Selection and orchard testing of antagonists suppressing conidia production of the apple scab pathogen Venturia inaequalis

Apple scab caused by Venturia inaequalis is a major disease in apple production. Epidemics in spring are initiated by ascospores produced on overwintering leaves whereas epidemics during summer are driven by conidia produced on apple leaves by biotrophic mycelium. Fungal colonisers of sporulating colonies of V. inaequalis were isolated and their potential to reduce the production of conidia of V. inaequalis was evaluated on apple seedlings under controlled conditions. The four most effective isolates of the 63 screened isolates were tested subsequently under Dutch orchard conditions in 2006. Repeated applications of conidial suspensions of Cladosporium cladosporioides H39 resulted in an average reduction of conidial production by V. inaequalis of approximately 40%. In 2007, applications of conidial suspensions of C. cladosporioides H39 reduced conidial production by V. inaequalis by 69% on August 6 and by 51% on August 16, but no effect was found on August 20. However, viability of available conidia of C. cladosporioides H39 was low at the end of the experiment. Epiphytic and endophytic colonisation by Cladosporium spp. of leaves treated during the experiment with C. cladosporioides H39 was significantly higher than on control leaves sampled 6 weeks after the last application. It is concluded that C. cladosporioides H39 has promising potential as a biological control agent for apple scab control. More information is needed on the effect of C. cladosporioides H39 on apple scab epidemics as well as on mass production, formulation and shelf life of conidia of the antagonist

Project de Digitale Wichelroede onderzoekt hoe op innovatieve wijze cultuurhistorische kennis beschikbaar gemaakt kan worden via een PDA met GPS en UMTS-transmissie voor de wandelaar of fietser die zijn omgeving fysiek en virtueel wil beleven, en via de Volksmondfunctie op interactieve wijze informatie kan toevoegen. Circa 70% van de deelnemers oordeelt positief over de Digitale Wichelroede. De belangrijkste conclusie is dat een wandel- of fietstocht met de digitale wichelroede een meerwaarde bevat ten opzichte van een “gewone” wandel- of fietstoch

Regulatory Compliance in Multi-Tier Supplier Networks

Over the years, avionics systems have increased in complexity to the point where 1st tier suppliers to an aircraft OEM find it financially beneficial to outsource designs of subsystems to 2nd tier and at times to 3rd tier suppliers. Combined with challenging schedule and budgetary pressures, the environment in which safety-critical systems are being developed introduces new hurdles for regulatory agencies and industry. This new environment of both complex systems and tiered development has raised concerns in the ability of the designers to ensure safety considerations are fully addressed throughout the tier levels. This has also raised questions about the sufficiency of current regulatory guidance to ensure: proper flow down of safety awareness, avionics application understanding at the lower tiers, OEM and 1st tier oversight practices, and capabilities of lower tier suppliers. Therefore, NASA established a research project to address Regulatory Compliance in a Multi-tier Supplier Network. This research was divided into three major study efforts: 1. Describe Modern Multi-tier Avionics Development 2. Identify Current Issues in Achieving Safety and Regulatory Compliance 3. Short-term/Long-term Recommendations Toward Higher Assurance Confidence This report presents our findings of the risks, weaknesses, and our recommendations. It also includes a collection of industry-identified risks, an assessment of guideline weaknesses related to multi-tier development of complex avionics systems, and a postulation of potential modifications to guidelines to close the identified risks and weaknesses

In Europa wordt het landschap steeds belangrijker. Er wordt op allerlei manieren onderzoek gedaan naar wensen die mensen hebben voor de leef- of recreatieomgeving. Vaak in de vorm van (dure) enquêtes. Een nieuwe methode via het principe van ”first give, then ask and save” is in Nederland succesvol toegepast met de website www.daarmoetikzijn.nl. Een Europese versie van de website daarmoetikzijn kan de preferenties van Europeanen voor landschappen onderzoeken. Er is een verkenning uitgevoerd om te onderzoeken welke Europese GIS-data er zijn en of deze data gebruikt mogen worden. Ook is onderzocht of het technisch mogelijk is om met een acceptabele resolutie en tijd een kaartje van Europa te genereren met daarop de weergave van de gepersonaliseerde landschapsvoorkeuren. Er is een demonstratie-applicatie gebouwd met een klein aantal landschapskenmerken. Het blijkt mogelijk te zijn om binnen 3 seconden een kaartje te genereren met een voldoende hoge resolutie

Gelderse stilte?; onderzoek naar de stiltebeleving van recreanten

Via 190 interviews met wandelaars en fietsers is antwoord gekregen op de centrale vraag hoe recreanten stilte beleven in de provincie Gelderland. De interviews zijn in en nabij drie stiltegebieden gehouden. Tijdens het interview is het geluid ter plaatse gemeten. Het blijkt dat hoe hoger het gemiddelde geluidsniveau (Laeq) is, hoe lager de waardering voor het geluid. Jongeren blijken ook kritischer te zijn ten aanzien van de geluidswaardering dan ouderen. Andere factoren spelen geen rol bij de stiltebeleving. Tot circa 40 dB(A) is de waardering goed. Een geluidsniveau dat hoger is dan 50 dB(A) krijgt een zeer lage waardering
