Global Analysis of Neutrino Data
In this talk I review the present status of neutrino masses and mixing and
some of their implications for particle physics phenomenology. I first discuss
the minimum extension of the Standard Model of particle physics required to
accommodate neutrino masses and introduce the new parameters present in the
model and in particular the possibility of leptonic mixing. I then describe the
phenomenology of neutrino masses and mixing leading to flavour oscillations and
present the existing evidence from solar, reactor, atmospheric and
long-baseline neutrinos as well as the results from laboratory searches at
short distances. I derive the allowed ranges for the mass and mixing parameters
when the bulk of data is consistently analyzed in the framework of mixing
between the three active neutrinos and obtain as a result the most up-to-date
determination of the leptonic mixing matrix. Then I briefly summarize the
status of some proposed phenomenological explanations to accommodate the LSND
results: the role of sterile neutrinos and the violation of CPT. Finally I
comment how within the present experimental precision it is possible to use the
observation of oscillation patterns to impose severe constraints on the
possible violation of fundamental symmetries in particle physics such as
Lorentz invariance or the weak equivalence principle.Comment: Talk given at the Nobel Symposium on Neutrino Physics, Haga Slott,

Three-Neutrino Mixing after the First Results from K2K and KamLAND
We analyze the impact of the data on long baseline \nu_\mu disappearance from
the K2K experiment and reactor \bar\nu_e disappearance from the KamLAND
experiment on the determination of the leptonic three-generation mixing
parameters. Performing an up-to-date global analysis of solar, atmospheric,
reactor and long baseline neutrino data in the context of three-neutrino
oscillations, we determine the presently allowed ranges of masses and mixing
and we consistently derive the allowed magnitude of the elements of the
leptonic mixing matrix. We also quantify the maximum allowed contribution of
\Delta m^2_{21} oscillations to CP-odd and CP-even observables at future long
baseline experiments.Comment: Some typos correcte
Neutrino Large Mixing in Universal Yukawa Coupling Model with Small Violation
We have analyzed the possibility that the universal Yukawa coupling
(democratic mass matrix) with small violations of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos
can induce the large mixing of neutrinos through the seesaw mechanism. The
possibility can be achieved by the condition that the violation parameters of
Majorana neutrinos are sufficiently smaller than the violation parameters of
Dirac neutrinos. Allowed regions of the violation parameters producing the
observed neutrino mass hierarchy and large neutrino mixing are not so
restricted at present in contrast to the violation parameters for quark sector.Comment: 14 pages, 4figure
Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations and New Physics
We study the robustness of the determination of the neutrino masses and
mixing from the analysis of atmospheric and K2K data under the presence of
different forms of phenomenologically allowed new physics in the nu_mu--nu_tau
sector. We focus on vector and tensor-like new physics interactions which allow
us to treat, in a model independent way, effects due to the violation of the
equivalence principle, violations of the Lorentz invariance both CPT conserving
and CPT violating, non-universal couplings to a torsion field and non-standard
neutrino interactions with matter. We perform a global analysis of the full
atmospheric data from SKI together with long baseline K2K data in the presence
of nu_mu -> nu_tau transitions driven by neutrino masses and mixing together
with sub-dominant effects due to these forms of new physics. We show that
within the present degree of experimental precision, the extracted values of
masses and mixing are robust under those effects and we derive the upper bounds
on the possible strength of these new interactions in the nu_mu--nu_tau sector.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX file using RevTEX4, 5 figures and 4 tables include
Resolving parameter degeneracies in long-baseline experiments by atmospheric neutrino data
In this work we show that the physics reach of a long-baseline (LBL) neutrino
oscillation experiment based on a superbeam and a megaton water Cherenkov
detector can be significantly increased if the LBL data are combined with data
from atmospheric neutrinos (ATM) provided by the same detector. ATM data are
sensitive to the octant of and to the type of the neutrino mass
hierarchy, mainly through three-flavor effects in e-like events. This allows to
resolve the so-called - and sign()-parameter
degeneracies in LBL data. As a consequence it becomes possible to distinguish
the normal from the inverted neutrino mass ordering at CL from a
combined LBL+ATM analysis if . The potential
to identify the true values of and the CP-phase
is significantly increased through the lifting of the
degeneracies. These claims are supported by a detailed simulation of the T2K
(phase II) LBL experiment combined with a full three-flavor analysis of ATM
data in the HyperKamiokande detector.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figure

