Tourism Dependency and its Correlation to Selected Socioeconomic Indicators in Utah
This paper investigates the relationship between tourism and well being, or quality-of-life, within eighteen counties in Utah. To evaluate the relationship, comparisons of the counties\u27 differing levels of tourism versus their levels of welfare are necessary. To make these comparisons, three basic steps were followed. First, a social ordering model was derived. The proposed social ordering model was based upon Maslow\u27s theory of the hierarchy of human needs. By utilizing his theory, both economic and noneconomic indicators were identified, and a basis was provided upon which to judge the differing positions of well-being. Factor analysis was applied to this model in order to aggregate the indicators and derive a single quality-of-life index. Second, measurement of tourism was developed. A direct measurement of the level of tourist activity was not available. An indirect indicator of tourism was estimated by taking the proportion of total gross taxable revenue earned by eating and drinking establishments and taxable room sales. The derived indirect variable was more reflective of comparative tourism dependency levels than of the actual level of tourism. Therefore, the variable was renamed tourism dependency. Third, the correlation between quality-of-life and tourism dependency was calculated. A Pearson correlation coefficient test was performed from which initial results suggested a potentially strong negative relationship between the particular qualifiers of well-being used here and tourism. It was apparent that thE two variables that could be defined by certain available indicators were not perfect measurements of the proposed variables, but aspects or components of the desired variables. Each reflected certain attributes of the proposed variables, but not the total concept. A possible explanation for the strong inverse relationship between the qualifiers of quality of life and tourism in this study may be each county\u27s potential for economic diversification. Other studies have shown that areas that are dependent upon a single resource may experience higher levels of economic, demographic, and social instability as compared to those areas with a more diverse economic base. These factors, which in this model would lead to lower values for the calculated quality-of- life indicator in those counties, were estimated to be more tourist dependent

PEN as self-vetoing structural Material
Polyethylene Naphtalate (PEN) is a mechanically very favorable polymer.
Earlier it was found that thin foils made from PEN can have very high
radio-purity compared to other commercially available foils. In fact, PEN is
already in use for low background signal transmission applications (cables).
Recently it has been realized that PEN also has favorable scintillating
properties. In combination, this makes PEN a very promising candidate as a
self-vetoing structural material in low background experiments. Components
instrumented with light detectors could be built from PEN. This includes
detector holders, detector containments, signal transmission links, etc. The
current R\&D towards qualification of PEN as a self-vetoing low background

Overview on spectral line source finding and visualisation
Here I will outline successes and challenges for finding spectral line
sources in large data cubes that are dominated by noise. This is a 3D challenge
as the sources we wish to catalog are spread over several spatial pixels and
spectral channels. While 2D searches can be applied, e.g., channel by channel,
optimal searches take into account the 3-dimensional nature of the sources. In
this overview I will focus on HI 21-cm spectral line source detection in
extragalactic surveys, in particular HIPASS, the "HI Parkes All-Sky Survey" and
WALLABY, the "ASKAP HI All-Sky Survey". I use the original HIPASS data to
highlight the diversity of spectral signatures of galaxies and gaseous clouds,
both in emission and absorption. Among others, I report the discovery of a 680
km/s wide HI absorption trough in the megamaser galaxy NGC 5793. Issues such as
source confusion and baseline ripples, typically encountered in single-dish HI
surveys, are much reduced in interferometric HI surveys. Several large HI
emission and absorption surveys are planned for the Australian Square Kilometre
Array Pathfinder (ASKAP): here we focus on WALLABY, the 21-cm survey of the sky
(Dec < +30 degr; z < 0.26) which will take about one year of observing time
with ASKAP. Novel phased array feeds ("radio cameras") will provide 30 square
degrees instantaneous field-of-view. WALLABY is expected to detect more than
500 000 galaxies, unveil their large-scale structures and cosmological
parameters, detect their extended, low-surface brightness disks as well as gas
streams and filaments between galaxies. It is a precursor for future HI surveys
with SKA Phase I and II, exploring galaxy formation and evolution. The
compilation of highly reliable and complete source catalogs will require
sophisticated source-finding algorithms as well as accurate source

Contrasting Pressure Effects in Sr2VFeAsO3 and Sr2ScFePO3
We report the resistivity measurements under pressure of two Fe-based
superconductors with a thick perovskite oxide layer, Sr2VFeAsO3 and Sr2ScFePO3.
