cámara fotográfica o el cine. En proyectos propicios para la experimentación, autores como El Lissitzky parten de la asimilación del ojo humano a un objetivo mecánico que permite la formulación de nuevos conceptos espaciales. Una lectura en paralelo de recursos del Cine-ojo de Vertov sobre proyectos expositivos de El Lissitzky, sitúa algunas de sus propuestas como ejemplos paradigmáticos de la experimentación perceptiva del espectador sobre el objeto artístico y, en un sentido más amplio, sobre la arquitectura.
