    Description of an experimental (hydrogen peroxide) rocket system and its use in measuring aileron and rudder effectiveness of a light airplane

    A hydrogen peroxide fueled rocket system, which is to be used as a research tool in flight studies of stall and spin maneuvers, was installed on a light, four place general aviation airplane. The pilot controlled rocket system produces moments about either the roll or the yaw body axis to augment or oppose the aerodynamic forces and inertial moments acting on the airplane during various flight maneuvers, including the spin. These controlled moments of a known magnitude can be used in various ways to help analyze and interpret the importance of the various factors which influence airplane maneuvers. The rocket system and its installation in the airplane are described, and the results of flight rests used to measure rudder and aileron effectiveness at airspeeds above the stall are presented. These tests also serve to demonstrate the operational readiness of the rocket system for future research operations

    Preparing Social Workers to Confront Social Injustice and Oppression: Evaluating the Role of Social Work Education

    Since the presidential election of 2016, bias-related incidents, hate-filled rhetoric, and extremist violence have been increasing in the United States. Because social workers are often working with individuals and communities affected by these incidents, practitioners may have increasing responsibility to confront social injustice and oppression. However, limited evidence on the preparedness of social workers to assume this responsibility, particularly among those who are still students, exists. To address this gap, this study used focus group and survey data from the Diversity and Oppression Scale to explore the preparedness of MSW students (N = 22) to confront oppression. Six themes were identified as integral to student experiences in their programs: (1) social worker responsibility to confront oppression, (2) use of dominant group discourse on oppression, (3) variation in faculty preparation and comfort, (4) a focus on knowledge of oppression versus skills and process, (5) role of personal responsibility and experience in student preparation, and (6) strategies to increase student preparedness to confront oppression. Factors identified to enhance students' level of preparedness include faculty opportunities for development, changes to the explicit and implicit curriculum, and creating a formalized way to integrate topics on oppression and diversity into all facets of the curriculum

    The K→(ππ)I=2K\to(\pi\pi)_{I=2} Decay Amplitude from Lattice QCD

    We report on the first realistic \emph{ab initio} calculation of a hadronic weak decay, that of the amplitude A2A_2 for a kaon to decay into two \pi-mesons with isospin 2. We find ReA2=(1.436±0.063stat±0.258syst) 10−8 GeVA_2=(1.436\pm 0.063_{\textrm{stat}}\pm 0.258_{\textrm{syst}})\,10^{-8}\,\textrm{GeV} in good agreement with the experimental result and for the hitherto unknown imaginary part we find {Im} A2=−(6.83±0.51stat±1.30syst) 10−13 GeV\,A_2=-(6.83 \pm 0.51_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 1.30_{\textrm{syst}})\,10^{-13}\,{\rm GeV}. Moreover combining our result for Im\,A2A_2 with experimental values of Re\,A2A_2, Re\,A0A_0 and ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon, we obtain the following value for the unknown ratio Im\,A0A_0/Re\,A0A_0 within the Standard Model: Im A0/Re A0=−1.63(19)stat(20)syst×10−4\mathrm{Im}\,A_0/\mathrm{Re}\,A_0=-1.63(19)_{\mathrm{stat}}(20)_{\mathrm{syst}}\times10^{-4}. One consequence of these results is that the contribution from Im\,A2A_2 to the direct CP violation parameter ϵ′\epsilon^{\prime} (the so-called Electroweak Penguin, EWP, contribution) is Re(ϵ′/ϵ)EWP=−(6.52±0.49stat±1.24syst)×10−4(\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon)_{\mathrm{EWP}} = -(6.52 \pm 0.49_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 1.24_{\textrm{syst}}) \times 10^{-4}. We explain why this calculation of A2A_2 represents a major milestone for lattice QCD and discuss the exciting prospects for a full quantitative understanding of CP-violation in kaon decays.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    On the Nature of Singularities in Plane Symmetric Scalar Field Cosmologies

    The nature of the initial singularity in spatially compact plane symmetric scalar field cosmologies is investigated. It is shown that this singularity is crushing and velocity dominated and that the Kretschmann scalar diverges uniformly as it is approached. The last fact means in particular that a maximal globally hyperbolic spacetime in this class cannot be extended towards the past through a Cauchy horizon. A subclass of these spacetimes is identified for which the singularity is isotropic.Comment: 7 pages, MPA-AR-94-

