Automatic image creation via artistic composition principles
Journal ArticleMethods for choosing image parameters in both art and computer graphics are currently subjective. The choice of parameters results in images of varying quality. One aspect of image quality is the composition of the image. While the principles underlying composition are somewhat subjective, a portion of the compositional rules can be approximated quantitatively. We use this quantification to design an objective function and use numerical optimization to automatically arrive at images with acceptable composition. For a given subject or scene, the optimization procedure chooses format, view point, layout, and lighting parameters. The resulting image is determined by characteristics the objective function rewards. We show several images generated using such optimization, and argue that these images have good composition
Direct measurement of neutrons induced in lead by cosmic muons at a shallow underground site
Neutron production in lead by cosmic muons has been studied with a Gadolinium
doped liquid scintillator detector. The detector was installed next to the
Muon-Induced Neutron Indirect Detection EXperiment (MINIDEX), permanently
located in the T\"ubingen shallow underground laboratory where the mean muon
energy is approximately 7 GeV. The MINIDEX plastic scintillators were used to
tag muons; the neutrons were detected through neutron capture and
neutron-induced nuclear recoil signals in the liquid scintillator detector.
Results on the rates of observed neutron captures and nuclear recoils are
presented and compared to predictions from GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3. The
predicted rates are significantly too low for both versions of GEANT4. For
neutron capture events, the observation exceeds the predictions by factors of and for GEANT4-9.6
and GEANT4-10.3, respectively. For neutron nuclear recoil events, which require
neutron energies above approximately 5 MeV, the factors are even larger, and , respectively.
Also presented is the first statistically significant measurement of the
spectrum of neutrons induced by cosmic muons in lead between 5 and 40 MeV. It
was obtained by unfolding the nuclear recoil spectrum. The observed neutron
spectrum is harder than predicted by GEANT4. An investigation of the
distribution of the time difference between muon tags and nuclear recoil
signals confirms the validity of the unfolding procedure and shows that GEANT4
cannot properly describe the time distribution of nuclear recoil events. In
general, the description of the data is worse for GEANT4-10.3 than for
GEANT4-9.6.Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures, 4 table
Temperature Dependence of the Electron-Drift Anisotropy and Implications for the Electron-Drift Model
The electron drift in germanium detectors is modeled making many assumptions.
Confronted with data, these assumptions have to be revisited. The temperature
dependence of the drift of electrons was studied in detail for an n-type
segmented point-contact germanium detector. The detector was mounted in a
temperature controlled, electrically cooled cryostat. Surface events were
induced with collimated 81 keV photons from a Ba source. A detailed
analysis of the rise time of pulses collected in surface scans, performed at
different temperatures, is presented. The longitudinal anisotropy of the
electron drift decreases with rising temperature. A new approach, making use of
designated rise-time windows determined by simulations using
SolidStateDetectors.jl, was used to isolate the longitudinal drift of electrons
along different axes to quantify this observation. The measured temperature
dependence of the longitudinal drift velocities combined with the standard
electron drift model as widely used in relevant simulation packages results in
unphysical predictions. A first suggestion to modify the electron-drift model
is motivated and described. The results of a first implementation of the
modified model in SolidStateDetectors.jl are shown. They describe the data
reasonably well. A general review of the model and the standard input values
for mobilities is suggested
An OSIRIS study of the gas kinematics in a sample of UV-selected galaxies: Evidence of "Hot and Bothered" starbursts in the local Universe
We present data from Integral Field Spectroscopy for 3 supercompact
UV-Luminous Galaxies (ScUVLGs). As nearby (z~0.2), compact (R_50~1-2 kpc),
bright Paschen-alpha sources, with unusually high star formation rates
(SFR=3-100 M_sun/yr), ScUVLGs are an ideal population for studying detailed
kinematics and dynamics in actively star-forming galaxies. In addition, ScUVLGs
appear to be excellent analogs to high redshift Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and
our results may offer additional insight into the dynamics of LBGs. Previous
work by our team has shown that the morphologies of these galaxies exhibit
tidal features and companions, and in this study we find that the dynamics of
ScUVLGs are dominated by disturbed kinematics of the emission line gas--
suggestive that these galaxies have undergone recent feedback, interactions or
mergers. While 2 of the 3 galaxies do display rotation, v/sigma < 1 --
suggesting dispersion dominated kinematics rather than smooth rotation. We also
simulate how these observations would appear at z~2. Lower resolution and loss
of low surface brightness features causes some apparent discrepancies between
the low-z (observed) and high-z (simulated) interpretations and quantitatively
gives different values for v/sigma, yet simulations of these low-z analogs
manage to detect the brightest regions well and resemble actual high-z

Can hedgerow management mitigate the impacts of predation on songbird nest survival?
