    Several studies have shown that adults integrate visual and haptic information (and information from other modalities) in a statistically optimal fashion, weighting each sense according to its reliability. To date no studies have investigated when this capacity for cross-modal integration develops. Here we show that prior to eight years of age, integration of visual and haptic spatial information is far from optimal, with either vision or touch dominating totally, even in conditions where the dominant sense is far less precise than the other (assessed by discrimination thresholds). For size discrimination, haptic information dominates in determining both perceived size and discrimination thresholds, while for orientation discrimination vision dominates. By eight-ten years, the integration becomes statistically optimal, like adults. We suggest that during development, perceptual systems require constant recalibration, for which cross-sensory comparison is important. Using one sense to calibrate the other precludes useful combination of the two sources

Como estas evaluaciones pueden tener consecuencias relevantes para los sujetos examinados, es necesario investigar la máxima objetividad del proceso evaluador. El modelo de Rasch es el único procedimiento estadístico que asegura la medición objetiva, incluso en el proceso evaluador de jueces. Este artículo repasa la teoría del modelo de Rasch y propone una aplicación de datos relativos a la evaluación de proyectos financiados. Se examinan también las alteraciones significativas que se detectan cuando se emplean los modelos de las mediciones de Rasch.ABSTRACTA variety of human activities - sport, education, finance, research, professional development, feeding - require the participation of judges in order to evalúate aspects that are difficult to be measured directly.     RASCH ANALYSIS OF THE HOPE-SSQ QUESTIONNAIRE

    The data arising from the \u201cHOPE ?WG1 - SSQ - Questionnaire\u201d, gathered on almost 1500 students in 27 sites around Europe, has been analyzed using Rasch models, in order to extract and measure factors inspiring to study physics. In particular, using a Rating Scale Model (Wright & Masters, 1982) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of standardized residuals, we identified and measured two main latent traits. These factors, interacting with other personal characteristics such as sex, level of knowledge of physics and so on, may influence performance, decisions, goals and preferences. We applied multilevel logistic regression models with SIMEX correction (Lederer & K\ufcchenhoff, 2006), using the estimated factors as explanatory variables: the results show that these are significant and relevant in explaining the decision to study physics, in association with the level of knowledge of physics and the wish to become a physics teacher. Some possible guidelines for stimulating the decision to study physics arises from this analysis

    Long‑term Effectiveness and Safety of Upadacitinib for Atopic Dermatitis in a Real‑world Setting: An Interim Analysis Through 48 Weeks of Observation

    Background Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, including upadacitinib, have been recently approved for the treatment of moderate- severe atopic dermatitis (AD) and real-world data on upadacitinib effectiveness and safety are limited. This interim analysis aimed to assess effectiveness and safety of upadacitinib throughout 48 weeks of observation in a real-world adult AD population. Methods This prospective study collected data on adult patients affected by moderate-to-severe AD and treated with upadacitinib at the dosage of either 15 mg or 30 mg daily based on the physician decision. Upadacitinib was prescribed in the context of a national compassionate use programme. In this interim analysis, within patient comparisons of continuous scores of different scales (namely Eczema Area and Severity Index [EASI], body surface area [BSA], Dermatology Life Quality Index [DLQI], Patient Oriented Eczema Measure [POEM], Numeric Rating Scale [NRS] subtests) were performed. The percentage of patients achieving EASI 75, EASI 90 and EASI 100 at Week 16, 32 and 48 was also evaluated. Results One hundred and forty-six patients were included in the analysis. Upadacitinib 15 mg or 30 mg daily was prescribed as monotherapy in most cases (127/146, 87.0%). Upadacitinib was initially prescribed at the dosage of 30 mg daily in 118 of 146 (80.8%) patients and 15 mg daily in 28/146 (19.2%) patients. A significant improvement in the clinical signs and symptoms of AD was detected by Week 16 and throughout the study period. EASI 75, EASI 90 and EASI 100 responses were achieved by 87.6%, 69.1% and 44.3% at Week 48, associated with a sustained reduction in the mean values of all physicianreported (EASI and BSA) and patient-reported (Itch- Sleep- and Pain-NRS, DLQI, and POEM) disease severity outcomes, up to 48 weeks of treatment. Treatment response observed in 15 mg upadacitinib-treated patients was comparable with that detected in 30 mg upadacitinib-treated patients, revealing no statistical difference between the two patient sub-cohorts. Through the observation period, dose reduction or escalation was observed in 38/146 (26%) of treated cases. Overall, 26 of 146 (17.8%) patients experienced at least one adverse event (AE) during the treatment period. In total, 29 AEs were recorded and most of them were evaluated as mild to moderate, while in 4 cases the occurrence of AE led to drug discontinuation, for a total of 7/146 (4.8%) dropouts. Conclusion This study provides strong evidence of a sustained response obtained by upadacitinib in AD patients, who had failed to respond to conventional or biological systemic agents, through 48 weeks of observation. Upadacitinib was also demonstrated to be advantageous in terms of flexibility in dose reduction or escalation as upadacitinib dose was shaped on clinical needs that, in a real-world setting, might frequently change

