    Spatio-temporal metrics that distinguish play outcomes: A pilot study

    In team invasion sports, tactical behaviour can be examined using spatio-temporal data, i.e. the position of the players at a given time. A review of the spatio-temporal metrics used in team invasion sports performance analysis indicated that thousands of variations of metrics being used. Information about the distribution of metrics' individual effects can inform us of the best variable-selection method. The aim of this pilot study was to estimate the distribution of strong marginal effects of spatio-temporal metrics of field hockey plays. With institutional ethical approval, the Womens’ and Mens’ gold medal games from the EuroHockey 2015 field hockey tournament were recorded. Best, acceptable and worst-case outcomes for plays were described by 1,837 spatio-temporal metrics. Each metric's marginal effects were estimated using Cramér's V, Mutual Information and the I-score. Values for Cramér's V of 0.2 and 0.4 to mark the boundaries of small, moderate and large effects. Less than 1% of metrics show large effects with > 87% of all metrics showing small effects as per the Cramér's V thresholds. These large effect metrics where all within the 98th percentile of Mutual Information values and within the 96th percentile of the I-score values, which supports the Cramér's V distribution of marginal effects. Therefore, according to the recommendations of Tibshirani (1996), univariate variable-selection methods will be the most appropriate for selecting important metrics

    Understanding the effect of seams on the aerodynamics of an association football

    The aerodynamic properties of an association football were measured using a wind tunnel arrangement. A third scale model of a generic football (with seams) was used in addition to a 'mini-football'. As the wind speed was increased, the drag coefficient decreased from 0.5 to 0.2, suggesting a transition from laminar to turbulent behaviour in the boundary layer. For spinning footballs, the Magnus effect was observed and it was found that reverse Magnus effects were possible at low Reynolds numbers. Measurements on spinning smooth spheres found that laminar behaviour led to a high drag coefficient for a large range of Reynolds numbers, and Magnus effects were inconsistent, but generally showed reverse Magnus behaviour at high Reynolds number and spin parameter. Trajectory simulations of free kicks demonstrated that a football that is struck in the centre will follow a near straight trajectory, dipping slightly before reaching the goal, whereas a football that is struck off centre will bend before reaching the goal, but will have a significantly longer flight time. The curving kick simulation was repeated for a smooth ball, which resulted in a longer flight time, due to increased drag, and the ball curving in the opposite direction, due to reverse Magnus effects. The presence of seams was found to encourage turbulent behaviour, resulting in reduced drag and more predictable Magnus behaviour for a conventional football, compared with a smooth ball. © IMechE 2005

    Visual tracking of a GPS target within a FieldLab

    The monitoring and videoing of a user’s movement within a “FieldLab” recreational facility is required to study the effectiveness of innovative equipment designed to increase physical activity. A low cost alternative to current tracking systems based around the Global positioning system (GPS) was trialed for use within the Sheffield FieldLab. This low cost tracking system is based around a typical AndroidTM smartphone, which was used as a wearable tracking sensor. The system was combined with a bespoke video surveillance system, which takes positional data and outputs appropriate camera parameters. In pilot work, participants’ GPS positional data was converted in real time to a pan tilt and zoom value. This allowed the targeted participant to be viewed in the centre of the video stream. Positional data was updated every second, allowing the camera to move and track the participant by keeping them at the centre of the video frame as they moved around the site. The effectiveness of the system was gauged and limitations noted. It was found that the Sony Xperia-S gave the most accurate GPS positional data, out of the three smartphones tested in this study.     Ipsilateral M1 transcranial direct current stimulation increases excitability of the contralateral M1 during an active motor task: Implications for stroke rehabilitation

    IntroductionAnodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) of the primary motor cortex (M1) elicits an increase in cortical excitability that outlasts the period of stimulation. However, little is known about effects of a-tDCS on the contralateral M1 during and after ipsilateral M1 stimulation. Therefore, we investigated the changes in corticospinal excitability and inhibition of the left M1 during and after 20min of a-tDCS to the right M1.Material and methodsEight healthy participants received real (2mA) and SHAM a-tDCS to the right M1 randomized across 2 testing sessions. Single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied to the left M1 to measure changes motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitude from the right extensor carpi radialis (ECR) at 130% of resting and active motor threshold, cortical silent period (CSP) and short-interval cortical inhibition (SICI). Active motor threshold was measured during a wrist extension contraction that was less than 5% of maximal electromyographic activation of the ECR. TMS measurements were recorded at baseline, every 5min for 20min during and 10min after a-tDCS.ResultsThe results showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in left M1 MEP amplitude and reduction in CSP duration during (10 and 15min) and after (immediately and 10min post) a-tDCS to the right M1, only during the active motor task. A significant reduction (P<0.05) in SICI during the active task was also found immediately and 10min post a-tDCS. No significant changes in MEP amplitude, CSP and SICI were observed in the resting or active task during SHAM tDCS.DiscussionThe increase in left M1 MEP amplitude and reduction in CSP and SICI during and after 20min of right M1 a-tDCS is most likely to be attributed to a reduction in interhemispheric inhibition that is modulated by a-tDCS during the performance of an active task. Our findings may have significant implications for stroke rehabilitation whereby the application of a-tDCS on the contralesional M1 during neurorehabilitation of the paretic limb may be beneficial for inducing neuroplasticity of the ipsilesional M1 to improve motor function

    Water Quality Observations from Space: A Review of Critical Issues and Challenges

    Water is the basis of all life on this planet. Yet, approximately one in seven people in the world do not have access to safe water. Water can become unsafe due to contamination by various organic and inorganic compounds due to various natural and anthropogenic processes. Identifying and monitoring water quality changes in space and time remains a challenge, especially when contamination events occur over large geographic areas. This study investigates recent advances in remote sensing that allow us to detect and monitor the unique spectral characteristics of water quality events over large areas. Based on an extensive literature review, we focus on three critical water quality problems as part of this study: algal blooms, acid mine drainage, and suspended solids. We review the advances made in applications of remote sensing in each of these issues, identify the knowledge gaps and limitations of current studies, analyze the existing approaches in the context of global environmental changes, and discuss potential ways to combine multi-sensor methods and different wavelengths to develop improved approaches. Synthesizing the findings of these studies in the context of the three specific tracks will help stakeholders to utilize, share, and embed satellite-derived earth observations for monitoring and tracking the ever-evolving water quality in the earth’s limited freshwater reserves

    Hydrophilic polymer embolism identified in brain tumor specimens following Wada testing: A report of 2 cases

    Hydrophilic polymers are commonly used as coatings on intravascular medical devices. As intravascular pro-cedures continue to increase in frequency, the risk of embolization of this material throughout the body has become evident. These emboli may be discovered incidentally but can result in serious complications includ-ing death. Here, we report the first two cases of hydrophilic polymer embolism (HPE) identified on brain tu-mor resection following Wada testing. One patient experienced multifocal vascular complications and diffuse cerebral edema, while the other had an uneventful postoperative course. Wada testing is frequently per-formed during preoperative planning prior to epilepsy surgery or the resection of tumors in eloquent brain regions. These cases demonstrate the need for increased recognition of this histologic finding to enable fur-ther correlation with clinical outcomes

    What Would I Know About Mercy? Faith and Optimistic Expectancies Among African Americans