Nest predators can have significant impacts on songbird reproductive success. These impacts may be amplified by habitat simplification and here we test whether sympathetic management of farmland hedgerows can reduce nest depredation, especially by corvids. We test whether songbirds select nest sites according to structural features of hedgerows (including nest visibility and accessibility), and whether these features influence nest predation risk. Songbirds selected nesting sites affording higher vegetation cover above the nest, increased visibility on the nest-side of the hedgerow and reduced visibility on the far side of the hedge. Nest survival was unrelated to corvid abundance and only weakly related (at the egg stage) to corvid nest proximity. Nest survival at the chick stage was higher where vegetation structure restricted access to corvid-sized predators (averaging 0.78 vs. 0.53), and at nests close to potential vantage points. Overall nest survival was sensitive to hedgerow structure (accessibility) particularly at low exposure to corvid predation, while the overall impact of corvid exposure was dependent on the relationship involving proximity to vantage points. Nest survival over the chick stage was much higher (0.67) in stock-proof, trimmed and mechanically cut hedgerows, (which tended to provide lower side visibility and accessibility) than in recently laid, remnant or leggy hedgerows (0.18). Long-term reductions in the management of British hedgerows may therefore be exposing nesting songbirds to increased predation risk. We recommend regular rotational cutting of hedgerows to maintain a dense woody structure and thereby reduce songbird nest predation
Modeling of GERDA Phase II data
The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso underground
laboratory (LNGS) of INFN is searching for neutrinoless double-beta
() decay of Ge. The technological challenge of GERDA is
to operate in a "background-free" regime in the region of interest (ROI) after
analysis cuts for the full 100kgyr target exposure of the
experiment. A careful modeling and decomposition of the full-range energy
spectrum is essential to predict the shape and composition of events in the ROI
around for the search, to extract a precise
measurement of the half-life of the double-beta decay mode with neutrinos
() and in order to identify the location of residual
impurities. The latter will permit future experiments to build strategies in
order to further lower the background and achieve even better sensitivities. In
this article the background decomposition prior to analysis cuts is presented
for GERDA Phase II. The background model fit yields a flat spectrum in the ROI
with a background index (BI) of cts/(kgkeVyr) for the enriched BEGe data set and
cts/(kgkeVyr) for the
enriched coaxial data set. These values are similar to the one of Gerda Phase I
despite a much larger number of detectors and hence radioactive hardware
components

Modeling of GERDA Phase II data

Duration of androgen deprivation therapy with postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer: a comparison of long-course versus short-course androgen deprivation therapy in the RADICALS-HD randomised trial
Background
Previous evidence supports androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with primary radiotherapy as initial treatment for intermediate-risk and high-risk localised prostate cancer. However, the use and optimal duration of ADT with postoperative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy remains uncertain.