Probing neutrino non-standard interactions with atmospheric neutrino data
We have reconsidered the atmospheric neutrino anomaly in light of the laetst
data from Super-Kamiokande contained events and from Super-Kamiokande and MACRO
up-going muons. We have reanalysed the proposed solution to the atmospheric
neutrino anomaly in terms of non-standard neutrino-matter interactions (NSI) as
well as the standard nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations (OSC). Our statistical
analysis shows that a pure NSI mechanism is now ruled out at 99%, while the
standard nu_mu -> nu_tau OSC mechanism provides a quite remarkably good
description of the anomaly. We therefore study an extended mechanism of
neutrino propagation which combines both oscillation and non-standard
neutrino-matter interactions, in order to derive limits on flavour-changing
(FC) and non-universal (NU) neutrino interactions. We obtain that the
off-diagonal flavour-changing neutrino parameter epsilon and the diagonal
non-universality neutrino parameter epsilon' are confined to -0.03 < epsilon <
0.02 and |epsilon'| < 0.05 at 99.73% CL. These limits are model independent and
they are obtained from pure neutrino-physics processes. The stability of the
neutrino oscillation solution to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly against the
presence of non-standard neutrino interactions establishes the robustness of
the near-maximal atmospheric mixing and massive-neutrino hypothesis. The best
agreement with the data is obtained for Delta_m^2 = 2.3*10^{-3} eV^2,
sin^2(2*theta) = 1, epsilon = 6.7*10^{-3} and epsilon' = 1.1*10^{-3}, although
the chi^2 function is quite flat in the epsilon and epsilon' directions for
epsilon, epsilon' -> 0.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX file using REVTeX4, 1 table and 12 figures included.

In vitro propagation of cedar (Cedrela odorata L.) from juvenile shoots
Garriga, M (Garriga, Miguel); Caligari, PDS (Caligari, Peter D. S.). Univ Talca, Inst Biol Vegetal & Biotecnol, Talca, ChileCedrela odorata L. is one of the most important timber species currently traded in the Caribbean and Central America; however, it has been intensively exploited. In vitro techniques and clonal propagation can help to develop new plantations and assist in establishing improvement programs for this species. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol to establish in vitro conditions and to micropropagate this species from nodal explants from juvenile cuttings taken from field trees. Disinfection of node explants with 5% propiconazole CE 25 during 3 min resulted in 100% explant disinfection and 60% morphogenic response on those established explants. Shoot development was optimized by cultivating in vitro node explants in Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with 2 mg L(-1) 6-bencilaminopurine and 3 mg L(-1) naphthaleneacetic acid. This medium resulted in 100% shoot development from the in vitro node explants with a 3.93 cm mean height. Rooting was also stimulated 6 wk after individualization of the regenerated plants on the same micropropagation medium with a mean of 3.9 roots per plant. In vitro plants did not show morphologic differences when compared to ex vitro seeds
Determination of the atmospheric neutrino fluxes from experimental data
The precise knowledge of the atmospheric neutrino fluxes is a key ingredient
in the interpretation of the results from any atmospheric neutrino experiment.
In the standard atmospheric neutrino data analysis, these fluxes are
theoretical inputs obtained from sophisticated numerical calculations. In this
contribution we present an alternative approach to the determination of the
atmospheric neutrino fluxes based on the direct extraction from the
experimental data on neutrino event rates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs, to appear in the proceedings of the Multi-Messenger

Constraining neutrino oscillation parameters with current solar and atmospheric data
We analyze the impact of recent solar, atmospheric and reactor data in the
determination of the neutrino oscillation parameters, taking into account that
both the solar nu_e and the atmospheric nu_mu may convert to a mixture of
active and sterile neutrinos. We use the most recent global solar neutrino
data, including the 1496-day Super-K neutrino data sample, and we investigate
in detail the impact of the SNO neutral current, spectral and day/night data by
performing also an analysis using only the charged current rate from SNO. The
implications of the first 145.1 days of KamLAND data on the determination of
the solar neutrino parameters are also discussed in detail. We confirm the
clear preference of solar+reactor data for the pure active LMA-MSW solution of
the solar neutrino problem, and obtain that the LOW, VAC, SMA and Just-So^2
solutions are disfavored with a Delta_chi^2 = 22, 22, 36, 44, respectively.
Furthermore, we find that the global solar data constrains the admixture of a
sterile neutrino to be less than 43% at 99% CL. By performing an improved fit
of the atmospheric data, we also update the corresponding regions of
oscillation parameters. We find that the recent atmospheric Super-K (1489-day)
and MACRO data have a strong impact on constraining a sterile component in
atmospheric oscillations: if the nu_mu is restricted to the atmospheric mass
states only a sterile admixture of 16% is allowed at 99% CL, while a bound of
35% is obtained in the unconstrained case. Pure sterile oscillations are
disfavored with a Delta_chi^2 = 34.6 compared to the pure active case.Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX file using RevTEX4, 12 figures and 3 tables included.