    Lattice determination of the K→(ππ)I=2K \to (\pi\pi)_{I=2} Decay Amplitude A2A_2

    We describe the computation of the amplitude A_2 for a kaon to decay into two pions with isospin I=2. The results presented in the letter Phys.Rev.Lett. 108 (2012) 141601 from an analysis of 63 gluon configurations are updated to 146 configurations giving ReA2=1.381(46)stat(258)syst10−8A_2=1.381(46)_{\textrm{stat}}(258)_{\textrm{syst}} 10^{-8} GeV and ImA2=−6.54(46)stat(120)syst10−13A_2=-6.54(46)_{\textrm{stat}}(120)_{\textrm{syst}}10^{-13} GeV. ReA2A_2 is in good agreement with the experimental result, whereas the value of ImA2A_2 was hitherto unknown. We are also working towards a direct computation of the K→(ππ)I=0K\to(\pi\pi)_{I=0} amplitude A0A_0 but, within the standard model, our result for ImA2A_2 can be combined with the experimental results for ReA0A_0, ReA2A_2 and ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon to give ImA0/A_0/ReA0=−1.61(28)×10−4A_0= -1.61(28)\times 10^{-4} . Our result for Im\,A2A_2 implies that the electroweak penguin (EWP) contribution to ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon is Re(ϵ′/ϵ)EWP=−(6.25±0.44stat±1.19syst)×10−4(\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon)_{\mathrm{EWP}} = -(6.25 \pm 0.44_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 1.19_{\textrm{syst}}) \times 10^{-4}.Comment: 59 pages, 11 figure

    Opening the Rome-Southampton window for operator mixing matrices

    We show that the running of operators which mix under renormalization can be computed fully non-perturbatively as a product of continuum step scaling matrices. These step scaling matrices are obtained by taking the "ratio" of Z matrices computed at different energies in an RI-MOM type scheme for which twisted boundary conditions are an essential ingredient. Our method allows us to relax the bounds of the Rome-Southampton window. We also explain why such a method is important in view of the light quark physics program of the RBC-UKQCD collaborations. To illustrate our method, using n_f=2+1 domain-wall fermions, we compute the non-perturbative running matrix of four-quark operators needed in K->pipi decay and neutral kaon mixing.     Textiles as Material Gestalt: Cloth as a Catalyst in the Co-designing Process

    Textiles is the common language within Emotional Fit, a collaborative research project investigating a person-centred, sustainable approach to fashion for an ageing female demographic (55+). Through the co-designing of a collection of research tools, textiles have acted as a material gestalt for exploring our research participants' identities by tracing their embodied knowledge of fashionable dress. The methodology merges Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, co-design and a simultaneous approach to textile and garment design. Based on an enhanced understanding of our participants textile preferences, particular fabric qualities have catalysed silhouettes, through live draping and geometric pattern cutting to accommodate multiple body shapes and customisation. Printedtextiles have also been digitally crafted in response to the contours of the garment and body and personal narratives of wear. Sensorial and tactile interactions have informed the engineering and scaling of patterns within zero-waste volumes. The article considers the functional and aesthetic role of textiles

    KK to ππ\pi\pi Decay amplitudes from Lattice QCD

    We report a direct lattice calculation of the KK to ππ\pi\pi decay matrix elements for both the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 and 3/2 amplitudes A0A_0 and A2A_2 on 2+1 flavor, domain wall fermion, 163×32×1616^3\times32\times16 lattices. This is a complete calculation in which all contractions for the required ten, four-quark operators are evaluated, including the disconnected graphs in which no quark line connects the initial kaon and final two-pion states. These lattice operators are non-perturbatively renormalized using the Rome-Southampton method and the quadratic divergences are studied and removed. This is an important but notoriously difficult calculation, requiring high statistics on a large volume. In this paper we take a major step towards the computation of the physical K→ππK\to\pi\pi amplitudes by performing a complete calculation at unphysical kinematics with pions of mass 422\,MeV at rest in the kaon rest frame. With this simplification we are able to resolve Re(A0)(A_0) from zero for the first time, with a 25% statistical error and can develop and evaluate methods for computing the complete, complex amplitude A0A_0, a calculation central to understanding the Δ=1/2\Delta =1/2 rule and testing the standard model of CP violation in the kaon system.Comment: 40 pages, 12 figure