The superconducting transition temperature Tc of Sr2VFeAsO3 markedly increases
with increasing pressure. Its onset value, which was Tc{onset}=36.4 K at
ambient pressure, increases to Tc{onset}=46.0 K at ~4 GPa, ensuring the
potential of the "21113" system as a high-Tc material. However, the
superconductivity of Sr2ScFePO3 is strongly suppressed under pressure. The
Tc{onset} of ~16 K decreases to ~5 K at ~4 GPa, and the zero-resistance state
is almost lost. We discuss the factor that induces this contrasting pressure

Novel SGCE mutation in a patient with myoclonus-dystonia: A case report
OBJECTIVES: Characterize the presentation, workup, and management of
METHODS: A woman with myoclonus and dystonia was identified based on clinical history and physical examination. Workup was conducted to determine the cause of her symptoms, including whole-exome sequencing. Myoclonus-dystonia is associated with more than 100 distinct mutations in MYC/DYT
RESULTS: Childhood onset myoclonus and worsening dystonia with age were identified in a young woman. She underwent screening for common causes of twitching movements, followed by whole-exome sequencing which identified a de novo novel variant in the
DISCUSSION: Myoclonus-dystonia should be considered in patients with symptoms of head and upper extremity myoclonus early in life, especially with co-occurring dystonia, even in the absence of a family history of similar symptoms. Diagnosis of this condition should take place using sequencing, as new mutations continue to be discovered
Cyclosporine a Alters Expression of Renal Micrornas: New Insights into Calcineurin Inhibitor Nephrotoxicity
Calcineurin inhibitors are powerful immunosuppressants that revolutionized organ transplantation. However, non-immune effects of the calcineurin inhibitor, such as cyclosporine A (CsA), have significantly hindered their use. Specifically, nephrotoxicity, which is associated with tubulointerstitial fibrosis, inflammation, and podocyte damage, affects up to half of all transplant patients. Calcineurin is involved in many aspects of kidney development and function; therefore, mechanisms of CsA-induced nephrotoxicity are complex and not yet fully understood. MicroRNAs are short non-coding RNAs that regulate protein-coding RNA expression through post-translational repression of target messenger RNAs. MicroRNA dysregulation is known to be involved in kidney diseases including fibrosis. In this study, we compared the renal microRNA expression profiles between mice that received CsA (20 mg/kg) or vehicle daily for six weeks. The results demonstrate that CsA induces significant changes in renal microRNA expression profile. We used combined criteria of False Discovery Rate (≤0.1), fold change (≥2) and median signal strength (≥50) and identified 76 differencially expressed microRNAs. This approach identified microRNAs previously linked to renal fibrosis that includes let-7d, miR-21, miR-29, miR-30, miR-130, miR-192, and miR-200 as well as microRNAs that have not been reported to be related to nephrotoxicity or immunosuppression. Pathway analysis of microRNA/mRNA changes highlights the Wnt, TGF-β, mTOR, and VEGF pathways. The mRNA expression profiles were compared in the same samples. The change of mRNA and microRNA profiles showed close correlations. To validate that the observed microRNA and mRNA expression level changes in mice kidney tissue were directly related to CsA treatment, the expression change induced by CsA treatment of three microRNAs (miR-21, miR-186, and miR-709) and three mRNAs (BMPR1a, SMURF1 and SMAD7) were compared in HEK293 cell line. A similar trend of expression level change was induced by CsA treatment in all selected microRNAs and mRNAs in the in vitro cell model. These data provide a roadmap for future work to study the role of the known and novel candidate microRNAs in the mechanism of nephrotoxicity and their further therapeutic potential
Nutritional Intervention Restores Muscle but Not Kidney Phenotypes in Adult Calcineurin Aα Null Mice