Methods
RADICALS-HD was a randomised controlled trial of ADT duration within the RADICALS protocol. Here, we report on the comparison of short-course versus long-course ADT. Key eligibility criteria were indication for radiotherapy after previous radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, prostate-specific antigen less than 5 ng/mL, absence of metastatic disease, and written consent. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to add 6 months of ADT (short-course ADT) or 24 months of ADT (long-course ADT) to radiotherapy, using subcutaneous gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue (monthly in the short-course ADT group and 3-monthly in the long-course ADT group), daily oral bicalutamide monotherapy 150 mg, or monthly subcutaneous degarelix. Randomisation was done centrally through minimisation with a random element, stratified by Gleason score, positive margins, radiotherapy timing, planned radiotherapy schedule, and planned type of ADT, in a computerised system. The allocated treatment was not masked. The primary outcome measure was metastasis-free survival, defined as metastasis arising from prostate cancer or death from any cause. The comparison had more than 80% power with two-sided α of 5% to detect an absolute increase in 10-year metastasis-free survival from 75% to 81% (hazard ratio [HR] 0·72). Findings
Between Jan 30, 2008, and July 7, 2015, 1523 patients (median age 65 years, IQR 60–69) were randomly assigned to receive short-course ADT (n=761) or long-course ADT (n=762) in addition to postoperative radiotherapy at 138 centres in Canada, Denmark, Ireland, and the UK. With a median follow-up of 8·9 years (7·0–10·0), 313 metastasis-free survival events were reported overall (174 in the short-course ADT group and 139 in the long-course ADT group; HR 0·773 [95% CI 0·612–0·975]; p=0·029). 10-year metastasis-free survival was 71·9% (95% CI 67·6–75·7) in the short-course ADT group and 78·1% (74·2–81·5) in the long-course ADT group. Toxicity of grade 3 or higher was reported for 105 (14%) of 753 participants in the short-course ADT group and 142 (19%) of 757 participants in the long-course ADT group (p=0·025), with no treatment-related deaths.
Interpretation
Compared with adding 6 months of ADT, adding 24 months of ADT improved metastasis-free survival in people receiving postoperative radiotherapy. For individuals who can accept the additional duration of adverse effects, long-course ADT should be offered with postoperative radiotherapy.

Adding 6 months of androgen deprivation therapy to postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer: a comparison of short-course versus no androgen deprivation therapy in the RADICALS-HD randomised controlled trial
Background
Previous evidence indicates that adjuvant, short-course androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) improves metastasis-free survival when given with primary radiotherapy for intermediate-risk and high-risk localised prostate cancer. However, the value of ADT with postoperative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy is unclear.
Methods
RADICALS-HD was an international randomised controlled trial to test the efficacy of ADT used in combination with postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Key eligibility criteria were indication for radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, prostate-specific antigen less than 5 ng/mL, absence of metastatic disease, and written consent. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to radiotherapy alone (no ADT) or radiotherapy with 6 months of ADT (short-course ADT), using monthly subcutaneous gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue injections, daily oral bicalutamide monotherapy 150 mg, or monthly subcutaneous degarelix. Randomisation was done centrally through minimisation with a random element, stratified by Gleason score, positive margins, radiotherapy timing, planned radiotherapy schedule, and planned type of ADT, in a computerised system. The allocated treatment was not masked. The primary outcome measure was metastasis-free survival, defined as distant metastasis arising from prostate cancer or death from any cause. Standard survival analysis methods were used, accounting for randomisation stratification factors. The trial had 80% power with two-sided α of 5% to detect an absolute increase in 10-year metastasis-free survival from 80% to 86% (hazard ratio [HR] 0·67). Analyses followed the intention-to-treat principle. The trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN40814031, and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00541047.
Findings
Between Nov 22, 2007, and June 29, 2015, 1480 patients (median age 66 years [IQR 61–69]) were randomly assigned to receive no ADT (n=737) or short-course ADT (n=743) in addition to postoperative radiotherapy at 121 centres in Canada, Denmark, Ireland, and the UK. With a median follow-up of 9·0 years (IQR 7·1–10·1), metastasis-free survival events were reported for 268 participants (142 in the no ADT group and 126 in the short-course ADT group; HR 0·886 [95% CI 0·688–1·140], p=0·35). 10-year metastasis-free survival was 79·2% (95% CI 75·4–82·5) in the no ADT group and 80·4% (76·6–83·6) in the short-course ADT group. Toxicity of grade 3 or higher was reported for 121 (17%) of 737 participants in the no ADT group and 100 (14%) of 743 in the short-course ADT group (p=0·15), with no treatment-related deaths.
Interpretation
Metastatic disease is uncommon following postoperative bed radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy. Adding 6 months of ADT to this radiotherapy did not improve metastasis-free survival compared with no ADT. These findings do not support the use of short-course ADT with postoperative radiotherapy in this patient population
