A dictionary of the Lakalai (Nakanai) language of New Britain, Papua New Guinea
Lakalai (Nakanai) is an Austronesian language of Papua New Guinea spoken in 42 coastal
and hinterland villages in five dialects spread along the coastal strip and hinterland of Kimbe
Bay, from Cape Hoskins in West New Britain Province, to Bialla in East New Britain
Province. This dictionary represents the Bileki dialect spoken with minor variations in 19
villages in the eastern part of the Hoskins Peninsula.
The work stems from a project of anthropological research begun in 1954 by a small team
from the University of Pennsylvania under the leadership of Ward H. Goodenough. The
Lakalai-English dictionary is principally the work of the late Ann Chowning based on seven
field trips between 1954 and 1992, during which she lived in Galilo village.
In the last few decades the way of life of the Lakalai people has undergone many
changes; this dictionary provides a valuable record of cultural practices and beliefs as they
were in the 1950s and 1960s. With about 8,000 headwords and 10,000 distinct sense units, it
is one of the largest dictionaries of any Austronesian language of western Melanesia. At Ann
Chowning’s request, Wolfgang Sperlich and Andrew Pawley in 2012-2014 compiled an
English-Lakalai reversal, which contains over 8,000 main entries and sub-entries
Theory of Kondo lattices and its application to high-temperature superconductivity and pseudo-gaps in cuprate oxides
A theory of Kondo lattices is developed for the t-J model on a square
lattice. The spin susceptibility is described in a form consistent with a
physical picture of Kondo lattices: Local spin fluctuations at different sites
interact with each other by a bare intersite exchange interaction, which is
mainly composed of two terms such as the superexchange interaction, which
arises from the virtual exchange of spin-channel pair excitations of electrons
across the Mott-Hubbard gap, and an exchange interaction arising from that of
Gutzwiller's quasi-particles. The bare exchange interaction is enhanced by
intersite spin fluctuations developed because of itself. The enhanced exchange
interaction is responsible for the development of superconducting fluctuations
as well as the Cooper pairing between Gutzwiller's quasi-particles. On the
basis of the microscopic theory, we develop a phenomenological theory of
low-temperature superconductivity and pseudo-gaps in the under-doped region as
well as high-temperature superconductivity in the optimal-doped region.
Anisotropic pseudo-gaps open mainly because of d\gamma-wave superconducting
low-energy fluctuations: Quasi-particle spectra around (\pm\pi/a,0) and
(0,\pm\pi/a), with a the lattice constant, or X points at the chemical
potential are swept away by strong inelastic scatterings, and quasi-particles
are well defined only around (\pm\pi/2a,\pm\pi/2a) on the Fermi surface or
line. As temperatures decrease in the vicinity of superconducting critical
temperatures, pseudo-gaps become smaller and the well-defined region is
extending toward X points. The condensation of d\gamma-wave Cooper pairs
eventually occurs at low enough temperatures when the pair breaking by
inelastic scatterings becomes small enough.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure
Global nomads, cultural chameleons, strange ones or immigrants? An exploration of Third Culture Kid terminology with reference to the United Arab Emirates
© The Author(s) 2019. The term ‘Third Culture Kid’ (TCK) is commonly used to denote children living in a host culture other than their passport culture during their developmental years. However, its meaning in relation to other terminology referring to a similar concept is a source of interest for many stakeholders. This paper opens up opportunities for further exploring and critiquing the definition of TCK, and opening this up to case studies within the context of the United Arab Emirates and more widely. It is critical to clarify the terminology in light of unprecedented levels of international migration throughout the world. This paper reviews the meaning of culture in relation to TCKs, and explores the meaning of the TCK concept as well as a number of other terms used as alternatives to TCK. A contextualization of the literature follows in relation to the researchers’ own lived experiences in the United Arab Emirates. The term TCK can be seen as part of the general stock of theoretical concepts. This paper acknowledges that it cannot catch all nuances of migrant children in the global context
Multidimensional Atomic Force Microscopy: A Versatile Novel Technology for Nanopharmacology Research