    A small body of research has begun to explore the association between faith and optimism among African Americans. However, missing from the extant work is an examination of the extent to which traditional indices of religious commitment work together with beliefs about God to shape optimism. The present study examines the utility of indices of social location, religious commitment (i.e., early and current religious service attendance, subjective religiosity), belief about the quality of one’s relationship with God (i.e., a belief that one is connected to a loving God), and beliefs about being the recipient of divine forgiveness for predicting dispositional optimism among a sample of community residing African American adults (N = 241). Age, subjective religiosity, and organizational religiosity were positively related to optimism in bivariate analyses. Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated a significant association between age, subjective religiosity, and optimism; however, those associations were eliminated once relationship with God and belief in one’s forgiveness by God were entered into the model. Only belief in God’s love predicted optimism in multivariate analyses. Serial mediation analyses revealed that beliefs about the quality of one’s relationship with God and belief in divine forgiveness fully mediated the relationship between subjective religiosity and optimism, but that the relationship is driven largely by relationship with God. Implications of these findings are discussed

    Within and between-day variation and associations of symptoms in Long Covid: intensive longitudinal study

    Background People with Long Covid (Post Covid-19 Condition) describe multiple symptoms which vary between and within individuals over relatively short time intervals. We aimed to describe the real-time associations between different symptoms and between symptoms and physical activity at the individual patient level. Methods and findings Intensive longitudinal study of 82 adults with self-reported Long Covid (median duration 12–18 months). Data collection involved a smartphone app with 5 daily entries over 14 days and continuous wearing of a wrist accelerometer. Data items included 7 symptoms (Visual Analog Scales) and perceived demands in the preceding period (Likert scales). Activity was measured using mean acceleration in the 3-hour periods preceding and following app data entry. Analysis used within-person correlations of symptoms pairs and both pooled and individual symptom networks derived from graphical vector autoregression. App data was suitable for analysis from 74 participants (90%) comprising 4022 entries representing 77.6% of possible entries. Symptoms varied substantially within individuals and were only weakly autocorrelated. The strongest between-subject symptom correlations were of fatigue with pain (partial coefficient 0.5) and cognitive difficulty with light-headedness (0.41). Pooled within-subject correlations showed fatigue correlated with cognitive difficulty (partial coefficient 0.2) pain (0.19) breathlessness (0.15) and light-headedness (0.12) but not anxiety. Cognitive difficulty was correlated with anxiety and light-headedness (partial coefficients 0.16 and 0.17). Individual participant correlation heatmaps and symptom networks showed no clear patterns indicative of distinct phenotypes. Symptoms, including fatigue, were inconsistently correlated with prior or subsequent physical activity: this may reflect adjustment of activity in response to symptoms. Delayed worsening of symptoms after the highest activity peak was observed in 7 participants. Conclusion Symptoms of Long Covid vary within individuals over short time scales, with heterogenous patterns of symptom correlation. The findings are compatible with altered central symptom processing as an additional factor in Long Covid

    Critical contribution of KV1 channels to the regulation of coronary blood flow

    Ion channels in smooth muscle control coronary vascular tone, but the mechanisms require further investigation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional role of KV1 channels on porcine coronary blood flow by using the selective antagonist correolide. KV1 channel gene transcripts were found in porcine coronary arteries, with KCNA5 (encoding KV1.5) being most abundant (P<0.001). Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated KV1.5 protein in the vascular smooth muscle layer of both porcine and human coronary arteries, including microvessels. Whole-cell patch clamp experiments demonstrated significant correolide-sensitive (1–10 µM) current in coronary smooth muscle. In vivo studies included direct intracoronary infusion of vehicle or correolide into a pressure-clamped left anterior descending artery of healthy swine (n=5 in each group) with simultaneous measurement of coronary blood flow. Intracoronary correolide (~0.3–3 µM targeted plasma concentration) had no effect on heart rate or systemic pressure, but reduced coronary blood flow in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05). Dobutamine (0.3–10 µg/kg/min) elicited coronary metabolic vasodilation and intracoronary correolide (3 µM) significantly reduced coronary blood flow at any given level of myocardial oxygen consumption (P<0.001). Coronary artery occlusions (15 s) elicited reactive hyperemia and correolide (3 µM) reduced the flow volume repayment by approximately 30% (P<0.05). Taken together, these data support a major role for KV1 channels in modulating baseline coronary vascular tone and perhaps vasodilation in response to increased metabolism and transient ischemia
