    The Polychronakos-Frahm spin chain of BC_N type and Berry-Tabor's conjecture

    We compute the partition function of the su(m) Polychronakos-Frahm spin chain of BC_N type by means of the freezing trick. We use this partition function to study several statistical properties of the spectrum, which turn out to be analogous to those of other spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type. In particular, we find that when the number of particles is sufficiently large the level density follows a Gaussian distribution with great accuracy. We also show that the distribution of (normalized) spacings between consecutive levels is of neither Poisson nor Wigner type, but is qualitatively similar to that of the original Haldane-Shastry spin chain. This suggests that spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type are exceptional integrable models, since they do not satisfy a well-known conjecture of Berry and Tabor according to which the spacings distribution of a generic integrable system should be Poissonian. We derive a simple analytic expression for the cumulative spacings distribution of the BC_N-type Polychronakos-Frahm chain using only a few essential properties of its spectrum, like the Gaussian character of the level density and the fact the energy levels are equally spaced. This expression is in excellent agreement with the numerical data and, moreover, there is strong evidence that it can also be applied to the Haldane-Shastry and the Polychronakos-Frahm spin chains.Comment: revTeX, 11 pages, 4 figure

    COPD Clinical Control: predictors and long-term follow-up of the CHAIN cohort

    CHAIN Study Investigators.[Background] Control in COPD is a dynamic concept that can reflect changes in patients’ clinical status that may have prognostic implications, but there is no information about changes in control status and its long-term consequences.[Methods] We classified 798 patients with COPD from the CHAIN cohort as controlled/uncontrolled at baseline and over 5 years. We describe the changes in control status in patients over long-term follow-up and analyze the factors that were associated with longitudinal control patterns and related survival using the Cox hazard analysis.[Results] 134 patients (16.8%) were considered persistently controlled, 248 (31.1%) persistently uncontrolled and 416 (52.1%) changed control status during follow-up. The variables significantly associated with persistent control were not requiring triple therapy at baseline and having a better quality of life. Annual changes in outcomes (health status, psychological status, airflow limitation) did not differ in patients, regardless of clinical control status. All-cause mortality was lower in persistently controlled patients (5.5% versus 19.1%, p = 0.001). The hazard ratio for all-cause mortality was 2.274 (95% CI 1.394–3.708; p = 0.001). Regarding pharmacological treatment, triple inhaled therapy was the most common option in persistently uncontrolled patients (72.2%). Patients with persistent disease control more frequently used bronchodilators for monotherapy (53%) at recruitment, although by the end of the follow-up period, 20% had scaled up their treatment, with triple therapy being the most frequent therapeutic pattern.[Conclusions] The evaluation of COPD control status provides relevant prognostic information on survival. There is important variability in clinical control status and only a small proportion of the patients had persistently good control. Changes in the treatment pattern may be relevant in the longitudinal pattern of COPD clinical control. The dysfunction of these channels results in several disorders named channelopathies, which represent a challenge for study and treatment.[1] We are focused on voltage-gated potassium channels, specifically on KV4.3. Kv4.3 is expressed in smooth muscle, heart and brain. Within the heart, Kv4.3 channels generate the transient outward potassium current (ITO). However, ITO characteristics are only observed when Kv4.3 assemble with accessory subunits as KChIP2 and DPP6. KV4.3 channelosome play a key role in atrial fibrillation (AF),the most common cardiac arrhythmia, with an estimated prevalence in the general population of 1.5–2%. However, current antiarrhythmic drugs for AF prevention have limited efficacy and considerable potential for adverse effects.[2] KChIP2 (Potassium Channel Interacting Protein 2) belongs to the calcium binding protein superfamily. It is the KChIP member predominantly expressed in heart and a key regulator of cardiac action potential duration. The identification of novel KChIP2 ligands could be useful to understand the role of KV4.3 channelosome in AF and it could help to discover new treatments for AF. [3] In this regard, structure-based virtual screening could be an important tool to accelerate the identification of novel KChIP2 ligands.     Revealing the last 13,500 years of environmental history from the multiproxy record of a mountain lake (Lago Enol, northern Iberian Peninsula)

A multiproxy analysis provided comprehensive information about regional humidity and temperature changes. The analysis included sedimentological descriptions, physical properties, organic carbon and carbonate content, mineralogy and geochemical composition together with biological proxies including diatom and ostracod assemblages. A detailed pollen study enabled reconstruction of variations in vegetation cover, which were interpreted in the context of climate changes and human impact. Four distinct stages were recognized for the last 13,500 years: (1) a cold and dry episode that includes the Younger Dryas event (13,500–11,600 cal. year BP); (2) a humid and warmer period characterizing the onset of the Holocene (11,600–8,700 cal. year BP); (3) a tendency toward a drier climate during the middle Holocene (8,700–4,650 cal. year BP); and (4) a return to humid conditions following landscape modification by human activity (pastoral activities, deforestation) in the late Holocene (4,650–2,200 cal. year BP).     Iron deficiency among endurance athletes is of major concern for coaches, physicians, and nutritionists. Recently, it has been observed that hepcidin, the master regulator of iron metabolism, was upregulated after exercise and was found to be related to interleukin-6 (IL-6) elevation. In this study performed on noniron deficient and well-trained runners, we observed that hepcidin concentrations remain elevated in response to inflammatory and iron signals despite a 28-days supplementation period with vitamins C (500 mg/day) and E (400 IU/day)

    Transcriptome profiling of grapevine seedless segregants during berry development reveals candidate genes associated with berry weight

    Indexación: Web of Science; PubMedBackground Berry size is considered as one of the main selection criteria in table grape breeding programs. However, this is a quantitative and polygenic trait, and its genetic determination is still poorly understood. Considering its economic importance, it is relevant to determine its genetic architecture and elucidate the mechanisms involved in its expression. To approach this issue, an RNA-Seq experiment based on Illumina platform was performed (14 libraries), including seedless segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight at fruit setting (FST) and 6–8 mm berries (B68) phenological stages. Results A group of 526 differentially expressed (DE) genes were identified, by comparing seedless segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight: 101 genes from the FST stage and 463 from the B68 stage. Also, we integrated differential expression, principal components analysis (PCA), correlations and network co-expression analyses to characterize the transcriptome profiling observed in segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight. After this, 68 DE genes were selected as candidate genes, and seven candidate genes were validated by real time-PCR, confirming their expression profiles. Conclusions We have carried out the first transcriptome analysis focused on table grape seedless segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight. Our findings contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms involved in berry weight determination. Also, this comparative transcriptome profiling revealed candidate genes for berry weight which could be evaluated as selection tools in table grape breeding programs.http://bmcplantbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12870-016-0789-