    Endovascular aortic graft infection resulting in retroperitoneal abscess: report of a case

    Infection is a rare complication of aortoiliac endovascular procedures, with an incidence inferior to 0.5%, and it may result in a retroperitoneal abscess potentially evolving to sepsis and gastrointestinal bleeding. In more than 50% of cases endovascular aortoiliac prosthetic grafts infection occur months or years after the procedure. The growing number of endovascular procedures, and as the actually midterm follow up in most cases, septic sequelae will no doubt continue to occur with increased frequency and may represent an emerging problem in the ED for the emergency physician. Endovascular graft infection begins with unspecific clinical manifestations. An high index of suspicion in any patient with an aortic stent graft presenting prolonged or recurrent fever and or abdominal or back pain and a low threshold for obtaining CT scan should increase the clinician's ability to make a timely diagnosis in the ED setting

    Dopaminergic Control of Striatal Cholinergic Interneurons Underlies Cocaine-Induced Psychostimulation

    Cocaine drastically elevates dopamine (DA) levels in the striatum, a brain region that is critical to the psychomotor and rewarding properties of the drug. DA signaling regulates intrastriatal circuits connecting medium spiny neurons (MSNs) with afferent fibers and interneurons. While the cocaine-mediated increase in DA signaling on MSNs is well documented, that on cholinergic interneurons (ChIs) has been more difficult to assess. Using combined pharmacological, chemogenetic, and cell-specific ablation approaches, we reveal that the D2R-dependent inhibition of acetylcholine (ACh) signaling is fundamental to cocaine-induced changes in behavior and the striatal genomic response. We show that the D2R-dependent control of striatal ChIs enables the motor, sensitized, and reinforcing properties of cocaine. This study highlights the importance of the DA- and D2R-mediated inhibitory control of ChIs activity in the normal functioning of striatal networks

    Sexual and Reproductive Health and Education of Adolescents during COVID-19 Pandemic, Results from “Come Te La Passi?”—Survey in Bologna, Italy

    Social distancing measures adopted to face the COVID-19 pandemic had a detrimental impact on adolescent education and their interaction with peers and adults, secondary to the limitation of school and recreational activities, with repercussions on social and sexual life. The “Come te la passi?” (“How is it going?”) study, performed in the Metropolitan City of Bologna (Italy), aimed at investigating the type of information sources adopted by adolescents for their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge and education, the age of their sexual debut, and the way in which the COVID-19 pandemic affected their relationships and sexual life in order to help local health care professionals and educators designing SRH education programs. A purposely designed online survey was administered during the COVID-19 pandemic to 378 high school students (age > 14 yo) in July 2021. Based on the study results, the most common source of SRH education was the web, followed by peers (friends). A total of 61.3% of 17-year-olds already had sexual intercourse, and 90% of 15-year-olds had experienced romantic or sexual attraction. For 58.2% of the adolescents, the COVID-19 pandemic had negative effects on their relationships/sexual life. The current research emphasizes the need to involve health care professionals and educators in structured programs to promote SRH education tailored to adolescents’ needs and started from early ages
