Unnoticed magnetic field oscillations in the very quiet Sun revealed by Sunrise/IMaX
We present observational evidence for oscillations of magnetic flux density
in the quiet areas of the Sun. The majority of magnetic fields on the solar
surface have strengths of the order of or lower than the equipartition field
(300-500 G). This results in a myriad of magnetic fields whose evolution is
largely determined by the turbulent plasma motions. When granules evolve they
squash the magnetic field lines together or pull them apart. Here we report on
the periodic deformation of the shapes of features in circular polarization
observed at high resolution with Sunrise. In particular, we note that the area
of patches with constant magnetic flux oscillates with time, which implies that
the apparent magnetic field intensity oscillates in antiphase. The periods
associated to this oscillatory pattern is compatible with the granular
life-time and change abruptly, which suggests that these oscillations might not
correspond to characteristic oscillatory modes of magnetic structures, but to
the forcing by granular motions. In one particular case, we find three patches
around the same granule oscillating in phase, which means that the spatial
coherence of these oscillations can reach 1600 km. Interestingly, the same kind
of oscillatory phenomenon is found also in the upper photosphere.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ letter
On the Analysis of the Contact Conditions in Temporomandibular Joint Prostheses
Temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a complex surgical procedure in which the artificial joints available must assure the anatomical reconstruction and guarantee a good range of the natural temporomandibular joint (TMJ) movements. With this aim, different types of TMJ prostheses, including the stock prosthetic system and custom-made prostheses, are being currently implanted. Although temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJRs) are expected to accomplish their function during a number of years, they might actually fail and need to be replaced. This paper analyzes different design factors affecting the contact stress distributions within the TMJ prosthesis interface, which are consequently involved in their deterioration and final failure of the prosthetic device. With this purpose, a numerical model based on finite elements has been carried out in order to evaluate the stress states attained in different prosthesis configurations corresponding to general types of TMJ prostheses. On the other hand, the actual degradation of resected implants has been evaluated via optical microscopy. The linkage between the numerical simulations performed and experimental evidence allowed the authors to establish the different wear and damage mechanisms involved in the failure of stock TMJ prostheses. Indeed, the results obtained show that the contact stresses at the interface between the mandible and the glenoid fossa components play a key role in the failure process of the TMJR devices
Spatial and temporal distributions of transient horizontal magnetic fields with deep exposure
We obtained a long exposure vector magnetogram of the quiet Sun photosphere
at the disk center with wide FOV of . The observation was
performed at Fe I 525.0 nm with the shutter-less mode of the Narrow Band Filter
Imager of the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board Hinode satellite. We
summed the linear polarization () maps taken with time cadence of 60
seconds for 2 hours to obtain a map with as long an exposure as possible. The
polarization sensitivity would be more than 4.6 (21.2 in exposure time) times
the standard observation with the SOT spectro-polarimeter. The map shows a
cellular structure with a typical scale of . We find that the
enhanced signals essentially consist of the isolated sporadic transient
horizontal magnetic fields (THMFs) with life time of 1-10 min, and are not
contributed by long-duration weak horizontal magnetic fields. The cellular
structure coincides in position with the negative divergence of the horizontal
flow field, i.e., mesogranular boundaries with downflows. Azimuth distribution
appears to be random for the scale size of the mesogranules. Some pixels have
two separate appearances of THMFs, and the measured time intervals are
consistent with the random appearance. THMFs tend to appear at the mesogranular
boundaries, but appear randomly in time. We discuss the origin of THMFs based
on these observations.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letter

Recycling of residues as precursors of carbons for supercapacitors
En: 1st Spanish National Conference on Advances in Materials Recycling and Eco – Energy Madrid, 12-13 November 2009.-- Editors: F. A. López, F. Puertas, F. J. Alguacil and A. Guerrero.-- 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. It is shown that industrial wastes such as apple pulp
(generated in the cider production), cherry stones
(from the industrial manufacture of Kirsh and jam)
and PET (plastic vessels) can be recycled as
activated carbons for electrode material in
supercapacitors.