Nanotechnology is giving us a glimpse into a nascent field of nanopharmacology that deals with pharmacological phenomena at molecular scale. This review presents our perspective on the use of scanning probe microscopy techniques with special emphasis to multidimensional atomic force microscopy (m-AFM) to explore this new field with a particular emphasis to define targets, design therapeutics, and track outcomes of molecular-scale pharmacological interactions. The approach will be to first discuss operating principles of m-AFM and provide representative examples of studies to understand human health and disease at the molecular level and then to address different strategies in defining target macromolecules, screening potential drug candidates, developing and characterizing of drug delivery systems, and monitoring target–drug interactions. Finally, we will discuss some future directions including AFM tip-based parallel sensors integrated with other high-throughput technologies which could be a powerful platform for drug discovery
Digital methods for ethnography: analytical concepts for ethnographers exploring social media environments
The aim of this article is to introduce some analytical concepts suitable for ethnographers dealing with social media environments. As a result of the growth of social media, the Internet structure has become a very complex, fluid, and fragmented space. Within this space, it is not always possible to consider the 'classical' online community as the privileged field site for the ethnographer, in which s/he immerses him/herself. Differently, taking inspiration from some methodological principles of the Digital Methods paradigm, I suggest that the main task for the ethnographer moving across social media environments should not be exclusively that of identifying an online community to delve into but of mapping the practices through which Internet users and digital devices structure social formations around a focal object (e.g., a brand). In order to support the ethnographer in the mapping of social formations within social media environments, I propose five analytical concepts: community, public, crowd, self-presentation as a tool, and user as a device
Biodiversity in urban gardens: assessing the accuracy of citizen science data on garden hedgehogs
Urban gardens provide a rich habitat for species that are declining in rural areas. However, collecting data in gardens can be logistically-challenging, time-consuming and intrusive to residents. This study examines the potential of citizen scientists to record hedgehog sightings and collect habitat data within their own gardens using an online questionnaire. Focussing on a charismatic species meant that the number of responses was high (516 responses were obtained in 6 weeks, with a ~ 50:50% split between gardens
with and without hedgehog sightings). While many factors commonly thought to influence hedgehog
presence (e.g. compost heaps) were present in many hedgehog-frequented gardens, they were not discriminatory as they were also found in gardens where hedgehogs were not seen. Respondents were most likely to have seen hedgehogs in their garden if they had also seen hedgehogs elsewhere in their neighbourhood. However, primary fieldwork using hedgehog ‘footprint tunnels’ showed that hedgehogs were found to be just as prevalent in gardens in which hedgehogs had previously been reported as gardens where they had not been reported. Combining these results indicates that hedgehogs may be more common in urban and semi-urban gardens than previously believed, and that casual volunteer records of hedgehogs may be influenced more by the observer than by habitat preferences of the animal. When verified, volunteer records can provide useful information, but care is needed in interpreting these data
Dimethyl fumarate in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) inhibits inflammasome-mediated inflammation and has been proposed as a treatment for patients hospitalised with COVID-19. This randomised, controlled, open-label platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]), is assessing multiple treatments in patients hospitalised for COVID-19 (NCT04381936, ISRCTN50189673). In this assessment of DMF performed at 27 UK hospitals, adults were randomly allocated (1:1) to either usual standard of care alone or usual standard of care plus DMF. The primary outcome was clinical status on day 5 measured on a seven-point ordinal scale. Secondary outcomes were time to sustained improvement in clinical status, time to discharge, day 5 peripheral blood oxygenation, day 5 C-reactive protein, and improvement in day 10 clinical status. Between 2 March 2021 and 18 November 2021, 713 patients were enroled in the DMF evaluation, of whom 356 were randomly allocated to receive usual care plus DMF, and 357 to usual care alone. 95% of patients received corticosteroids as part of routine care. There was no evidence of a beneficial effect of DMF on clinical status at day 5 (common odds ratio of unfavourable outcome 1.12; 95% CI 0.86-1.47; p = 0.40).