Mice lacking the α isoform of the catalytic subunit of calcineurin (CnAα) were first reported in 1996 and have been an important model to understand the role of calcineurin in the brain, immune system, bones, muscle, and kidney. Research using the mice has been limited, however, by failure to thrive and early lethality of most null pups. Work in our laboratory led to the rescue of CnAα-/- mice by supplemental feeding to compensate for a defect in salivary enzyme secretion. The data revealed that, without intervention, knockout mice suffer from severe caloric restriction. Since nutritional deprivation is known to significantly alter development, it is imperative that previous conclusions based on CnAα-/- mice are revisited to determine which aspects of the phenotype were attributable to caloric restriction versus a direct role for CnAα. In this study, we find that defects in renal development and function persist in adult CnAα-/- mice including a significant decrease in glomerular filtration rate and an increase in blood urea nitrogen levels. These data indicate that impaired renal development we previously reported was not due to caloric restriction but rather a specific role for CnAα in renal development and function. In contrast, we find that rather than being hypoglycemic, rescued mice are mildly hyperglycemic and insulin resistant. Examination of muscle fiber types shows that previously reported reductions in type I muscle fibers are no longer evident in rescued null mice. Rather, loss of CnAα likely alters insulin response due to a reduction in insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS2) expression and signaling in muscle. This study illustrates the importance of re-examining the phenotypes of CnAα-/- mice and the advances that are now possible with the use of adult, rescued knockout animals
Pheochromocytoma in a Twelve-Year-Old Girl with SDHB-Related Hereditary Paraganglioma-Pheochromocytoma Syndrome
A twelve-year-old girl presented with a history of several weeks of worsening headaches accompanied by flushing and diaphoresis. The discovery of markedly elevated blood pressure and tachycardia led the child\u27s pediatrician to consider the diagnosis of a catecholamine-secreting tumor, and an abdominal CT scan confirmed the presence of a pheochromocytoma. The patient was found to have a mutation in the succinyl dehydrogenase B (SDHB) gene, which is causative for SDHB-related hereditary paraganglioma-pheochromocytoma syndrome. Herein, we describe her presentation and medical management and discuss the clinical implications of SDHB deficiency
Trends in Hospital Admissions Due to Antidepressant-Related Adverse Drug Events from 2001 to 2011 in the U.S.
BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder and the fourth leading cause of disability in the world as per the World Health Organization. Use of antidepressants can lead to adverse drug events (ADEs), defined as any injury resulting from medication use. This study aimed to examine changes in hospital admissions due to antidepressant-related ADEs (ArADEs) among different socio-demographic groups and changes in lengths of stay (LOS) and hospital charges in ArADE admissions from 2001 to 2011.
METHODS: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database was used. ArADE admissions in different socio-demographic groups were examined including characteristics such as age, gender, rural/urban, and income. LOS and hospital charges for ArADE cases were compared between 2001 and 2011. Chi-square test and t test were used for statistical analyses.
RESULTS: There were 17,375 and 20,588 ArADE related admissions in 2001 and 2011, respectively. There was a 17.6% increase among the group of 18 to 64 years old and a 64.8% increase among the group of 65 years or older while the other age groups experienced decreased admission rates. Males and females had similar increases. Patients from the lower income areas experienced a two-fold increase while those from the higher income areas experienced a decrease. The mean LOS for all ArADE related admissions increased from 2.18 to 2.81 days and mean hospital charges increased from 21,572.5.
CONCLUSIONS: There was an increase in ArADE hospital admissions. The greater increase in ArADE admissions among elderly, urban or low-income patients should be noted and addressed by practitioners and policy makers. The large increase in hospital charges needs further research