These precursors allow obtaining carbons with large
specific surface areas (up to 1200 m2g-1) and
average pore sizes around 0.9-1.3 nm, which makes
them accessible to electrolyte ions. These features
lead to electrical capacitances at low current density
as high as 230 F g-1 in 2M H2SO4 aqueous electrolyte
and 120 F g-1 in the aprotic medium 1M (C2H5)4NBF4
/ acetonitrile. Furthermore, high performance is also
achieved at high current densities, which means that
the activated carbons derived from residues compete
well with commercial carbons used at present in
supercapacitors.Peer reviewe
Agroecological heuristics: Xi (Ξ) biomathematical models of alpha diversity and Lambda functional entropy index (λ) applied for macrofauna in diversified agroecosystems of Nicaragua
Agriculture causes chaos on the macrofauna associated with agroecosystems. The functions developed by macrofauna species in agroecological environments are harmful, beneficial and fundamental for food production. In order to design Xi (Ξ) biomathematical models of alpha diversity and to create a functional entropy index (λ), the taxonomic identification of macrofauna was carried out in 10 agroecosystems with conventional and agroecological production approach in five locations of Nicaragua: Boaco, Carazo, Chinandega, Estelí and Matagalpa. The capture of macrofauna was carried out in five surface sampling points of 3.1416 m2 each and subsequent subtraction of five soil monoliths per subsystem. Each monolith had dimensions of 0.25 m (length) 0.25 m (width) 0.30 m (depth) for atotal of 98 monoliths. The agroecosystems with a conventional approach presented 73 families and with an agroecological approach 124 families were observed. The dominant interaction of macrofauna families were between Scarabaeidae, Formicidae, Chrysomelidae, Elateridae and Noctuidae; especially the first two, influenced the final result of the model, generating a tendency to negativity due to its herd behaviour. The families Lumbricidae, Rhinotermitidaeand Acanthodrilidae, the three gregarious, pushed the model towards positivity together with Polydesmidae and Porcellionidae. The biomathematical model Xi () generated polynomial equations with an agroecological approach to simulate abundance, richness, dominance, uniformity, stability and functionality of the macrofauna species. The agroecosystems with an agroecological approach presented a range of between 41.36 to 127,095.41 much higher than the conventional approach with a range of -81.62 to 8,588.73 and a tendency to negativity
Nursing care in neonatal abstinence syndrome
The neonatal abstinence syndrome is due to drug use during pregnancy and causes a multisystemic symptomatology in the newborn. This work shows some diagnosis and nursing cares in this type of syndrome, as part of the medical team, in order to avoid this syndrome, to try to have a early identification and control of the symptomatology associated. Although nursing role is principally carried out in hospital environment, the sick must grow in other spheres.
A bibliographic review was made in different databases such as Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Académico. The information recollected shows that there are not many results for a standardized method of evaluation, drug therapy or discharge criteria. In addition, a lack of studies also shows the effectiveness of some of non-pharmacologic treatment in this specific population. Therefore, a new line of investigation is opened in order to provide quality care in accordance with the neonatal abstinence syndrome needs.
The main objective of this Ph.D. Thesis is the study and
improvement of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and
oxidation resistance at high temperature of powder metallurgy ferritic
stainless steels.
Sintered ferritic stainless steels, due to their good combination
of mechanical properties and oxidation behaviour and the material
savings of P/M processes, are widely used in industrial applications,
mainly in the automobile industry. Ferritic stainless steels present
better performance at high temperature than austenitic stainless steels,
and their cost is reduced as they have lower level of alloying. However,
these properties are worst than in wrought stainless steels. Therefore, it
has been studied the possibility of improving the mechanical properties
and the oxidation resistance of AISI 409LNb, 434L and 430L stainless
steel using different sintering conditions.
Moreover, the improvement of mechanical properties and the
oxidation resistance has been done through the manufacturing of
materials with different additions to the 434L base material; this
objective has been reached with prealloyed powders with a higher Si
content and with a 434L based composite material reinforced with
yttria.
After manufacturing, the physical, mechanical and corrosion
properties at room temperature of the ferritic stainless steels have been
characterized. Then, they have been tested at high temperature and
they have been characterized by means of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD),
Scaning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electrochemical Impedance
Spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curves and thermogravimetry
