Evolution of the electronic structure with size in II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals

    Get PDF
In order to provide a quantitatively accurate description of the band gap variation with sizes in various II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals, we make use of the recently reported tight-binding parametrization of the corresponding bulk systems. Using the same tight-binding scheme and parameters, we calculate the electronic structure of II-VI nanocrystals in real space with sizes ranging between 5 and 80 {\AA} in diameter. A comparison with available experimental results from the literature shows an excellent agreement over the entire range of sizes.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.

Characterization of a New Mouse Model for Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma in Humans

Peripheral T cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are associated with a poor prognosis due to often advanced disease at the time of diagnosis and due to a lack of efficient therapeutic options. Therefore, appropriate animal models of PTCL are vital to improve clinical management of this disease. Here, we describe a monoclonal CD8+ CD4− αÎČ T cell receptor VÎČ2+ CD28+ T cell lymphoma line, termed T8-28. T8-28 cells were isolated from an un-manipulated adult BALB/c mouse housed under standard pathogen-free conditions. T8-28 cells induced terminal malignancy upon adoptive transfer into syngeneic BALB/c mice. Despite intracellular expression of the cytotoxic T cell differentiation marker granzyme B, T8-28 cells appeared to be defective with respect to cytotoxic activity as read-out in vitro. Among the protocols tested, only addition of interleukin 2 in vitro could partially compensate for the in vivo micro-milieu in promoting growth of the T8-28 lymphoma cells

A sex-limited serum protein variant in the mouse: Inheritance and association with the H-2 region

An alloantiserum produced in the mouse has been used to detect an antigen which is present only in male serum from certain inbred strains of mice, e.g., DBA/2J, A/J, and BALB/c. Genetic tests reveal that the presence of this antigen is controlled by a dominant autosomal gene which is expressed only in males of the proper genotype. Test crosses and analysis of congenic resistant strains indicate close linkage between the sex-limited protein ( Slp ) and the histocompatibility-2 ( H-2 ) region of linkage group IX. Analysis of seven intra- H-2 recombinant strains is consistent with the placement of the genetic determinant for Slp within the H-2 region in the same position as the Ss (serum substance) determinant. Immunological evidence suggests that the Slp antigenic sites reflect structural variation in the Ss component of mouse serum.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44166/1/10528_2004_Article_BF00485752.pd

Low-Cost Flexible Nano-Sulfide/Carbon Composite Counter Electrode for Quantum-Dot-Sensitized Solar Cell

    Get PDF
Cu2S nanocrystal particles were in situ deposited on graphite paper to prepare nano-sulfide/carbon composite counter electrode for CdS/CdSe quantum-dot-sensitized solar cell (QDSC). By optimization of deposition time, photovoltaic conversion efficiency up to 3.08% was obtained. In the meantime, this composite counter electrode was superior to the commonly used Pt, Au and carbon counter electrodes. Electrochemical impedance spectra further confirmed that low charge transfer resistance at counter electrode/electrolyte interface was responsible for this, implied the potential application of this composite counter electrode in high-efficiency QDSC

Writing Russia's future: paradigms, drivers, and scenarios

    Get PDF
The development of prediction and forecasting in the social sciences over the past century and more is closely linked with developments in Russia. The Soviet collapse undermined confidence in predictive capabilities, and scenario planning emerged as the dominant future-oriented methodology in area studies, including the study of Russia. Scenarists anticipate multiple futures rather than predicting one. The approach is too rarely critiqued. Building on an account of Russia-related forecasting in the twentieth century, analysis of two decades of scenarios reveals uniform accounts which downplay the insights of experts and of social science theory alike
